Sony dominated the home console market by outlasting SEGA, pushing Nintendo into portables, and now seeing Microsoft shift toward handhelds and third-party publishing. With Xbox's next-gen leadership tied to Surface tablets, the handheld rumors seem inevitable.

Sony’s strength lies in consistency, its PlayStation branding, controller design, and developer-friendly approach kept its community strong. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s constant hardware changes hurt third-party trust, making it unreliable for franchises like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy.

I would say Microsoft's biggest issue was not investing in those first parties from the very get-go. They lost Bioware to EA by failing to secure Mass Effect’s IP and wasted money on timed exclusives instead of building a solid foundation. Many 360 exclusives eventually landed on PS3, reinforcing Sony’s lead.

And last but not least Microsoft's biggest issue during those days is that they seem to not trust those developers they keep trying to build something evergreen like you see with maybe Mario out of things that make no sense like with Halo or gears we're talking about properties where you don't need 10 of something like this it actually makes more sense to just have those 3 to 4 titles and then move on to something brand new and allah those teams to stretch their wings

I mean what the fuck happened with that black tusk FPS title ? Move the fuck on... The amount of people that like gears of war is not going to change and I'm sure those same people would like what black tusk was going to be instead they turn the fucking team into just making one property and then act surprised that they lose yet another generation

I have no doubt in my mind that destiny would have been an absolute amazing success story for Microsoft if they fucking just let the damn team make something new you're talking about a company that literally needed to leave Microsoft to create something new and now it's one of the biggest properties Bungie has ever created. I feel by the time Microsoft realized a lot of this they have already conceded to just being a third party in those big purchases of third party publishers have more to do with them seeking to just do that then actually building some stable base for the future Xbox as it seems like they're done with focusing exclusively on anyone particular ser of hardware

To any Nintendo fans this is no disrespect to what Nintendo was able to achieve with the Nintendo switch, if we had a thread talking about who won the portable wars I would tell you that Nintendo 100% won that for the same reason that Sony wins this 1...

If you push your competitor out of that market to the point where there are no longer focused on something like that to the same degree they were prior, Clearly you have been extremely successful for that simply to be an option for that company.

So the Nintendo switch HDMI cord is equivalent to something like the playstation portal , it is saying that we understand someone wishes to play like this but we concede that this is no longer the majority market that we are in...

Nintendo have been combining corporate asshattery with innovation and great iconic games since day one. Fuckers just keep creating their own market or corner the one they created. Sure there is some misfires but they adjust quick enough or try another direction to success.

Soon, an entry-level video card will cost 999, consume 600W and melt not only the connector but also the power cable itself and set the user's house on fire, but the PCMR guys will be more concerned about lying that the PS5 has "ray tracing of software" just like Alex Bugaga did

Xbox has surrendered by putting 1st party games on both competing consoles.
So they definitively lose. PS is putting games on PC (which mvst stop) and Nintendo is still around, so the warz aren't over yet. Hopefully, they never will be.

The activision/blizzard deal didn't destroy xbox. Gamepass is what destroyed xbox and it devalued the brand and the exclusives of the brand so much that it ultimately sunk them. They moved away from what made them successful in the 360 era which was exclusive japanese games and exclusive games in general, innovation in terms of a controller and a U.I, and the aggressiveness that they used to have to compete against sony. As soon as phil spencer announced to the world that gamepass was coming to xbox the brand as we know it died because it started them up this journey of having to buy publishers and studios nonstop to feed the gamepass monster.
The Activision deal didn't destroy them because Xbox was already in the shitter. Not sure who (spencer?) thought a 70 billion acquisition for a platform that was dying was a good idea. Xbox basically has start all over again like the OG xbox. But putting all their games, the ones normally exclusive to their platform, on the rival platform is the final nail in the coffin.

PC did not win the "console" wars

It was the big winner from the console wars. It now gets Xbox games and Playstation games, both consoles controllers are officially supported along with the PSVR2, plus Nintendo having to reinvent it's hardware with the Switch paved the way for the steam deck and the other PC handhelds.

Two different discussions though. When we talk about winning the console war, PC is not in the discussion because it is not a console, obviously. If you want to say that PC benefitted the most as a result of the console wars then yeah, I'd probably agree with that. But that is not what the article is talking about.

sony lost to the 360 and wii. switch is the current console king.

Last count had PS3 outselling 360, but yeah definitely lost to Wii

Obviously Sony "won". Because they've stuck around long enough for all their direct competitors to decide to go a different way.

Which isn't to say they've put their opponents out of business, because the most obvious example is Nintendo, who dipped out of the "war" post-GameCube and have since enjoyed massive success with Wii and Switch. Consoles that are clearly differentiated to the extent that they are almost categories by themselves.
At this point, Sony are competing against themselves and it doesn’t look good from my perspective. First time I have ever skipped their hardware and do not regret it, a single iota.

PCMR look a lot like the most lunatic Xbox fanboys.

Xbox fanboy kept making fake news, taking Print in 240p to say that Sony games would be "downgraded" while Phill launched Halo with Craig and PS2 graphics and everyone knows what happened to the Xbox with this complacency from the brand's fans .

Now we have the same with PCMR, Nvidia launching expensive cards, with little or no upgrades compared to the previous generation... It needs a heatsink on the 5090's power connector that reaches 80 degrees... But the "fans of PC" are desperate on the internet talking about the PSSR, that the console is rubbish and that Sony games "aren't all that" and making a circus over a PSN Login on helldivers2.

Soon, an entry-level video card will cost 999, consume 600W and melt not only the connector but also the power cable itself and set the user's house on fire, but the PCMR guys will be more concerned about lying that the PS5 has "ray tracing of software" just like Alex Bugaga did
When I played on the PC, no one on the PC was engaged in defaming consoles... We on the PC were playing DOOM3, Far Cry and Half Life

PC at that time was not just a secondary platform for playing Console games. When Nvidia launched drivers with cheats it was a scandal, today the connector catches fire and PC fanboys are more concerned with making fake news about the PS5 with "fake clock that will lose performance as the generation advances" like Alex Bugaga from digital foundry because in Death Strading you needed an RTX3070 to tie with the PS5 because DS "doesn't use a CPU and that's why the GPU runs at maximum clock speed"

I'm getting more use out of this image than I ever thought possible.

How can somebody write this horseshit drivel with a straight face?

MS's Xbox business not only retreated to almost complete irrelevance on the market, they're launching all of their major first party games including fucking Halo on PS5.

How can anyone claim Sony didn't win? They won more than anyone could have dreamed.

If you'd said last gen that MS would be launching Halo and Gears on PS5 people would have laughed you off the forum. Now it's manifest and Xbots are snuffing so much copium they've divorced themselves from reality.

Of course Sony won. Anyone saying other than this is simply wrong.

So, Alex Bugava learned from the lunatic Xbox fanboys, and did exactly what I said he should do, go worry about the platform he likes as opposed to making fake news about the platform he hates (PS5 has a fake Clock and performance will decrease as the generation progresses)
.

One of the reasons for the end of the Xbox was the complacency of the brand's fans, who defended all the shit that Phill did and attacked the playstation with fake news like "Resident evil is 1080p on PS5 and 4k on xbox SX" like Duske Golem did to "balance out Xbox Craig's negativity."

If they had taken care of their own platform instead of defaming the "imaginary enemy" maybe the Xbox wouldn't have become the new Sega

An example is you, projecting what your "friends on your side" do on the "other side", on "my enemy"

I don't know what MS hopes to accomplish in 2025 by paying game "journalists" to write propaganda literally no one reads or cares about. I guess someone has to prop up what little remains of the gaming media these days

I do love that the ABK acquisition completely blew up in their face and ultimately destroyed the xbox brand.
The entire gaming industry owes the government of the United Kingdom a debt that can never be repaid. They are the only ones who put their feet down and demanded concessions that essentially ended MS plans to monopolize gaming and crush Sony by buying every big publisher and taking all their big franchise Xbox exclusive

This was only possible because of Brexit otherwise the UK would had to go along with the EU which folded like a cheap tent. So in that sense, it is factually accurate to say that Brexit saved gaming

The bear of bad news
1 nintendos best selling ever
2 sony doing good less sells then switch bbbbuuuut first parties suck woke crud cepts for returnal annnnnd astrobot
3 ms third party sega game over thank you for switch 2 games in the futures

Surely the opposite is now the case

PC benefited from Xbox games launching on PC day one.

Now that PS5 and Switch 2 will be getting those games that advantage has been lost.

If anything, this is as much a blow to PC as Xbox.
last time i checked i can play xbox , playstation and even nintendo switch games on my pc. cant see how this is a blow to PC .

Nintendo for me. Gaming at it's core is about fun. Nintendo keeps pushing that and focuses on offline coop and joy, like no other developer/Sony or Xbox.

Sony is all about cinematic gaming experiences and while I love that, I'm sad that they seemed to have abandoned what PSX used to stand for.

Nintendo has also changed, but they're still very much intact with their core values and identity.

So who won, for me? Nintendo. Big time. And I think BotW and TotK are a testament to that. Creativity and joy above all.

The companies that revenue graph grows is the winner and they will laugh all the way to the bank while the "fans" argue amongst themselves.

Whoever wins, it is not the consumers. Microsoft's strategy change will lead to the natural implosion of the Xbox brand in the long term. Sony has been sitting back for a while now and if in doubt has bought 1-2 exclusive titles. Nintendo do their own thing. Consumers never benefit from a monopolization of the market.

Too bad, Xbox was the only family-friendly brand in terms of digital features. Sony is out of the question, they don't even share Cloudsave and I don't even invest a minute in games where I have to worry that my game saves will be lost forever when the console dies. My wife and kids will sink their time into Nintendo and I'll stick with Steam. Let's see what “gaming interaction” remains possible.

After all, most games today have crossplay, although I don't see the point in buying a game 2-3-4 times. License sharing in the family was golden under Xbox, but I don't see those licenses existing in 5 years the way Microsoft is going. Who tells Booty that his “spend Sony out of business” was the dumbest execution ever?
