It's not really advancement in headphone technology as much as china brute forcing cheap manufacturing. :p

Yeah it's not just headphones either, China also makes some decent smartphone knock-offs

What is everyone's personal preference between Open or Closed Headphones?

I've recently started reading up more on all of these things and my HD-280 Pro's are Closed, but reading reviews on some good Open ones say they sound better than Closed because of less distortion or something, at the expense of everyone being able to hear what you're listening to.

Since I may be in the market for another pair, I should decide between these 2 factors first. I don't need to worry about people hearing what I listen to since my earphones are for out of the house and headphones for my room/gaming. So if Open sound "better" that would be a good trade-off.

It really depends. Mag Dogs, LFF Paradox, Denon D5000, and KEF M500 are a few examples of closed headphones that sound open in some ways. Closed headphones usually sport better bass impact and a more intimate soundstage, while open headphones usually sport wider soundstage, better instrument separation, and the least amount of coloration...But there are so many exceptions to this basic outlook that maybe it's not even worth noting.

Be warned Open headphones can be heard by all.
I'd say people can hear what you are hearing at a 25 foot radius.

It's like playing music loud & not putting the headphones on, you can still hear it from far away.
That is how Open headphones are even with you wearing them.

You definitely don't want them if you watch porn with an open window nearby with them.

If you are in a room with the door closed no one can hear what's coming from your headphones, not even if you share a wall with someone in an adjacent room, so unless you're watching porn with someone in the same room with you it's not a problem...Oh and there's no way that someone can hear outside of your window unless you're sticking your head outside of the window lol.

Open headphones are sublime, but very loud - like hear them in the next room if your door is open loud - so keep that in mind.

I much prefer the clarity offered by open designs, but I live alone and don't need to worry about noise pollution.

It would only really be an issue for porn I imagine, but that's what a volume slider is for, right? :)

Looking at picking up a decent pair of headphones for my daughters birthday, which is at the start of next year. I've set a budget of £100 to £150, and I notice the Sennheiser HD 598 fit in that bracket nicely.

Does anyone know if they'll be suitable for a petite 12 year old in terms of fit? As far as usage, it'll mostly be iPod/iPhone but she wants a nice set. :)

She name dropped Sony specifically, but I'm willing to override for the sake of quality. (I'll find out why she mentioned Sony)

Really thinking of getting the Audio Technica ATH M-50's.

One question on it. I've been looking at reviews and couldn't get a solid answer. I listen to a lot of bass heavy music and I love me some bass. Is the bass in these headphones good? And are they over the ear?

The bass is pretty good...Not super bass heavy, and yes they are over the ear.

Hey, CanGAF. My Shure SE215s died this morning, after around 27 months of faithful use. It happened when I detached the cable from the earpiece to clean the corrosion buildup (causing them to occasionally cut out), and snapped off one of the connection terminals. Now I get no sound from that side at all instead of it randomly cutting out due to the corrosion. But I digress.

I've been looking for some replacements today, and I've really liked using IEMs for the past couple of years. If I don't buy the same SE215s are replacements, I'm leaning towards the Hifiman RE-400s or Etymotic HF5s. Does CanGAF have any opinions on these?

To throw a fly in the ointment, somewhere locally is selling their last stock of Sennheiser Amperiors for about $150 less than anywhere else (RE-400s $110, HF5s $170, Amperior $220), so I'm tossing up between continuing with IEMs or going to on-ear cans. It seems like the overall sound, besides isolation is pretty great for the price. I know the prices aren't really close on these, are the HF5s worth $60 more than the RE-400s?

Of utmost importance to me is isolation, as I use them at work in an open plan office and use them to reduce distractions. I also occasionally travel with them and exercise on. Can CanGAF talk me down from buying the Amperiors? Should I even be bothering with them if isolation and occasional travel/exercise (running) is important?

Oh, I primarily listen either on my phone or office laptop. Usually higher bitrate mp3s or FLACs.

Sennheiser Amperiors are going for $199 on Amazon...They've dropped in price because they are being discontinued, as Sennheiser are prepping to release the upgraded version of the HD25s...The RE-400 sound amazing, but build quality seems to be a bit suspect...And because of this I've been recommending spending the extra $20 and getting the V-Sonic VC1000 instead.

That's about the price I've seen, but I'm in Australia so the prices are going to be a bit higher because of Australia tax. And Sennheisers on Amazon won't be shipped to Australia. I do know the Amperiors are being discontinued and don't see that as a problem since most replacement parts should work with the HD25s I'd think.

Do you know what the noise isolation on them is like? The $200 mark is pretty much my upper limit on what I want to spend. I'm leaning towards the RE-400s right now, and not specifically because of the price. I know trying to choose between IEMs and on-ears is a bit weird, but if I get better sound and as good isolation in the Amperiors then I'll grab them.

Edit: Oops, missed your Vsonic recommendation. I'll look into those too, thanks.

If it's similar to the HD-25 then they isolate quite well.

Headphone GAF. I've got a pair of HD598's for the house but I'm looking for something to travel with. I've been spending a lot of time in airports and on long flights lately. Something that blocks out surrounding noise is a plus. I'll mostly use it for listening to music on ZuneHD and in flight movies. I'm looking around the $100-$300 range and bonus points if it is sold on Amazon. Thanks!

How do you feel about in-ear monitors?

If you prefer full-sized phones (there's also a coiled cable version):

Which are also on sale from buydig for $100, but they're not an authorized dealer, so the warranty may be forfeit. http://slickdeals.net/f/6373208-aud...-with-a-straight-cable-95-with-free-shipping?

I've been using Sennheiser CX300-B's since 2009 with no problems so the in ear monitors would probably work. I'll check both of these out. Thanks.

How are the on ears for comfort during extended wear and for blocking background noise?

If you have big ears then they won't be comfortable for long listening sessions but they isolate well and offer the very best sound I believe for any headphone under $200...However if you're looking for something a bit more comfortable the Senneheiser Amperior is also around the same price and will provide isolation nearly as good while remaining light and portable.

Can't find reviews yet from this.
SONY MDR-HW700DS (Japan only)
138244791861756717227_watermarked-DSC07706.jpg

And pretty expensive to import.

Surround sound headphones are mostly a an overly expensive gimmick anyway, don't buy into the hype and don't pay $750 for headphones based around their name unless that name starts with AKG, Beyerdynamic, Hifiman, Stax, Grado, or Sennheiser.

Per this thread about 2.5 years ago, I purchased a set of JVC HA-RX700 headphones. Amazing purchase, loved them, however recently after a traumatic fall, one of the ear pieces is now permanently disconnected.

http://imgur.com/gtEf4r4

I need some new headphones. Another pair of the RX700s are $40 on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013OWPV4/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Am I going to find a better set of headphones for the same price? Any other suggestions of similar price, similar build (large) and sound quality?

If you're okay with semi-open headphones the SR850 are also excellent headphones that edge out the JVC's in sound quality.

Panasonic HTF600 are quite similar to the JVC's and maybe sport even better bass response.

Pioneer SE-A1000 are open headphones, but they don't leak as bad as others if you want to consider them.

Looking for budget headphones around the £20 price range with long cord length (about 2-3m) and I'll be using it on TV for gaming and films, laptop, pc and phone for music.

Found these so far along with some recommend in OP, which would you guys recommend? The cheaper the better as long as they do the job well.

Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ Style

Superlux HD661

Superlux HD668B

Superlux HD681

SAMSON SR850

Sennheiser HD201 , these seem to one the of the most popular ones on amazon, and it's exactly y ideal price point for me but it's not recommend in OP.

Sony MDRZX100B

Chimp CS 800 ,Uncommon brand but I can get for £20 ( discount of £50 apparently) though I can't find info on cord length.

To be honest I'm on the fence on buying them on not as I'm happy with my current budget earphones which do the job but they're not long enough for me so I can just buy a cheap extender instead of spending much more on one of these new sets. What to do...

Edit: Needed to go cheaper so found some cheaper ones I would prefer unless they're drastically worse compared to the the other ones I posted

Sony MDR-V150

Panasonic RP-HT225E-K

Sony MDRMA300.AE

JVC RX300

Sony MDR ZX300

Buy the Panasonic I recommended above or if you have the money to spring from the Samson SR850 get those.

For some reason the panasonic's are pretty expensive for me in the UK (£47 about $75) compared to the US listed amazon price. The samson's look good if a little above my price range too but thanks anyway for the rec.

I would recommend the JVC HAS400 over the Senn HD201 if portability is something desired.

Edit: JVC HAS400

201's seem to have the cord lenght I need whereas the JCV's have a short one and I'll be using them at home mostly.

Hello Headphone GAF!

In the next few months I'm planning on getting some new headphones. I should probably be able to get some around Christmas. I'm looking to get one that is under $100, and I'm wondering what would be the best option. I prefer over the ear headphones, since I don't like on ear headphones at all. I've been looking at the JVC HA-S500-B headphones on Amazon, but I'm unsure if I want to get those since you can only get them from Japan and I don't know anything about the whole customs stuff since I've never imported anything. If they are the best headphones one could get for under $100, then I would like to know if anyone else here has had experience getting them from Amazon. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I currently have JVC HARX500 headphones, so anything better than those would be nice. Thanks!

Soundwise The JVC's are definitely in the top five headphones under $100, but coming from the HARX500 you might find them to be a bit uncomfortable. I also really like the way the Creative Aurvana Live sound, and find them to be a bit more comfortable for longer periods of time.

Thanks for the response.

The Creative headphones have some good qualities! Plus, they don't have to be imported on Amazon. That's very tempting. Hearing that the JVC headphones are in the top five when it comes to headphones under $100 is something I like to hear. I definitely want the best sound that I can get for the money. I know for under $100 I'm not going to get the best sounding headphones out there, but I surely want the best out of the options that are available in the price range. I'm going to compare and contrast both headphones until the day I make a purchase. I definitely want to make the right choice. So, yeah, thanks again, and I really appreciate your help.

Edit: I just realized the JVC HA-S500-B headphones are on ear headphones, which would explain why they aren't comfortable. I thought they looked like over the ear headphones, but apparently pictures on the internet are deceiving. Definitely not getting those JVC headphones now, and I have my eyes focused purely on the Creative headphones.

I bought a Sennheiser HD 439 after a long time winging it with in-ears.

I wasn't even expecting the headphones to fit so well, seeing as I had a horrible experience with my first set of over-ears that I shall not mention here, and "Extended Bass Response" did make me worry about overkill bass. Put all of them together with the fact that I'm buying blind...

Turns out my fears were unfounded. It's funny how these over-the-ear cans cradle my head so well and the cups fit right there perfectly, and I don't even feel there's something heavy on my head. The bass is pretty nice, but not muddy or exaggerated to my tastes, and having mids and highs being clear and nice is a significantly upgrade from in-ears that I've been using for the last 7-8 months (two of them).

It's actually a bit funny when I went back to some of the older songs in my collection that I'm pretty sure I've listened a thousand times at least and hearing new things simply because it does better separation of... things in general.

Being able to get them "centred" and sealed easily is a very big plus, though. I'll be keeping my in-ears, though, for outdoors use. Last thing I probably want to do outdoors is to break them...

Need an opinion for good headphones in the 200-400$ range.
My only reference is the pulse elite from sony, I love the wireless part and the convenience but I hate how they feel on my skull after an hour which makes them unbearable so I'm looking at some serious wired alternative now that I can afford it. I'm thinking about those:
Sony MDR-X10
Sennheiser HD 598
Beyerdynamic DT 990
I know the sound quality will be above the pulse elite which I'm satisfied with so my only criteria is comfort for long use. Anybody had experience with those?

The 598's a good choice.

If you go DT990, you need to make sure that you get the right impedance. Beyerdynamic makes it in 32 ohm (easily driven by a portable / computer) and 250 or 600 ohm versions which will require some kind of dedicated amplification to reach a reasonable level of dynamic range without crazy volume.

The DT990's comfier than the 598, though very large and warm in summer months.

I guess it's because of the extra clamping force on the Pros compared to the other versions but I kind of find my DT990 Pros uncomfortable. After around 30 minutes the headband (or whatever it's called) starts digging into my head and it gets sore. With my HD558s (same shape as the 598s) I can wear them for the whole day without getting sore. My DT880s are really comfortable though so I'm guessing that's what the non Pro DT990s feel like too.
