50 Movies. 50 Books. 1 year. - 2013 Edition

No clear consensus. Some people are counting individual TPBs, but those only collect 5-6 issues and can be finished in 20 minutes. I personally don't think that's book-worthy, especially if it's part of a long ongoing series.

It's all degrees and doing what you think is right.

I'd say the majority of people on here would count every individual volume, so you would have 19 "books" from it. I think that's questionable since you can finish all of it in less time than it takes to read one novel.

Personally, I'd count the entire collection you've read as one full book. I'm slowly working my way through all of Invincible (around 105 issues so far) and plan to count it as one book. I also counted the 36 issues of Remender's Uncanny X-Force as a book, since it's a finished series. By that logic, I would probably count the Crisis collection you listed.

Mumei has read a ton of comics and isn't counting them at all, so that's an even more restrictive view.

Yeah, I think I'll count Crisis due to the actual supplementary written content, but I'll try to keep most other comic-related stuff off the list.

Probably for the best. I have three comic-related entries on my list, added earlier in the year when I was more intimidated by reaching my goal. There's a solid chance I'll reconsider them once I get passed 50.

Interesting that choodi's list has comics when I'm about to ask about them:

Did we ever figure out some sort of "rule" for comics? I've read the entirety of The Walking Dead over the year, but didn't add them as it felt weird to do single issues, but would volumes count?

Also, what about "graphic novels" (dumb term) or standalone works? I just read Crisis on Infinite Earths: The Absolute Edition which also has some 90 odd pages of supplementary written stuff, so I feel like that least has got to count.

I'm OK with counting The Walking Dead volumes as they are reasonably substantial and I'm not counting 500+ page books as two. I figure they will balance out in the end.

However, as this is an individual thing, you need to feel right about why you count certain books/films in your list.

I'm OK with my list as it stands. I will not be reading many other comics etc after I am done with The Walking Dead. I'll be finishing Gulliver's Travels and probably reading some more Discworld and maybe some of the Malazan books. As I said, for me it will balance out in the end.

Since we're going off of the fiftyfifty.me site there are some rulings from the comments in the rule section. Regarding graphic novels and audio books yes on both counts.

The graphic novel issue was discussed back at the beginning of the year. See the posts around 180 of this thread. There used to be additional comments on the fiftyfifty site but they seem to have expired. If you really want to check you could always ask their Twitter.

New movie:

[*] Life of Pi ★★★½ - Visually astounding, but ultimately it failed to live up to the book for me. The supernatural elements translated much better in my imagination than the visuals in the film, and there were a couple moments where the CGI became distracting.

New book:

[*] John Scalzi - Old Man's War ★★★ - Didn't live up to the premise for me. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say the book's title is more than a bit misleading. I struggled to relate with the characters, particularly the protagonist who always knows the right thing to do or takes the perfect action in time to save the day. There were half a dozen groan moments for me when Perry would roll in like a white night and solve everything. Okay. I'll give at least the second book a chance to see if it hooks me.

New book:

[*] Brandon Sanderson - Steelheart ★★★½ - Excellent world building and characters, and a fun introduction to a new world. My sole complaint is the dialogue is firmly in the YA genre, which isn't a bad thing but was totally unexpected for me.

I really enjoyed reading all four books. Lies of Locke Lamora had a great worldbuilding and the characters were really likeable - but
a little bit sad because Lynch took much effort in introducing all those characters and then they are gone...
But I'm looking forward to book two. I won Gary Corby's book at a giveaway and was really surprised how much I liked this historical novel even though it was the third book in a series and I haven't read the first two so far. There is not much to say about Starship Titanic - it was just a great and entertaining read. And the only thing I say about Redshirts --> I can understand why it won the Hugo Award.
The first two movies were great too. I was just a bit disappointed by Epic - wasn't really my type of movie but I borrowed it from a friend, so no harm done :)

*) I have still not decided if I should count books with more than 500 pages as two. At the moment it looks like I'm going to manage to read 50 books, we'll see.

I'm really enjoying the Riyria Revelations Series. Currently listening to the last book.

As far as the movies go, I wasn't really blown away by any of them.

Best of quarter choices were rather hard this time.

I thought Epic was great. Much better than some of the other animated trash that has come out lately.

It does have to take the award for dumbest name for a film though. It's almost like they forgot to change the working title to the real title.

I haven't updated for months, but I also never picked up a book during the summer. But ever since the fall semester started, I've been reading like a madman. It seems like the less time I have, the more I read.

Pssssh, I got this shit on lockdown.

I see I just missed my chance with movie #33. Ah well. Nearly doubled my YTD movie count in September, feeling good about finishing this.

Yep, you and about three others not included on the list. I had to make the cut-off 37/37 based on the date, but I realize that knocking out the movies should be fairly easy for those who have completed the books.

Hell, you could theoretically knock out all 50 movies in December. The same doesn't hold true for the books. I'll have to revisit the way I prioritize books over movies in the tracker, but I haven't thought of a good way yet.

I thought Epic was great. Much better than some of the other animated trash that has come out lately.

It does have to take the award for dumbest name for a film though. It's almost like they forgot to change the working title to the real title.

maybe I just got a little bit too picky after all those films I watched this year :) especially Coraline!

If I were being entirely honest with my 'best of' highlights, Fionavar books 2 and 3 would be a tie for the best of this quarter as the whole saga is fantastic... but I didn't really want to go the 'tie' route, and as I'd already marked the 1st book as my choice last quarter, I kind of decided to stretch it a bit and pick the next in line so that I was selecting a 'new' book rather than the end of the series I was already reading.

Chariots of Fire is terrific. Don't know how I've managed to never see it before, especially since I'm a runner. Deep themes of faith and competitive drive and contentment vs desire. "I believe God made me for a purpose... but he also made me fast." Love it.

Tied with Rocky as my wife's favorite sports movie. It's not the most historically accurate film in the world, but it's darn good.

Even the somewhat dated Vangelis soundtrack still gives me goose bumps.

Reposting for the third time. I got some movie watching in and, while I'm still a bit behind, I'm confident I'll make it.

  • Midnight in Paris (2011, dir. Woody Allen) - ★★★
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011, dir. Michael Bay) - ★★
  • Argo (2012, dir. Ben Affleck) - ★★★★
  • Leathal Weapon (1987, dir. Richard Donner) - ★★★ - Shane Black's usual treat. It's christmas and a white guy and black guy join forces to take down crime. Fun in the usual spots but since I'd never seen it before some of the nostalgia is lost on me but it holds up well.
  • Red Riding Hood (2011, dir. Catherine Hardwick) - ★★ - While I wouldn't say it's bad I will say that it never truely achieves anything. It just moves along at its own pace never bothering anyone. Oldman is fun, regardless.
  • School of Rock (2003, dir. Richard Linklater) - ★★★½ - Enjoyable, well-made and predictable. But despite being made according to formula it manages to have heart.
  • Dreamcatcher (2003, dir. Lawrence Kasdan) - ★½ - It's all over the place but mostly it's just bad. The acting is odd, almost uncanny, and the story barely makes sense. The talent involved made me hope that the reviews had gotten this wrong.
  • Constantine (2005, dir. Francis Lawrence) - ★★½ - Predictable but entertaining. I'm not familiar with the graphics novels but apart from the by-the-formula story it kept things interesting.
  • Trolljegeren (2010, dir. André Øvredal) - ★★★½ - I'm not a fan of found-footage movies but this one pulls it off well. Good special effects and believable trolls.
  • Ultimate Avengers (2006, dir. Curt Geda, Steven E. Gordon) - ★ - Just bad. No class. Nothing about this is redeeming except where you can see the influence it had on The Avengers by Whedon. Never did anything even remotly interesting with the characters at hand.
  • Batman: Year One (2011, dir. Sam Liu, Lauren Montgomery) - ★★★½ - Compared to last night Avenger's movie and me almost deciding to skip these animated fares I was pleasently surprised. One of the better Batman-movies. It's too short if I've got one complaint. Will make one hell of a three-hour feature motion picture one day.
  • The Master (2012, dir. Paul Thomas Anderson) - ★★★★ - A deep exploration of human nature. I enjoy these movies a lot.
  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Extended Edition - ★★★★ - Some well-needed context and some more songs. That's what's been added and I feel the product is stronger as a whole. Looking forward to parts two and three.

  • Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (2013, Square Enix) - ★★★
  • Grand Theft Auto V [PS3] (2013, Rockstar North) - ★★★★
  • Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch [PS3] (2013, Level-5) - ★★★★ - I really liked it but... what we've got is a great story, great acting, great visuals, great music and fantastic production design plus a horribly broken combat system. One of the most coherent, well-told and mature story lines to date.
  • The Walking Dead: 400 days [PC] (2013, Telltale Games) - ★★★ - More of the same. It's good but there's too little. It's just a tease of things to come.
  • Mark of the Ninja [PC] (2012, Klei Entertainment) - ★★★ - Good stealth games are few and far between. This is good but a little boring and drawn out. Didn't keep my focused so I played it over a few months. It's good, though, if stealth's you're thing.
  • The Stanly Parable [PC] (2013, Galactic Cafe) - ★★★★ - I don't know what to make of it really. It truely is an adventure game and unlike anything that's been done before.
  • Remember Me [PS3] (2013, Dontnod Entertainment) - ★★★½ - Like a guided tour through good design frequently interupted by arena fights. Interesting combo-system and good storytelling keeps things from growing stale. I wonder what's coming from this studio.
  • Dear Ester [PC] (2012, The Chinese Room) - ★★★★ - Nostalgic is what I'd describe it as. It's all memories. The walking-and-narrator-talking genre is easy to mess up but Dear Esther proves it can be done really well.
  • Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons [PC] (2013, Starbreeze Studios) - ★★★ - Ni No Kuni did it better but Brothers is no slouch. It's a creative take on swedish fables. As a swede who knows a bit of our culture and tradition, this is one of the most faithful stories to our heritage.
  • BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea - Part 1 - ★★★ - It's more of Infinite's Disney-ride and I like it. I want to see where they're going because where they left off they're most likely performing an advanced and embarassing dance where stepping on your own toes is considered intellectual.

★ = Bad, ★★ = Okay, ★★★ = Good, ★★★★ = Very good, ★★★★★ = Brilliant
