PS4 has 8 GB OF GDDR5 RAM

One thing I should mention, and people would know if they were watching the GT live stream post conference is what EPIC's Mark Rein said about the RAM situation. He made the analogy of Sony answering their love letter. It could mean great things down the line for Sony especially when it comes to running games built on UE4.

How good is this for open world games (GTA, Just Cause and the like)?

RAM is one of the most important things you can have for true open world games. Both amount and speed, which 8GB of GDDR5 more than provides in both categories.

The real question is if 720 has a lot less than this, will games be developed with the lowest common denominator in mind or will they actually take advantage of Sony's RAM?

Next. Fucking. Generation.

Did he really day that? I didnt see much ue4 stuff

8 Gigs of RAM is very nice. GDDR5 is neat. Looks like they're going all out on this thing.

Not sure how much they want to charge for the PS4 though. This console is gonna cost quite a bit, and my personal spending limits are rather low.

So that probably means the first wave of PS4s are all going to die within a year. Until all the kinks are worked out.

There is no other explanation. I wonder how they will keep this thing cool.

8GB GDDR5 trully unified (without even edram or DDR3) is truly good thing for developers.

They probably already did. We've been reading bullshit leaks for a long time now.

EDGE was right and GopherD even hint at it .
Yeah edge said that it little bit more power full but unless MS step it up i can see mutil platform games looking best on PS4 as time goes by .

All the hardcore gamers love this but when it comes to the masses 5-6 bills for the console would be an epic failure. I'm not sure how they get the price down.

$699 to $799 would be a rough guess of the console price..may be higher ddr5 is very expensive and I dont see sony taking a $500 loss on each console with their bank balance...the ram itself would be around $500 and the complexities of manufacturing on a board for a console seem troublesome.my gut feel is we will see a revision down the track...hd specs are also not there which means it may not be final

Yea, it was in the post launch section where Geoff met up with multiple people (from Blizzard, Bethesda, Ubisoft and Epic). When Geoff pressed to know if MS also answered their "love letter" he said that he could only say that Sony has answered for now.

In the racing game, I still saw pop ins. I really hope that this generation, clever algorithms allied with this huge RAM amount alleviates this issue.
I take offense at the idea that loading times are a thing of the past though.

Maybe if all of your software is running off the HDD. But you've still got a pretty large limiter in disc drives.

I can't believe they're putting 8gb of GDDR5 in there. Absolutely amazing and insane. If the rumors are true and the OS footprint in game is only 512mb there will be 7.5gb of RAM available to devs. Just nuts.

Unless I'm mistaken, this would allow something like Uncharted to have full blown ruins, towns, and the like. Ignoring development costs/hours, Drake in a Zelda-style dungeon would be something.

If that proves to be the case, maybe we'll at least see better performance. The speed alone should have a big impact.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

8 GIGA BYTES OF GRAPHICS DOUBLE DATA RATE ONE TWO THREE FOUR COUNT EM, FIVE RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES UP IN THIS PIECE, PEACE.

Killzone in particular looked incredible (graphically), especially for a launch title. I can't wait to be blown away when a new God of War or Uncharted comes out in a few years utilizing most of the processing power.

All it takes is slightly longer initial loading then streaming everything. Definitely doable.

And just like that the Wii U's chance for receiving next gen 3rd party ports just faded to nil. It was nice knowing you Nintendo.

8 times the available RAM in comparison... 176 GB/s unified memory bandwidth...

PC Gaf has got to be shaking in their boots lolz, this machine has a larger amount of GDDR5 RAM than all of their available singular non SLIed/crossfired graphics cards lol, although it may yet be slower than your garden variety GTX 680. Even the upcoming NVIDIA Titan won't have 8 GB GDDR5 RAM lol.

How the hell are they gonna port their games to PC? Will we be seeing 8 GB RAM minimum for system requirements for pc ports? Motherboards don't even support onboard DDR4 RAM yet and DDR5 is still being finalized by JEDEC lol.

Kudos to Sony, you've made PC GAF very very envious and jealous today lol.

RAM is the only area > PC. The rest of the specs a high end PC laughs at.

PC games will benefit greatly from the jump to next gen.

Quoting Pristine_Condition again:

Yeah he did. In his interview on GT, he was very excited.

I didn't pull all his quotes (there's a great part of the interview where he's rubbing his hands together like a Mad Scientist that I HOPE we'll be seeing in .gif form soon) but here were two pull quotes that Sony will be ecstatic to hear:

Mark Rein on PS4 and Unreal Engine:

Mark Rein: "They stepped it up, there's no question. I mean when we made that demo we called it our 'Love Letter to Hardware Manufacturers'...and someone answered our letter."

...

Geoff Keighley: "Is it enough for five or six years? A lot of people were wondering about the leap was going to be. Pete Hines from Bethesda said here the leap between from ps3 to ps4 was not going as great as 2 to 3 given the move to HD and things like that…"

Mark Rein: [interrupting] "I disagree. NO, I think this a big leap.

The PS3 was decent…but this is spectacular."

I'm super excited about 8GB of GDDR5. But I'm also very concerned about the console price. I was expecting $399, but there's no way it will happen now. I guess $499 is more realistic.

So let's say the extra 4GB of RAM adds $100 to the cost. For a console with at least 5-6 years of life, I'd say that's not a bad tradeoff for how big of a deal this seems to be. Less than two games.

But yeah, average consumer won't understand.

Can I take a look at your memory price sheet, please?

Suicide for Sony. MS would be laughing to the bank.

I think Microsoft is going the Wii route this gen. They don't care about tech specs as much as it running Netflix and other media. They are also probably counting first party games and to get money from gold subscriptions.

This feels so much like PS3 launch/Vita launch it's funny. "OMG THE SPECS! BYE NINTENDO/MS"Until I hear a price and see launch games in stone I ain't biting.

Just shows how way too many people pretend to be experts on here. I got laughed at when I said I believe it will be 8GB.

Pertaining to the price, remember that Sony will sell at a loss. However, given the support they have been garnering, they are gambling on the pay off in the long run.

And pertaining to people's fear about the hardware costing north of $500, I think it will not happen primarily because of the tech possibilities that will be ushered in the next two years in the form of DDR3. I have read here on multiple occasions here that when ready, Sony could swap out GDDR5 for DDR3 with 1024 bit I/O (bus width) and down clock it (or not) to match the 176GB/sec figure. That will make things much cheaper and cooler in the long run when they may even switch to DDR4 further down the line with the same integration principle.
