That's because of tradition, training knowledge etc. Italy dominates Fencing, but that's not because they are genetically better, but because they have a long tradition and great coaches. Asian countries nowadays have become much better at Fencing (look at Korea and China taking gold medals) after they signed up Italian and French coaches.
I don't think both Korea and China had Italian or French coaches.

Do you know how an asymptote works? around 25 million people, that line is so close to 0 it really doesn't make much of a difference.
Let's say there are two athletes for long jump, as an example. You want the best two athletes for that event. If you have 25 million people, you can pick two from that total. If you have a billion people, you can pick two from that total. Therefore, you have a huge number of people that you can pick from, and if combined well with training, funding, access to equipment and so on, you have a bigger chance of finding two absolutely exceptional athletes, because the fact is you have a bigger pool to pick those two people from.

Even if that is true, vaaast majority of 20-50M countries can't afford to be very competitive in 40-50 disciplines at the same time. China and the US can, so they dominate the Olympic Games.

To be exact Britain is the name for England and wales, great Britain adds Scotland in to and you already know the name for the full country

Nope, england and wales is called "england and wales" :P

Great Britain (Britannia majoris) is the main landmass, islands and islets, though NOT encompassing the crown dependencies....yes, this is all completely ridiculous. Hooray for dozens of dark age and medieval kingdoms existing in a tiny isle for the past two milennia.

Even more ridiculous? "The British Isles" encompasses ireland as well.

Western countries do a lot better at getting their youth in sport than China does. If you are not tall and good there is no league for you to play Basketball. You are 12 years old and can't make your school team than there is no option for you. The notion of sports outside of school is non existent in China. The kids who are not the elite are not in good shape as they dont have any options. The West there is so much to do.

i see, guess that explains why they cant catch up as quickly in football (soccer)

Murray has been gradually getting better and better this year, so I really hope he can do it.

It would be an incredible shame if Jimmy Carr's long lost brother won, but I know I'm in the minority with my views.

Sir Steve Redgrave, speaking to BBC One about why Team GB rowing has been so successful in London: "Each year someone is willing to learn how to go that little bit better with how to improve the team. The support team that we have is where a lot of the finances have gone in to make sure that our athletes are in the best position, so that when they push away from that landing stage they are the best prepared they can be. This is our best-ever regatta, our best before this day was 1908. We are wondering where we can go from here and maybe in Rio we can go better."

Finances are crucial, we really need to make sure we invest properly after these games in continuing from where we are and trying to improve.

A large problem with their football teams is that corruption is so prevalent in that sport that often there are people on the national team even that have paid to be there or on high level teams.

Was the Russian guy okay in the end?

No update yet. He was taken to the hospital.

Something Michael Vaugh said and I'm inclined to agree:

"Surely the government will use the inspiration of the Olympics to make sure all schools give kids at least 1 hour of sport every day... "

One hour every day? That would have *killed* me!

Population definitely has an effect on total medals won. An enormous rich country with lots of facilities will be competitive in more events. Combing Europe into one team they'd definitely win more events than any of their constituent nations, still spending the same per person.

My mind can't accept that.

If I open a sports club in an area with 5 million people and another in an area with 500 people, I'm going to get the same amount of people attending both?

Meaning of the 5 million people, some of them have no chance to compete in sports. For economic reasons or simply for scarcity of facilities. So you really shouldn't be impressed by the USA vs. China, and population ratios misrepresent performance for a lot of countries.

When I was 6-12 years old I was playing soccer for 3-4 hours every day (sometimes other sports). I was still terrible though, though not as a goalkeeper.

The China women team who won a gold medal have a French coach, they bowed to him and said merci.

This is an article about a preview of Fencing in London:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/07/12/oly-fenc-preview-idUSL2E8HSEVR20120712

In Athens, Christian Bauer coached Italy's Aldo Montano, currently world champion, to gold then coached China's Zhong Man to Beijing gold,

Zhong will try to repeat in London but his former coach will now be working with Russia's world number two Alexey Yakimenko and his team mates.

Perhaps.

I must admit I hated sports during my school days though, but most of that was down to our teachers and the awful changing room conditions.

Any Brits here who still can't bring themselves to wanting Murray to win? I hope he smashes the fuck out of Federer, as much as I admire him. I'm addicted to Gold

Sucks that all the paper sites are covering Ennis and Farah more than they're giving to Rutherford. What he did was equally, if not more, impressive because he wasn't a favourite!

Maybe the same reason why the NFL has been getting higher ratings the last few years, have been the same reasons why NBC taped delayed Primetime Showcase is breaking 36 year old records - the econamics in the States have gotten worse.

I guess they probably just prepared more material for the favorites.
