If you have seen the toll it takes on the athletes you wouldn't be talking "this nonsense". They probably walk faster than you can jog.
Id watch it if they wore proper suits.

"Youre nothing but a common jogger!!"

Brits had a funny attitude about it after they lost to Korea. They spend like 4 pages of this thread discussing about how they couldn't care less about football, lol.
Well, I didn't want to call people out, but yeah.
I always wondered how that works. Where the line is.

I mean any stumble could look like a jog for a couple steps. How lenient are they?
Basically, it is considered a jog if you don't have at least one of your feet on the ground at any point.

A judge comes and waves a card in from of their face. I think they get 2 warnings before ejection. The guy that was #3 last year got ejected close to the end.

You have to always have 1 foot on the ground, but 2 feet off the ground is okay if it's very slight and not apparent to human eye. When they show these guys in slow motion, they always seem to have both feet off the ground slightly.

The obvious next step is for a new event to be created where the athletes have to have both feet on the ground at all times. Olympic Shuffling.

Anyone have Verizon FIOS? I'd love to watch the livestream, but I'm sure the Username/Password and neither is my mom. Any assistance would be appreciated.

The sports that have a ton of countries participating are the least likely to be cut. There were 56 athletes in the race.

I could get way more people than that to come thuumb wrestle.....olympic sport am confirmed.

Y NO ARM WRESTLING? (this one is semi serious....could be fun)

Their should be an event at the Olympics where people compete to see who can whine the most on an internet forum about how sports their country is getting humiliated at should be cut.

You would win obviously. I mean your whine about people whining was so stealthy I almost missed it.

(People are just having fun......really the walking one is just weird....don't think anyone seriously thinks any other events should be cut)

I was only talking about things that would get cut. Getting in is a different matter.

You can reduce a lot of sports into fake ridiculousness.

Swimming backwards.
Swimming like a butterfly.
Throw a long thing very hard.
Throw a heavy thing very hard.
Jumping over things while running.
Throw a ball into a basket more than the other team.
Etc.

The only thing I really think should be removed are the equestrian events, since I don't think animals should be apart of the games.

Forgotten about that. May as well include NASCAR. If I had my choice of events to cut Equestrian and Shooting would be gone (not sports imo).
Speed walking is iffy but it kinda falls into the absurd category like those others you posted.

People are annoyed with swimming simply because how many variations they've come up with for it. Having a few events is all well and good, but it seems like they've come up with every variation of swimming and then made it an Olympic event. But they didn't stop there as they've decided that you'd have those swimming events at various distances and with team relays.

Oh GAF. Shit talking about race walking. The event has been in Olympics for over hundred years now. One foot has to be on the ground all the time. So they give warning if not.

Keep the freestyle events, get rid of everything else.

Has been silly for 100 years too. Gives me the giggles when I see it on TV.

(there is no real reason to remove it though)

It is tad silly, but besides that, I watch it to see drama over the warnings. Sometimes leaders get dsq'd. 50km event seems to last forever (3-4hrs).

People are only annoyed about that because the U.S. has won a million swimming medals the last couple Olympics.

Here are the DQ rules in race walking:

In Race Walk events, an athlete must (to the human eye) be in contact with the ground at all times, unlike in running events, where both feet are momentarily off the ground. The leading leg must be straight from the moment it is first in contact with the ground, and the technique looks very different to ordinary walking. Athletes must be incredibly disciplined to fight the urge to break into a run for extra speed.

Judges are stationed at points along the course and will be looking closely at the athletes’ technique. If a judge is unhappy about any aspect, they will show a yellow paddle to the athlete as a warning. If an athlete is clearly not complying with the rules, the judge will show a red paddle. If an athlete is shown three red paddles by three different judges they are disqualified.

The real thing the Olympics need is to be expanded at least one more week --there's barely enough time to follow most of the events, and news about successes keep getting buried one under the other due to the quickness of the games. It also sucks for athletes who prepare for four years for the event only to get knocked out in the span of a day.

I understand this might create some issues considering the Paralympics are immediately afterwards.

Men's singles badminton bronze match is 1-1 Korea vs. China going into final set.

Pretty interesting match, slower paced than others would play. Cool to see the different style. Finals match will much more fast paced I imagine.

Lin Dan already won the final.

Omnium starting now. 4km individual pursuit.

Personally, I think it finally got interesting today. Plenty of goals and entertaining matches overall.
That's because we don't. The GB team didn't exist before this Olympics, barely trained together, contains a fraction of our main footballing "talent" and only an England "die-hard" will spend any mental energy being upset about it.

Stupidly good BBC ratings for last night, although there's some conflict as to what they exactly were:

@cod_rob said:
15 Million watched Ennis smash it last night while 16 million watched Super Mo bag gold.

@rogermosey said:
Stunning viewing figures for last night's amazing athletics. 17.1m watched Mo Farah win gold, and 16.3m saw Jess Ennis's triumph.

I suspect the first figure is the 15-minute peak, the latter is the 5-minute peak, since I know they track both.

If people are wondering about Mo's celebration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mLvTDuWRyc&feature=player_detailpage#t=1522s

That's traditional though, and has enough following to keep it. You don't need to watch everything you know ;)

I think the only argument for excluding/including sport should be how widely is it competed at a high level globally. Eg baseball isn't done at a high level by enough countries to include. Possibly cricket and rugby too, although they are widely supported across the commonwealth.

The Olympics is a perfect venue for minority sports to get anmomentnin the spotlight. It should be inclusive. The guy in the 50m pistol probably trains hard too, why kick him out just because its not fashionable?

I wonder if there are restrictions for individual sports from the IOC. Eg in theory the swimming, athletics, rowing and cycling could go on for the entire two weeks as they all have their own dedicated arenas.

Honestly,so what? If you aren't into swimming, you'll just watch the headline races (like a non athletics fan will just watch the 100m). If you are into swimming, you'll appreciate the different disciplines. How is breaststroke vs butterfly different to épée vs foil? Still poking people just with different pointy things.
