PS4 has 8 GB OF GDDR5 RAM

$699 to $799 would be a rough guess of the console price..may be higher ddr5 is very expensive and I dont see sony taking a $500 loss on each console with their bank balance...the ram itself would be around $500 and the complexities of manufacturing on a board for a console seem troublesome.my gut feel is we will see a revision down the track...hd specs are also not there which means it may not be final

So it was 250 for the ram alone even before the upgrade according to you huh?

LOL.

And this is just one of the first wave of games for the PS4.
Launch game (or very close to it I'm sure).

The change in setting is very welcomed.

but i was told diminishing returns?
After Killzone and FFVII's videos I want to see games for real, on my TV, running on a PS4. I do expect diminishing returns kick in, but that doesn't mean the jump can't be impressive still. And honestly, it's kind of hard to top the jumps from a few untextured polygons to a lot of textured polygons, then to a high resolution while rendering enough polygons to actually properly animate faces (holy shit MGS2 and FFX were mind blowing.)

Just shows how way too many people pretend to be experts on here. I got laughed at when I said I believe it will be 8GB.
At the time the idea that they would be putting 16 ram chips on the board seemed more than a little silly. Stacking has to be in play here otherwise they'd be looking at around 32 chips on board to hit 8 gigs.

You guys sure he didn't confuse the dev kit spec? Is there a confirmation after the show maybe from a dev here?

Did somebody in this thread say PS4 for $599? $699?

cmon bruh

I'd say $500 for it. $450 if they are feeling extra bold, but I doubt that.

Lol, Not even close to that price. Nothing we know about the PS4 is all that expensive beside the ram.

We're looking at $500 at the most!

And just like that the Wii U's chance for receiving next gen 3rd party ports just faded to nil. It was nice knowing you Nintendo.

8 times the available RAM in comparison... 176 GB/s unified memory bandwidth...

PC Gaf has got to be shaking in their boots lolz, this machine has a larger amount of GDDR5 RAM than all of their available singular non SLIed/crossfired graphics cards lol, although it may yet be slower than your garden variety GTX 680. Even the upcoming NVIDIA Titan won't have 8 GB GDDR5 RAM lol.

How the hell are they gonna port their games to PC? Will we be seeing 8 GB RAM minimum for system requirements for pc ports? Motherboards don't even support onboard DDR4 RAM yet and DDR5 is still being finalized by JEDEC lol.

Kudos to Sony, you've made PC GAF very very envious and jealous today lol.

Are devs even going to use all of that ram when games are being made with multiplat in mind ?

Can't believe they decided to go 8gb gddr5 but with all the new sharing and stream features they announced it makes sense that the ps4 would require a lot more ram to multitask. It'll be curious to see how much will be usable for strictly gaming

If Sony really does launch the thing above $499 they really made a mistake.

Even with all of the extra's we expect to see in gaming consoles going over that barrier twice in a row seems... ill-advised.

Simply means that multiplats WILL not suck any more on PS4.

Also I am quoting this for the new page for people concerned about the price:

Pertaining to the price, remember that Sony will sell at a loss. However, given the support they have been garnering, they are gambling on the pay off in the long run.

And pertaining to people's fear about the hardware costing north of $500, I think it will not happen primarily because of the tech possibilities that will be ushered in the next two years in the form of DDR3. I have read here on multiple occasions here that when ready, Sony could swap out GDDR5 for DDR3 with 1024 bit I/O (bus width) and down clock it (or not) to match the 176GB/sec figure. That will make things much cheaper and cooler in the long run when they may even switch to DDR4 further down the line with the same integration principle.

wow @ that post. Where did you get those numbers?

I know with a graphics card higher VRAM lets you go to higher resolutions, add better textures like with mods and IQ settings. But with the PS4 since it is unified, does it do more? Does a CPU like the 8 core PS4 benefit from DDR5 and in what way?

helllloooooooooooooooooooo

where are you my haters. i said 8 gig RAM and you said i am a lunatic a troll

Now whos right?????

I expect an apology from everyone who PMed me slurs

ahhahahaa sorry but those are pretty funny estimates. Anyway my guess is STILL 399/499. BUT after learning of 8gb I could see it being 449/499 or slightly less.

This thing absolutely positively will not and cannot go above 500. Don't need to be an expert businessman to know that.

Amazing. Me and my friends were jawdropped by the news of 8GB GDDR5!

I really hope the system isn't expensive :( It sounds like a Monster.

The Nvidia Titan, a limited production Videocard announced this week, which is going to retail for one thousand dollars, has 6gig of GDDR5 in it: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/19/nvidias-gtx-titan-supercomputer-gpu-revealed

You're telling me that Sony is making 8gig of that same memory on all of their PS4 consoles coming out between November and December?

I doubt it, but it will be amazing to see what happens from now on.

For starters it's not the same memory, it runs at much lower clockspeed (better yields since you don't need to cherrypick parts stable at higher voltage) and has much lower bandwidth in ps4.

Second of all a hd6670 with 2GB gddr5 costs 67 euros at retail with 21 percent sales tax here. And most of the cost of that card is the gpu, PCB and cooler.

Nvidia make like 800 dollars profit on every titan sold, it's a garbage comparison.
