If anyone wants to check out a fencing community's commentary:

Feel free to register and ask questions. Everyone is always too eager to have more attention for the sport.

based on these Olympics do you / they think that fencing will increase or decrease in popularity? On the one hand its a giant clusterfuck, on the other hand everybody is takling about it and they are reaching people that normally wouldnt watch it.

Was there a technical error in the fencing match? Got nervous when I tuned in and only saw the Italian standing on the piste by himself.

Choi's outfit had an issue where it wasn't registering hits properly. He just had to change his jacket and get his equipment checked.

So if a team won a silver medal in every single event in the Olympics, but no golds, they would be worse than a team which won a gold medal in dressage and no other medals?

There is no better or worse it's all about single events

Nobody wins the Olympics as such no idea why people are so bothered about it

I think it will increase in popularity as far as participation (fencing has a surprising amount of athletes worldwide and especially in the US, and it's growing steadily).

But as far as profile, it will remain neutral. As you can tell, it's not very spectator friendly. It's incredibly fun to fence, but the rules just don't lend themselves to an audience. There would have to be some serious changes to to the way the game is played, but I'm afraid that would take away from the sport.

I think fencing is already gaining popularity. It will always be popular in countries with a long tradition like Italy and France, but now there are a lot of Asian fencers too and they've becoming good since they're trained by European coaches.
