Everyone from their mid 30's and under (and possibly even older) grew up with the Genesis and SNES. It's in our gaming genetic makeup to console war.

Here in Finland it was Amiga 500 vs. Atari ST in the 16-bit era. Much similar BS about downplaying or overplaying technical differences was found in the gaming magazines back in the day.

Shit used to be light-hearted and revolve around games. Now you've got people cheering for people to lose their jobs and for shit to disappear as if it wasn't enough that they get to buy what they enjoy, they also need other people not to be able to.

People rage on with console wars because they have nothing else better to do with their time. There is no time for fanboyism when you're working, parenting, fucking, and actually enjoying the games you bought.

Adults don't do console wars. People who do aren't adults.

There's a lot of room between being an all-out console warrior and being completely platform agnostic. I don't see any point in getting emotionally involved, but there were plenty of good reasons for me to try to anticipate who would fare better this time around. My career is in technology so it's always helpful to try to hone my instincts for superior design and marketing. It's quite simply directly applicable to my day-to-day job.
I also agree that I want to see the hobby I enjoy so much continue to thrive, so I tend to react badly when companies with a lot of influence treat it as nothing more than a money-making venture. There will be those who say "that's the only reason companies do anything" but that's a dramatic oversimplification. In many cases the most successful companies are those with a genuine passion for their business. Understanding and empathizing with your customer creates opportunities to pleasantly surprise them. Looking for ways to squeeze more money out of them just because you can is only successful in the short term.

Reading that back through, I didn't make my meaning clear enough, and I do apologise for that.
What I mean is anyone who should be old enough to have more important things going on in their lives - who then falls into a blind anger about Ghosts being 720p on Xbox One, micro transactions being in Dead Space 3, number crunching the frame rate on Tomb Raider etc etc, needs to get a grip.
"It's disgusting that Microsoft see's fit to release a console that only does this for this much" and sentences in the same vein are ridiculous.
Don't like it? Don't buy it.
Microsoft's previous DRM attempts too much for you? Then don't buy the Xbox One.
Getting bored of the annual Call of Duty? Don't buy it.
Don't go out of your way to criticise, attack and mock anyone else because they purchased something that you don't consider worth 'your' money.
The art of saying "It's not my kind of thing" and letting someone else enjoy what they bought are long gone.
Of course you're free to make your own decisions on the things you purchase. That doesn't mean you take the piss out of someone who spent their own money on something else. People who spend their time doing that need a slap.

I own both a PS3 and X360, and despite that I like them a lot, neither of them are perfect.
I don't console war, but I AM glad it happens, only because I feel without it, companies may be less willing to compete with each other. Competition is healthy for what we are into, and I know it can be annoying seeing fanboys cling to a company, but I want to say it helps the rest of us non-fanboys out in the long run, helping to keep our options open and plentiful.

I think you explained it nicely.
Lumping everyone into the category of fanboys battling the consoles wars like kids on a playground is not fair. I've seen some gaming journalists do this on the web when they speak of the internet gaming community while complaining. Some even like to cherry pick comments to back up their point and paint us all with the same broad brush.
I've argued that the lack of rumble wasn't a big deal given that it's something I rarely ever notice, though I wasn't here at the time. Not that this didn't stop me from getting a DualShock for sale though, and by the time I got my own PS3 it was included with them anyway.
Multiplats though, hypothetically I might defend why if it made sense... but would stick with the superior version because why the hell bother with the crappy version? That's territory more akin to justifying why the XB1 runs worse, system limitations are what they are but that means I won't bother with their versions.
I don't see why kids are limited to only have so much money.
I try to wrap my brain around the hatred of a company or following it without question. But I just can't anymore. If anything I'd simply be stating my opinion on why something is good vs. why something is bad.
It's the generalization that some people make. My friend was a huge Sony fanboy in high school and hated Nintendo. We used to have arguments over why he thought Nintendo sucked. He's actually in more recent years calmed down a lot and gave Nintendo a try- though I think he still prefers Sony/MS like many do.

I agree. I mean, it's not like the SNES vs SGen days, where it was obvious that SNES ran Mortal Kombat better, minus the blood. Back then, I didn't look at it as "SNES is better than SGen!", it was more like SGen have the sport games, SNES have the action adventure, platformer, action and RPG games. I know SGen had good RPGs too, but SNES...
Anyway, now-a-days it's really getting out of hand. I rather buy what I "prefer" than to buy something I'd regret later or buy later. I always been a Nintendo/Sony man so, I will always stick to my guns.
Why do adults console war? Immaturity is the answer. It's that simple. There is honestly no way to defend adults that argue on the internet with complete strangers about videogame consoles and games. The same would apply to any other thing also like sports, TV shows, movies, etc. If you've got time to sit on the internet as an adult and "console war" you've got much better things you should be doing with your life. If you come to a forum to discuss a hobby you like such as videogames and engage in adult conversation, now that is a much different scenario.

I'd imagine some adults do it to remind them of their gaming youth, and all the playground trash talk xD It's pretty harmless. You better believe I'd hop on that Sega wagon if a console megaton ever happened xD But it won't, and I won't, and that's fine. I'll continue to play on PC / Nintendo / Playstation / Android and enjoy what each have to offer. Not that I'd give them up even if the megaton happened. But nostalgia is a strong force, and sometimes it's nice to root for things

I don't "go to war" against any console as much as I call out bullshit when I see it. For the past couple of generations I've owned every single console, and recently have started picking up some retro stuff to fill out my collection. I want all the video games.
And I still don't know if I will ever own an Xbox One.

I'm cool with all the platform holders; Sony is my favorite, but i also love Ninty and Pc gaming. But i f. ..g despise ms and xbox. And it has nothing to do with brand loyalty or not being able to afford all the systems. I also hate people who say: "You are a fanboy, because you cannot afford other systems ""; fucking idiots. Sorry for my language guys, just had to get it out of my chest.
Clarification appreciated, I can totally dig it. The sort of micro-rationalization I think we both cringe at seeing gives a sense of desperation in the people who get so involved in it. I've seen people pull out the all-caps because of a 3 fps difference between two versions of a game, and it hurts to see.
Is this one of those pot and kettle things.

When I was a kid, it was because I sought a justification for only owning certain systems (primarily a Genesis, and a NES I mothballed when I got the Genesis) and it bothered me if people talked uninformed trash about it. Now that I buy 'em all at some point down the line, I don't really care, and only troll boards with console war stuff to watch the salt boil over.

Just because someone has the money to purchase both systems doesn't mean they will. I for one have never been able to justify having two systems for myself; one will just sit there collecting dust while I play the other 99% of the time.
That's why I went Wii U only. Come at me.

It's more opinion than anything. I don't own any of this gens consoles however I do believe in most cases it is fear that the opposing sides console might threaten the existence of your console of choice. The fear is of course irrational. A personal experience of course brings up the Microsoft DRM issue. This actually concerned me as I do not always have internet access and or I have multiple machines. I was concerned that the DRM would be passed on to other devices and would become a mainstream idea. I am primarily a PC player and it kinda freaked me out like the Diablo 3 and Sim City incident. Again this is a personal opinion.

Also, I don't get the sports analogy. In sports there are winners and losers, there shouldn't be in gaming. No "gamer" should want a gaming company to fail. Fair enough they have preferences and don't like a company for whatever reason, but it starts getting childish when they force those opinions and preferences on other people and tell them that what they like is wrong.

Although the fear is sometimes real in the sense of your favorite 3rd party franchise hopping to another platform, like REmake back in the day. It still stings.
This actually is a good question I think. As much as I want PS4 (and as a pipedream Wii U) to beat the XB1 up until Microsoft fully rebounds, there's no good damn reason to tell someone not to get it if they know what they're in for and they want the games that are on that system. Hell, throw tons of money my way and I might well go "eh sure why not" at least once a bundle I want enough is out (not Titanfall; that big pile of cash can ALSO go towards a computer setup to run that at 1080p+/120FPS.) To want it to not succeed basically hinges on the idea many people agree with me, and if they don't they don't, it's not even remotely like disagreeing on climate change or something.

Its fun. But there are a few reasons. Probably the most relevant is that it comes down to passion and difference of opinion.
