Having second thoughts about getting a PS4 during the launch

Become a late adopter.

Everything is cheaper, you avoid the bad games, and selection is good. If there are limited release titles just buy them before you get the console.

Yes I hate paying $60, and lately I am controlling the hype, this is why having a backlog is important, it can keep you from buying on launch.

It's almost never worth it to buy a console at launch. Definitely not a PS4, that launch lineup is booty.

Yet here I am with a day 1 pre-order. I'm too impatient, I like my new tech >_>

Yuripaw, our tastes in games is probably very close and I will be holding up off buying a PS4 until the next year, for the same reasons.

To me, the system is going to be a winner and the more support it has from the start the healthier and more appealing the platform will be for developers and publishers.

I want to get one at launch, I'm just worried about the inevitable hiccups you have to deal with as an early adopter. There's always something....

I also wish there was a truly exciting launch game to go with it. Final Fantasy XV or The Last Guardian would have been amazing.

Mine was paid in full, and I cancelled my order.

I'm sick of shooting games. I'm not going next-gen until some interesting Japanese games finally come out.

It's almost never worth it to buy a console at launch.

I see this sentiment a lot, and completely disagree. Every console I wanted at launch, I bought, and loved. How is that not worth it? Yeah I could have gotten it cheaper with more games a year or more later, but sometimes saving a few bucks isn't the biggest deal in the world.

I will be getting a PS4 at launch. I actually was not going to get a xbox one at launch. But will probably get one of them day one also. I have a PC that has a Intel i7 3770, a nvidia 670 Oc 16 gigs of memory that can out perform both consoles. And the games that I am most interested in are coming to PC and Next Gen. But I feel that consoles drive the innovation in gaming because that is where the money is. I personally have been waiting for new consoles for about 2 years. So I gladly support Microsoft and Sony, 1st party games will be great and and consoles will keep AAA gaming around. Everytime I play a game on my phone outside of kariosoft games I cringe thinking what would the world be like if all we had to play was Angry Birds and Temple Run.

Sorry Nintendo... I will not be buying a WiiU. I have no interest in playing current gen games 3 years from now. You lost me at the Wii for consoles. I do have a 3ds Xl though. But even when I play that I think how great it would be if Nintendo had put the power and tech of the Vita in the 3ds.

I'm about to build a new SFF gaming PC, so I'll be able to play the
superior
PC version of launch window games I care about. I'll definitely be jumping in for Destiny, so I might just keep my pre-order. I have plenty of time to decide, so I'll wait until closer to launch.

Agreed. I'm kind of baffled at the amount of people that aren't up for a new gen.

I totally understand if its a money issue, and I'm sure none of us have enough time in the day for more games, but to see people saying its a poor decision to get one at launch is kind of silly.

I know they are mostly trying to justify their own decision but it comes across pretty funny on a gaming forum.

What changed between E3 and now?
Realization that none of the next-gen titles really appealed to me outside of KH3, FFXIII and X on Wii U, and likely none of those will be out for quite a while.

PS3, however, is getting tons of great Japanese stuff: Xillia 1&2, X/X-2 HD, KH 1.5, Gran Turismo, etc., not to mention stuff like GTA 5.

For someone with tastes like mine, the next gen's announced titles leave a lot to be desired.

Personally never liked playing shooters on a PC so I can't wait for the PS4. Battlefield 4 and Planetside 2 is all I need. Being able to play those on a console with PC level graphics and performance has me so excited for the PS4 launch.

I'm considering cancelling mine. I just can't seem to get into games lately, and, right now, I struggle to justify the purchase based on my current disposition toward games.

It'll come back when you've got new hotness starring you in the face.

Maybe wait til TGS before making a decision?

I know, I usually get this feeling in my stomach when a new generation is about to start. In the past Soul Calibur did that for me for Dreamcast and Halo/DOA3 for the Xbox 1. To be honest I didn't get that feeling with 360 or PS3 at at launch.

Today I have that feeling with Killer Instinct, I don't know why but I'm really looking forward to playing it, something tells me it's going to be special and it's the only game giving me butterflies in my stomach :-)

When was the last time that TGS had a whole lot to offer really though? I feel like TGS has been very tame in terms of any kind of big news, and even then it's rarely talk of any western release talk. Let's assume I'm wrong though and TGS has some awesome next gen announcements...Even for the Vita, we had to wait months for certain games that Japan got much closer to launch, such as Gravity Rush, and Ragnarok Odyssey. Just because Japan is getting a certain game for launch wouldn't mean the west is anytime soon.

because launch lineups are usually shit, and then you have to deal with the post launch drought, and by the time there is a solid lineup available for said console, the thing is selling for at least $50 less.

If you don't want one don't buy one.

There are plenty of people that will buy yours! :-)

Think about it differently, you made someone else happy.

Not a single good reason to buy a console at launch any more. The pricing is ridiculous, the tech will be the least reliable and feature poor (generally) of future iterations of the console and the game selection is anemic.

Save your money. Wait for a game you absolutely must have...THEN buy.

Unless one of those 'must have' games is a launch title. :)

I think the phrase "worth is" is extremely subjective.

Some people think a console has to have 10 games they want in order to make the purchased justified. Some people think they have to wait for the first big price drop for the purchase to be "worth it".

It's all about what you're looking to get out of the experience. For me, I just want to see new games on the newest tech. I don't feel like waiting a couple years to save myself $100. I don't have to have a pile of games I'm interested in day one. I just need a few. I'll have a great time playing new games that look amazing this fall, and I'll have the console around to enjoy as the years go by. Saving a few dollars years later doesn't seem like a worthwhile tradeoff to me.

I don't understand the surprised tone some posters have regarding the release volume/quality.

Have some of you never been through a launch before?

Genesis, PSX, N64, PS2, GameCube, PS360, etc...they should guide your expectation and hopefully not leave you believing this launch is somehow subpar.

I starting to have them. Mainly because I missed out on a lot of good PS3 exclusives (only own a 360) so I might see how cheap those are and pick one up instead or if my brother wants to sell his I'll buy it.

Im with you OP. I think I will be set with wiiu and 3ds, plus ps360 for gta5 and beyond two souls. When the games I want start coming, that's when I get a ps4.

I have officially decided not to purchase the PS4 at launch, because there simply is not enough launch games to get me to spend $400 + $60 + tax day-one.

Supposing I do get a PS4 at some point, I will be interested in purchasing the following:

1) Infamous: Second Son
2) Knack
3) Watch_Dogs / Assassin's Creed 4 (if I don't already have them for the Wii U)

...and that's it. Not interested in the shooters or the racing games.

I dunno... Killzone SF looks to me like the closest thing to a bona fide killer app exclusive launch title in a long, long time. Killzone has never been my #1 favorite console FPS franchise, but I've always liked it a lot. It alone is enough to make me bite on day 1.

I'm getting a PS4 day 1, and will be picking up Watch Dogs, Battlefield 3, maybe AC4, and whatever indie stuff looks interesting. Those 3 big games alone should keep me busy until the next big releases. This is hardly a shit lineup this gen, just because there is cross gen stuff doesn't mean I'm not going to have a fucking blast playing this shit on my new PS4.

The only thing giving me pause right now is whether Sony will announce a PS4/Vita bundle that discounts the Vita enough to justify holding off my launch day pre-order for an additional month or two.

Yeah. New hardware, please.

You guys think too much. Just buy it, no one will die if you do.

Same here, I am getting a PS4 on launch. Sure, the games aren't great, but I am interested in seeing how Watch Dogs, Assassins Creed, Killzone and NBA 2k14 turn out.

I feel like I have seen at least 3 threads exactly like this. Its like people want to come on here and be talked into getting a system or something. I don't really understand what the point is of going on a message board, starting a thread saying "I am not really wanting to get a PS4" other than to see if others try to talk you into it. These threads confuse me since I do not understand the purpose of the OP. Are you wanting others to side with you? Try to change your mind? I really dont understand......

Either you want the system or not, either you like the launch games or not, get it if you want it, people will still like you regardless of your decision. I, personally, am excited for next gen.

I'm getting a PS4 at launch, but that doesn't mean I'll stop playing PS3 right away. Eventually, when PS4 hits its stride, I'll probably relegate the PS3 to a movie/entertainment box.

Personally, I think having PS4 and PS3 (or Xbone and 360) makes more sense than having PS3 and 360, since their libraries will be largely different over time, instead of 90% the same.

I'm with you OP, I'm very excited for what next gen has to offer but not so thrilled with the line-up so I will be waiting. Then again, I have a PC to fall back on.

I'm probably only gonna get one retail game and a handful of digital-only releases at or near launch. So it really doesn't make sense to get it day 1.

And yet I'm doing it anyway because it is fun to be a part of the new hardware conversation. Also, I doubt there will be a price drop before Infamous comes out, and that is a system seller to me.

^^^ That is amazing.

I've been thinking a lot about this lately and I'm starting to agree. I just discovered Steam Big Picture mode with a wireless 360 controller and it feels like my PC has effectively become my next gen console. I get to sit back on my couch, navigate a slick UI with a controller, and play all of the next gen games at higher settings than I would with a PS4. In that sense, I have no clue why I'd buy a PS4 at launch.

The catch for me is college. I'm starting my Freshman year in a week or so and there is no way in hell I'm taking my PC with me. The PS4 is small and portable, Remote Play is a hypothetical great feature for me as a Vita owner, and a PS4 is much more college friendly than a giant ass gaming PC.

If I was at any other point in my life though, I wouldn't be getting a PS4 at launch.

Yea, I felt the hype from e3 and preordered one, but I'm less enthused now a bit. I know launch is going to change that feeling again so I'm keeping the pre order.

I do have a small group excited for bf4, so that alone will make for a fun November, but an expensive one. Killzone campaign I hope turns out well, and upscaled ac4 etc, with the ps4 gamepad will be real nice.

Don't deceive yourself, you and all others will buy one. The simply truth is that not all games come to the pc. In fact many great games don't come to the pc. I look at my pc as my port, f2p and indie machine. Basically all AAA games come to console. Thats why you need a pc, a wii u(buy at <$200) and a ps4. Its the devastating 3 combo. Think of it as 2 jabs and the haymaker that knocks your opponent down to the mat.

I believe that if you're going to judge the PlayStation 4 on its retail availability of games on launch period, then it's a little disappointing. But it's ignoring the fact that the PS4 has a wealth of free to play games, indie games and you get a few indie games for free on top of your PSN Plus subscription.

Just sayin, but I think that some people are putting too much emphasis on the games you buy in the shop than the games you're getting on top from your service. Again we seem to be at this generation where no one heard of digital content and are being disappointed in a 'more HD version' of the games we already get on the display shelf of GAME.
