PS4 has 8 GB OF GDDR5 RAM

The RAM is crazy, and I shudder to think how much this bad boy will cost. Getting one, day one, obviously.

It will be interesting to eventually hear when this RAM size was finalised by Sony. All the recent rumours were spot on about everything else, yet were so off the mark for memory. Folks claiming insider knowledge and stating the PS4 would have 4GB probably did so in good faith, based on old info.

How old that info was is key. I can't see that end of 2013 would be an achievable target if Sony changed specs so significantly in the past week. These specs must have been final in the latter part of 2012.

I'm guessing that Sony decided to put all their chips on the table as a last minute decision. I think their main tactic is to entirely outperform the NextBox, whatever the financial cost might be. That way they might achieve a fraction of the PS2 glory.

RAM is one of the most important things you can have for true open world games. Both amount and speed, which 8GB of GDDR5 more than provides in both categories.

The real question is if 720 has a lot less than this, will games be developed with the lowest common denominator in mind or will they actually take advantage of Sony's RAM?

will be developed with xbox in mind like in this generation. Only Sony franchises will use that power....

You were right and it's awesome .
Still surprise that we did not see the consoles since you said investor did .
But yeah people should eat crow because you were right .

investors were all impressed but SONY has some plans to change designs. maybe they want to make it more glossy

also that 470$ thing..they were supposed to announce the price but they are just doing a survey to find out the sweet price people would be willing to pay

Well, it's possible 60 FPS becomes prolific again, like it did in the PS2 generation. Probably would also taper off by the end though.

It'd be nice, because I -love- 60fps very much, but...yknow.

Ugh I love 60fps.

It's never Arthur Gies' fault when he's wrong.

First rule of journalism. When you get called out about incorrect facts, blame your source, not your own lack of independent corroboration or research.

Someone make a GIF of Aegis and thuway driving in a Tesla S.

Man thanks for the info .

I suspect a good chunk is for the streaming/downloading/videorecording that the system does alongside it. Probably 2GB?

I think people expect 1GB for the system now, their is specific video hardware in the console to take the brunt and from earlier rumours the OS was only going to eat up 512MB, so I guess just double everything until we hear more? lol.

What I don't understand is why they would put such a big amount of really expensive premium ram on a console, and then lock 1/4, half of it away from the developers?

It makes no sense.

And all of the times people tried to correct me with "lol, newegg prices". I should be more persistent next time.

I hope so, because I really love 60fps. I just hope people have a LONG way to go until they make that framerate compromise.

I love 60 when its needed..for me tho having the default resolution be 1080p is the big one..I hated sub 720p resolution upscaling last gen on a 1080p plasma..shit looked horrible.

i just read the whole thread

so..

this mean 4K games are possible?
this mean Agni's Philosophy at 1080p60 easily?

why nvidia is going to sell titan at 1000$ having 6GB GDDR5?

i'm clueless about tech specs.

If thats true then there is a good chance that everything we have seen tonight only targeted the originally claimed 4gb.

In which case...Oh My...

I am adding this up correctly right, this is a 16x jump in memory, what were previous generations?

Jeez, what is this, some sort of PS2 game or something.

60 fps is no brainer with 8 gig GDDR5
This statement shows a complete misunderstanding of specifications and how they interact with different aspects of game performance. Really, there are few technical specifications as far removed from impacting achievable frame rates as the amount of memory.

So you're saying 8GB GDDR5 won't bring dad home? :(

As someone who doesn't care all that much about graphics, how will having all of this speedy RAM benefit me? Sincere question.

Holy shit. Thats a lot of RAM. To the point that I wonder what the hell they're going to do with it if the rest of the architecture isn't from the year 2020

?????????

The million dollar question. I would rather not dare to guess given I used to think that the best we were going to get was BF3 on 720p or dynamic 1080p and very high settings by the end of the next generation.
