No, Xbox just spent too much and they had incompetent decision makers. Do not confuse Xbox's massive spending as what was necessary, if anything the spending is what killed them.
Activision had now assumed direct control and made Xbox into its image. A third Party Developer, a role Activision invented 45 years ago when they convinced Atari to profit-share.
Sony has PlayStation support itself and fund the rest of the company. But Sony is no god. There will be other challengers and they will be better than Xbox. Having infinite money ended up not being able to compensate for a lack of talent, who knew?

PS5 won the war, MS tried with all its almost infinite money to take it down and remove it from the market and in the end it has unfortunately ended up needing and depending on its games being sold on Playstation to save the Xbox business.
PCMR is getting Sony exclusives now, so who's really winning? Yeah, Xbox as a brand is done, but Sony waved the white flag to PCMR and let them have their exclusives, which in some time, will make people realize that they don't really need a PlayStation system to play those games...

Nintendo bailed out straight after the GC, targeting a different demographic altogether and not entering the spec race. With the Wii U they sort of followed, which is a thing Nintendo shouldn't do. Wii U followed tablets in a half assed way and they got quite a bit of PS360 games. But you can say it was sort of a precursor to the Switch, the Wii U was one step away from being a handheld/home console hybrid. The Switch was, they found a way to merge these 2 markets.
MS lost because they didn't branch out but rather copied Sony. They did popularize online gaming on consoles and brought more PC IP over, but Sony was simply the de facto brand when it came to consoles. With exclusivity becoming more rare over time as costs rise, the de facto brand wins. Also, Xbox failed to build an empire. They mainly capitalized on timed deals like the GTA DLC, CoD promotion and celebrated games like DMC and FF as wins. Meanwhile they didn't build their own IP like Sony did. MS took Halo from Bungie and gave it to an incompetent studio, they took GoW from Epic and gave it to studios that do a worse job too. And Turn 10 is fucking up Forza Motorsport themselves for whatever reasons.
In the end, with third party exclusivity fading into obcurity, MS basically doesn't have enough firepower to differentiate itself from Sony. The Series X is a lot like the PS5, just with worse games overall.

Speaking as a PC player, it looks like Sony is gonna be the console Nvidia, except they are only as competent as AMDs GPU division.
IMHO consoles have been worthless since the end of the ps3/360 gen, because you're essentially just locking yourself into a walled garden ecosystem. Switch doesn't count because they actually have more notable exclusives than I can count on one hand after an unfortunate woodchipper incident. Just IMHO, I know lots of y'all love your consoles.
Microsoft had an okay idea, because they kind of saw the writing on the wall. They wanted a cross platform ecosystem, but sadly everything they touch kind of turns to shit. Unfortunately for them, the subscription model doesn't seem to be a long term viable solution.
Nintendo won by not competing in the self immolation contest that Sony and Microsoft were vying for the leadership of.
And valve is over in the corner counting money and not making half life 3

The ABK acquisition was the final nail in the coffin and it completely destroyed Xbox. I knew it was a terrible idea from the beginning and they are unfortunately paying the price for it. Multiplatform, less exclusives, even less console sales, layoffs, even more tarnished of a tarnished image, etc.

Nintendo is profitable, SIE prints money out of thin air.
If a business has low margins (let's say 5% NOPAT), but generates a ridiculously high amount of revenue per yen of invested capital (let's just say ¥5:1 ), then you're actually looking at a 25% ROIC
Nintendo is a pure play, a company that focus solely on a single product, and much bigger by assets than SIE, Sony Music or Pictures.
And yet, SIE revenue is 3x Nintendo's, which means that the industry depends on PlayStation.
SIE dominance has several advantages:
- Their profits are more predictable (Reuters: Nintendo heads for third consecutive annual loss)
-They can reduce margins, overcome a pandemic, and force Microsoft to bend the knee after investing $80B in order to spend SIE out of business
-Their profits can bounce back almost overnight
- SIE doesn't need to build a war chest:
a) Sony Group can reinvest PlayStation profits in Music, Pictures ...
b) or announce an expansion of its share repurchase program and increase share price

I've been calling this out too. I'm anti-console war (I didn't even know this was a thing growing up in the 90s) and as a PC gamer primarily as a kid, it's disgusting how these new fans are. PCMR is the worst thing to happen on PC, more than intrusive DRM.
Because of trophies? There's more to XBL than just trophies. PSN still lacks most of the social features XBL has had for more than a decade. No clubs, no looking for group feature, no achievement leaderboards, etc. Not to mention having to pay for PSN for cloud saves.

XBL is for multiplayer games, in case you weren't aware, and things like clubs and LFG are VERY useful to find players for MP.

PC doesn`t have a platform holder who would be interested in producing exclusives...the whole idea of "exclusives" makes absolutely no sense as you`re not dealing with a walled garden. The only exclusives that make sense on PC are those who don`t work well with controllers, MOBAs like League of Legends for example.
