But this difference is that most of the swimming events are run by the same people for the most part. Running it is not that common for people to be competing in multiple distances. This has always happened with swimming, before Phelps there was Spitz. Carl Lewis is not the norm but we have Missy Franklin, Phelps, Lochte, Ian Thorpe, etc.

Just now there was a commercial saying watch Lochte in one of his strongest events. These swimmers can compete in all of them but they just have their preferences because there are so many similarities. Comparing swimming's huge amount of medals to track is just stupid.

But isnt that exactly why swimmers like Franklin, Phelps etc. stand out? Bolt has to win one race and he's the King of the World, Phelps only became relevant by winning 8.

I have pretty much zero interest left in swimming at this point. It's the most overexposed sport at the Summer Olympics.

that's only because there's no track & field in the first week, it'll be exactly the same next week. they should alternate between competitons more.

Phelps may win 8 but there were people before who won multiple events. It is common in the pool. 8 isn't and should be applauded but I really don't see how someone can't say that the swimming medals are over represented.

Its great, thats what it is.

Also impressed China didn't fight it. They know they dun fucked up and are manning up.

The Chinese statal press had already condemned the players' actions and had suggested that, in case they ended up getting medals, no one should applaud them.

Those guys are fucked.

It was the head coach's decision anyway. It had nothing to do with the players.

Tomorrow is looking weak. Friday Track and Field starts, though. Woooo!
Women's Gymnastics Individual All-Around. Don't miss it.

Tomorrow has the women's Archery finals. Thus, tomorrow is awesome.
OMG.

Thanks for reminding.

The thing is you can put swimming in your sentences and you would come to the exact same conclusion. 800's don't do 100's etc etc

switching between disciplines is a 1000 times easier in swimming. in the 2008 olympics 8 out of the top 10 medal earners where swimmers. just one athletic guy in the top ten: usain bolt and what he did was unreal.

sorry if i wasnt clear enough. i meant that the medals in swimming are already devalued in the public's eye; you've to win 8 in order to get the same kind of attention a 100m sprinter gets.

im sorry but throwing matches to get favorable seeds is smart mechanics. its the stupid round system thats in place is whats wrong.

it was even more interesting that in the indonesia vs korea match both teams were deliberately trying to lose. it was like that malcom in the middle episode where they were trying to lose in billards.

anytime there is META like this its just makes it more amazing.

Velodrome tomorrow, anyone else excited?!

Fuck yeah. The coolest looking Olympic events.

Tell that to the people who paid big money to watch actual matches.

And, well, no. Stuff like this isn't "smart" anything. It's just a way of crapping all over everything the Olympics are supposed to represent.

Isn't this exact system why FIFA makes the last game of group play simultaneous? I support the decision to kick them out, but I'd also be OK if both teams were given a "loss/forfeit" so that their whole goal was for naught.

The 2 silver medalists from men's 200m freestyle are going to be in 1500m freestyle. In fact, one of them holds the world record for 1500m.

The correct answer should be: because people love watching it. It makes no sense to cut down the number of events on a sport that draw huge ratings around the world.

Basketball works because big national match stages are rare.

Football is so pointless, even with the age limit. It's not the highlight of anything. Get football out. No one wants to sit through this tournament really. I can't get myself to watch a whole match, even the final. Now that the women had a massively successful world championship there's no need for women's football either. OUT.

Actually, the most recent match with the GB women's team had the highest attendance (70,000) of any post-war women's football match.

Football should not go, why should the most popular sport in the world not be contested in the largest sporting championship in the world? Nobody watches it because usually there are only 3 players worth watching in each team, and because there are other bigger football tournaments where we can see all the best players. The Olympics has been traditionally been more about events that don't see much coverage outside of the Olympics like track & field and swimming any way, but that doesn't mean sports like football shouldn't be in the games. It's a small event in comparison to other football tournaments, but it still counts.

Coolest venue, too.

The disqualification seems a lot more appropriate after actually seeing them "play".

ticket holders watch more than one match. plus the system is whats broken, because of the way the draws works you could essentially have #1 and #2 teams face off at the start of elimination and that means whoever loses will place something like 8th which is just complete nonsense. make a system where teams are drawn accordingly.

they dont even have a respchage to compensate for stupid seeding.

Not a huge baseball fan but I really miss seeing some of these countries like Cuba kick ass. Such a slap in the face to the US and many Latin and Asian countries all because Europe does not have any teams.

What time is the archery finals?

It starts 4:00am Eastern, wrapping up around 10:30 for the Gold Medal match.

Highlighted selections:

Schuh (FRA) vs. Choi (KOR) 4:13 am (This is Queen Glasses from the .gif)

Ki B.B. (KOR) vs. Hayakawa (JPN) 4:39 am (Princess String-mark. Also, be careful with Google searches for Hayakawa, seems to be someone else with a similar name that causes an auto-correct)

It got kicked out because there were uncertainties about their doping policies and the IOC wanted assurances the best baseball players (MLB) would be there.

She's our goalie and the best player in the team.

What were the Chinese reactions to the badminton disqualifications? I'm always interested in hearing how they react to things like this.

they put a good media face and denounced it when they were essentially the ones that started the domino of events by having the #1 pair in the world to lose deliberately.

Half of them blame the coach, half of them blame the new rule change, which clearly backfire on the face of Badminton league. Also a big potion think the athelics deserved to be DQ'd.

I would like to read more but the thread was promptly deleted. ;)
