Kotaku: The Console Wars Are Over And Nobody Really Won

Who really won?

Kotaku isn't dead and buried? I guess we all lost. Rotten site and people.

Maybe the "nobody cares" part is partly because because not 1 console company really dominated with constant quality, but rather the others just kept sucking and making themselves look super weak and irrelevant. Can't really be excited to watch a war that has little offense, but only suicide.

I've been calling this out too. I'm anti-console war (I didn't even know this was a thing growing up in the 90s) and as a PC gamer primarily as a kid, it's disgusting how these new fans are. PCMR is the worst thing to happen on PC, more than intrusive DRM.

PCMR look a lot like the most lunatic Xbox fanboys.

Xbox fanboy kept making fake news, taking Print in 240p to say that Sony games would be "downgraded" while Phill launched Halo with Craig and PS2 graphics and everyone knows what happened to the Xbox with this complacency from the brand's fans .

Now we have the same with PCMR, Nvidia launching expensive cards, with little or no upgrades compared to the previous generation... It needs a heatsink on the 5090's power connector that reaches 80 degrees... But the "fans of PC" are desperate on the internet talking about the PSSR, that the console is rubbish and that Sony games "aren't all that" and making a circus over a PSN Login on helldivers2.

Soon, an entry-level video card will cost 999, consume 600W and melt not only the connector but also the power cable itself and set the user's house on fire, but the PCMR guys will be more concerned about lying that the PS5 has "ray tracing of software" just like Alex Bugaga did
When I played on the PC, no one on the PC was engaged in defaming consoles... We on the PC were playing DOOM3, Far Cry and Half Life

PC at that time was not just a secondary platform for playing Console games. When Nvidia launched drivers with cheats it was a scandal, today the connector catches fire and PC fanboys are more concerned with making fake news about the PS5 with "fake clock that will lose performance as the generation advances" like Alex Bugaga from digital foundry because in Death Strading you needed an RTX3070 to tie with the PS5 because DS "doesn't use a CPU and that's why the GPU runs at maximum clock speed"

The ABK acquisition was the final nail in the coffin and it completely destroyed Xbox. I knew it was a terrible idea from the beginning and they are unfortunately paying the price for it. Multiplatform, less exclusives, even less console sales, layoffs, even more tarnished of a tarnished image, etc.

Its too big of a brand to ignore Playstation. They must've known this when they went through. Unless they somehow expected that Series sales would skyrocket after the deal was finalized. But all these ABK IP, they don't work as exclusives. They have a long ass multiplatform legacy, and many players on the Sony ecosystem. You'll also leave too much money on the table with it. I didn't understand the negotiations either, because in my mind MS needed Playstation more than the other way around. They should absolutely want to release Call of Duty on Playstation consoles, I read 80% of BO6 sales was on there.

There was never a war, any sane person will just get the console that have games he like, to me Nintendo was always an almost and i never did get one, so what i'm in war with them? very childish.. Xbox just stopped caring about selling hardware i guess, or less caring and that's it.

Nintendo is, smartly, doing their own thing. The times they competed directly with PlayStation were rough - N64 vs PS1, GC vs PS2, Wii U.

Doing their own market has been higely successful, Wii and Switch, as well as handhelds.

The only real gaming wars of significance were Nintendo vs Sega and PlayStation vs Xbox. Obviously, Nintendo and PlayStation obliterated their respective competitor.

Will there be a third console gaming war? Or will it just be PlayStation for the "hardcore" console games, Nintendo for its Nintendo/handheld audience and Valve for the PC market?

Such as?

The argument is always about consoles losing exclusives without realising PC hasn’t had big AAA exclusives since the early 00s

The pc has always been open. It pretty much gets everything. Console developers outside of nintendo need their games to go on everything. All Sony has is timed exclusives now. It's literally money hats. No pc publisher is gonna pay to just have games on pc. It's only Sony and ms that moneyhat games to try and incentivise console sales. Pc wins people over with flexible hardware and a lack of walled gardens.

My opinion of course.

Classic signs of inferiority complex. I loved PC gaming before the crypto bros fucked up the market and hardware/accessory manufacturers decided to bleed dry anyone with more money than intelligence. Sure there was always LED gamer bullshit, but it’s gotten so much worse.

The core PC fans are still there as always, though probably annoyed by the situation too. The people making all this noise are babby YouTubers who blindly follow recommendations at any cost and who couldn’t put together a Lego setup prior to PCPP and the return of prebuilts to retail space.

The thing really telling is how adamant they come on about the spec war - in an age where gains are marginal and even when the PC version is superior visually, it has bugs and issues that simply don’t get fixed or rely on tweaks and third party mods or patches. The game that woke me up to this was NieR Automata. A game that is simply far better experienced on PS4. Meanwhile they will deal with stutter on games running their $1500 GPUs - how they put up with this while pretending to notice a difference in 120+ fps, I have no clue. Now they’ve moved onto AI frame gen and are screaming about it from the top of their lungs like FLOPS console soldier bois from the 7th gen battlefields.

Because of trophies? There's more to XBL than just trophies. PSN still lacks most of the social features XBL has had for more than a decade. No clubs, no looking for group feature, no achievement leaderboards, etc. Not to mention having to pay for PSN for cloud saves.
tbf, "social features" Playstation owners dgaf about, Sony tried communities on PS4 and that didn't stick because it ended up like and old forum where people made one reply and never bothered to check it again, then Sony tried again with some accolades thing on PS5 and it went nowhere again so they deleted it from memory :messenger_beaming:

The "what's new" page where you can check all the activities from Friends and others, users barely care to interact with, tho that's good enough already, it has enough information about your friends and what they do, their recent trophies, first time played games and what they played/playing atm

Surely the opposite is now the case

PC benefited from Xbox games launching on PC day one.

Now that PS5 and Switch 2 will be getting those games that advantage has been lost.

If anything, this is as much a blow to PC as Xbox.
Lol no.
Yes PC get xbox games day one also sony games and nin switch games all in one platform + steam/pc exclusives

So yes PC is the winner this gen, how is this a blow to PC?

that's why I say PC has won. PC is the domain domain of console AND PC games.

Where are the big PC exclusives like you had in the 90s and early 00s?

PC has many more games on Steam that are still exclusive, also Half-Life Alyx, Crysis Warhead, Star Citizen, and the upcoming Squadron 42.
Even Baldur's Gate 3 was first on PC, the same with many Microsoft games that were day one on PC, with no PS5 versions yet, there are games like Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, Ryse, etc.

Basically, if you want 95% of AAA games and 65% of indies running on low/medium settings, get yourself a PS5 (Pro).

If you want to play 95% of AAA games and 99% of indies on High/Ultra settings, get yourself a PC.

If you like either of the Mario, Zelda or Metroid IPs, get yourself a Switch (2).

No, Xbox console is in decline. PlayStation and Nintendo are not. PS5 is only behind PS4 by 2 million units worldwide and that is due largely to the fact that prices have risen, not decreased, which was not the case in prior generations. Despite that, PS5 is ahead of PS4 in the US. Meanwhile Nintendo is about to break the record for most consoles ever sold. So it is pretty dang easy to see that there is only one console truly in decline, but "misery loves company".

But ps5 is behind ps4 worldwide. So the install base is currently a couple of million down. PC gaming is seeing worldwide growth of like +20% yoy isn't it?

Sony aren't grabbing all the xbox users or something else is happening as well.

Maybe Sony can pull it all back by the end of the gen and see positive growth.

The only growth that really matters is revenue and in that regard PS5 is ahead of PS4. If Sony wanted to sell more units then they could drop the price and do just that. But as they hold a dominant position over Xbox in market share, they don't have to and so units sold suffer in favor of revenue. I'm not arguing that PC isn't growing. The only console that is truly in decline is Xbox and that is in both units sold and revenue.

I don't know how you can say nobody won.

Sony now gets every game on their platform, so they essentially are the defacto console for ambitious games and third parties. Of course, that has already been the case for a while, but it's now an even larger factor in their favor. They own the console market.

I think Microsoft can START winning in their own way, in the sense that they can now stop fighting a war they will never win, and maybe this will help them just focus on getting good games out and trying to have the highest sales possible so they can keep these teams afloat rather than having to shut them down. It takes some pressure off them to always have to try and compete with Sony on something that's not realistic.

I'm expecting the PS6 to be a very long generation. Sony will be the only option for the traditional console and the pressure to prepare for the next generation will be nonexistent.
