$500 cans on, this is how you dream right - Official Headphone Thread

I'm in a similar situation. Got the iBeats from my wife for Christmas. I'm always grateful for new earphones and I actually think they sound great, but every other review I read online is basically "WORST PRODUCT EVER! STOPPED WORKING AFTER THREE DAYS!". I'm babying the things, but it's making me insanely paranoid. Almost want to preemptively return them before they do break :lol

Pretty sure iBeats are low-end turbines with a fresh new paint job, which is a good thing in terms of sound and durability.

Ah, okay. I'm a little ignorant when it comes to earphones so all I've had to go on is various consumer reviews that I should probably just stop worrying about, lol.

The best rule to go by with headphones is that if they sound good to you, dont worry about what others tell you. I have listened to several cans that got great reviews, but weren't what I liked.

I've been itching to purchase a decent pair of headphones and have my eyes on this set here:

Audio-Technica ATH-M30

Alternatively, I was keeping an eye on are these:

Sennheiser HD448

These were actually my number one choice but the price went up by like $20 from the last time I saw them and I no longer feel I'd be getting the best bag for my buck.

The top pair is $30 cheaper than the bottom pair right now. Unless the bottom pair is by far a nicer pair of cans, I'll go for the top pair.

Again, what do you guys think?
448s are just $60 on Newegg right now.

I really like the way the RE0 presents the bass. It's not in your face, but I wouldn't say it's weak. It makes you listen for it more, and when you do you really hear how clear and detailed it is. The eternas just kinda shit on your face with bass, these spoon feed you it and it's really a nice change of pace switching between the two. I might even go so far as to say that I thoroughly enjoy these more running off my laptop than my HD 650s running off my WA6. :lol

My sister needs some cheap over the ear headphones for some video editing class. They need to have a 6ft+ cord. I'm not spending over $30, but I don't know if I want to buy the Sennheiser HD202's for her. I'd buy something from the OP, but nothing is in my limited price range. Any ideas?

I do want her to actually use these, after her class, instead of the stock Apple buds.

You could also get a M-to-F audio cable on Monoprice for like $4. Hell, I have a dozen lying here.

If it's for shooting video, as I expect - at least that's when I used mine - that's fine.

Anything half-decent amp you buy is going to cost as much or more than a set of headphones that cheap.

It's a good investment for the next pair you buy, because you can only go up from the HD201.

I ended up ordering the Fiio E6 amp. Can't wait for it.

And by the half of the year I will be probably upgrading to a $100-$150 headphone, I hope it still gets usefull for a headphone on that price-range.

Yo Highres, do the TMA-1 have the subwoofer bass sound that I love and the M50 is lacking? Thinking of picking them up once they drop in price, or check out AIAIAIs newer lineup after reviews

how good is meelectronics with service?
lost one of the tips on my m9, rendering them unusable. they still work, just not gonna be comfortable to wear. think it's possible for them to send me some replacements? any more than that i may just consider getting a new set. mine have lasted over a year and a half, which is pretty commendable. but some dude told me his only lasted a month...

I doubt it...since they sell replacement tips. But if they do let me know! Mine are all oddly loose on my M21 and dont stay on the stems very well. Haven't bothered complaining though.

They sell tips. I bought a bunch for my cw31p's. It's a little unaffordable, but it works.

I currently have Sennheiser 280Pros and I want to upgrade. I am looking at the Audio Technica ATH-M50, Sennheiser 558s , and Sennheiser 598s (only if i could find a really good price). Any advice on these or other headphones you would recommend over them. My current use will be PS Vita, Music, Laptop, and maybe PC with a headphone amp down the road. I want over the ear open or closed, leaning towards closed.

EDIT: NM got a really good deal on the 598s, paid basically the same price as 558s so I jumped on it.

How hard is it to blow the drivers on headphones? I'm at 50% volume in VLC player with some flac files, and its pretty loud. But no distortion. Not that I would ever play this loud... just curious how hard I can push these TMA-1s to reach its point of distortion. I guess it's best I don't fuck with it. :p lol

They're open so people will be able to hear it at raised volume

I know that. I have an open pair of headphones right now that you can hear in the other room when I have them on. I was wondering if this pair is similar or if it's something that would be usable in an office.

Just received my AD700. So far so good. Although I ordered the Mixamp pro this morning and am thinking if maybe I should've gone for a cheaper amp model...

I'd ask someone who has spent more than 15 minutes with them, lol. From what I remember the bass quantity is a bit more than the M50's, but not quite as excessive as say the DT770 Pro 80s (amped) I used to own. I really really like the bass extension of the M-Audio Q40s when amped, but I found the treble extension to be lacking especially for a guy that listens to as much witch-house as myself.

Haven't bought my iem's yet, but ended up spontaneously buying a pair of M50s, a Fiio E6 & the L9 LOD today from Amazon for my commute.

They'll arrive tomorrow.

I never tried the M50's so I can't comment on the bass of the TMA-1 comparison.

I just know I'm in love with my TMA-1s. I've only used them for about an hour total today but I EQ'ed them to my liking. I'm curious to see (or hear) if I will receive even better sound after burn in. Some people said they noticed a difference, some didn't.

A lot of people are happy with the M50 bass and most on here called me crazy when I said that the bass was lacking, even after amped. Not sure if your bass standards are as high as mine =P

Have you heard the Beats? I loved the bass in those, but admittedly it overpowered the rest of the music. Something just below the Beats would be perfect for me.

edit: Why is HiRes banned?! tsk tsk tsk

Well, I think there's an issue with either my Fiio E9, my D3 or my SRH940s.. I'm getting some cutting out of the audio on the right channel intermittently.

In order to better troubleshoot the issue, I ordered a fiio E10 to replace the D3 as my DAC. If it still happens, I'll use the E10 by itself for a while since the 940s are pretty easy to drive.

It's a shame I had to order another piece of audio equipment to troubleshoot this issue ;)

Yeah I've used the beats. And I agree the bass just drowns out everything else. Its hard to say how you would like the tma's bass wise. They deliver just the right amount for me, while keeping clarity with mid's and hi's. I listen mostly to rap/hip hop/dub step/vocal/techno. The headphones sound very natural to me, but not flat. Nothing is really overpowering anything else. Although, The were kind of dark until I EQ'ed them for my music.

I'll have to give you a updated response on the bass in a day or two. Maybe a couple listens to blue berry yum yum would help lol. Though I'm pretty new to HQ audio, maybe someone else is better suited to answer.

You pretty much listen to everything I do. Hip hop/trance/vocal/house/techno/kpop. I love me some mids and his, but really need that solid bass thump rocking my ear drums. My M50s just about do the trick when amped, but I feel like it could be better. Thanks in advance for more impressions

After months of waiting I think I am going for the Beyerdynamic DT-880 (600 ohm). The Sennheiser HD 600/650 are too expensive where I live, the AKG 701 not suited for my taste and I can't really rate the Hifi-man HE-300.

Any suggestions for a decent yet affordable DAC/amp? Currently looking at the Yulong U100.

I got a Klipsch Image One for Christmas.
They sound quite good, but I'm finding the bass to be too loud. To the point that it sometimes distracts me from the music I'm hearing.
What would be the best choices to "deal" with it?
I mostly use the headphones with an iPhone. Is it worth it to try to equalize the sound? I tried with the stock presets, but I find the reduce too much the bass, affecting the sound quality.
Any equalizers worth a recommendation?
Or some other idea?

I'd just like the bass to be a bit lower and I'd be extremely pleased. :$

Newcomer to this topic, but would love some pointers (but I know that sound is different to each person)

So, after wasting my 4th pair of Koss Porta Pro last year, I'm up for change of brands. This time tho I am looking for something more premium, with hopes that it would last longer than 1-4 months). I was thinking about Sennheisers HD 558 (maybe even 598), so would love to hear recommendations and advices from GAF.

For something that sounds great and is durable as fuck, I would go with the AIAIAI TMA-1s.

Damn I paid $230 for TMAs only a couple weeks ago and the prices are falling all over the place.

The capitals are nice, but I really wish I knew about the TMA studios. FUCK, why couldn't they announce them earlier. :(

I'd love if AIAIAI sold the TMA studio circumaural pads separately, and that they'd be compatible with the original on ear TMA - would buy that. From that pic, the actual ear cup size looks same but the pads look huge.

Need a little help from Headphone-GAF.

I have a 360/PS3. Lots of late night gaming sessions. Things tend to get a little loud. My Skyrim shouts bring either a child or the wife out to ask me to turn it down.

So I'm researching headsets. Requirements:

- gotta be wireless. I'm a good 10-12 feet from the TV, so I don't feel like fucking with wires.
- budget max is $150, but would prefer to keep it around $100
- would prefer something that would work with both the 360 and the PS3, but 360 is the priority (that's where all my multiplayer gaming happens)

I'm 75% of the way to pulling the trigger on Ear Force X41s on Amazon ($140). Should I go for them or is there a better solution? Also, I have the Slim, so do I need anything else to setup the X41s if that's the best solution?

Still looking for a little help here. I think I've bagged the wireless issue because of the repeated reviews indicating that the wireless signal interferes with the wifi in the house and causes popping.

So, still hoping for headphones (w mic) for gaming. Under $100 preferably. Wired is fine, but I need a long cord. PS3/360 is preferable but 360 is the priority.

The EarForce X12's seem to fit the bill or maybe the PX21's (which I think are PS3/360 compatible). I hate the thought of having to crawl behind my components to switch out though. Hmm...

Does anyone have a recommendation? Thanks!

Put off the purchase for a month and save some money to increase your budget. The 5.8 wireless mixamp from Astro is a great option and will pair very well with all headsets and headphones. The wired mixamp is great as well and a bit cheaper. They both have digital optical inputs. I have both and use the wireless one in the living room...had zero problems with signal interference.

As for headsets, I'd recommend the Sennheiser PC-350 (closed) or PC-360 (open). I much prefer the sound of the PC-360 and find it comparable to the Sennheiser 595 but it is the more expensive option. Alternatively, you could get any decent dedicated headphone and clip on mic.

Of course, the mixamp plus headset will put you well above your budget but I really think it is worth the money, especially if voice chat is essential to you and you want cross platform compatibility

I have the mixamp + AD700 for my PS3/360 sessions, bought them just recently (still waiting on amp) as a newcomer to headphones. I've read about mods you can do for the AD700 to get a mic on them, not sure if you're into that tho. Cable is long enough as well (bit too long for my room)
