adults, why do you 'console war'?

The Xbox One is behind because of a myriad of reasons, the price being the most obvious of all. There a lot of people non enthusiasts that were aware of the anti-consumer plans, some of those weren't even aware Microsoft went backwards on those plans.
But that's besides the point. Regardless if many or few people actually still care if they're being/were being ripped off, doesn't make the discussion and preoccupation around it any less valid. People expecting failure and mediocrity NOT to be rewarded and not to be an example have all the right to hope the company is punished by the market (even if it will probably won't be).

Calling people/companies/organizations for their bullshit should never, ever be compared to fanboyism.

Came here to post something similar to this. This is the only form of "console war" I currently engage in, although am rarely vocal about it. I will support Microsoft when I feel they are delivering a product I think is worth it for me.

It's no secret that I prefer Sony stuff, but if someone asked me what console they should buy I never bullshit them. I ask them what games they like and what they want from their console, if they like Microsoft franchises then I tell them to get an Xbox. If someone says they want a Playstation I ask why, and if their reasons are a bit light on I don't push them into it, since I'd feel extremely guilty if they forked out hundreds of dollars for something they didn't end up enjoying.

As far as how the media portrays the console wars, all I want is for the bullshit to be cut. As an early PS3 adopter I know what it's like to be on the 'losing' side of the fence, but a lot of the early criticisms were justified. It would be nice if fans of both consoles could just accept the respective shortcomings of their system rather than spread disingenuous bullshit. Not that everyone does that of course.

One thing that bugs me are people going into threads about games they don't like. Filling threads up constantly telling everyone why they don't like said games.

That and the childish hate of system wars changed my view of these forums.

Both have gotten worse for sure. Everything isn't for everyone.

My only explanation for system wars is some can't get every system. Devalue or insult what you can't afford. Maybe just people wanting to feel like they are part of winning team?

Actually there's probably a lot of cases where a company has fallen out of favor for one reason or another. Microsoft's probably the biggest example recently, many of those who are the hardest on XB1 were likely also hard on Sony when the PS3 launched and were more favorable to some extent of the 360 at least until recently. Microsoft definitely wore me down over the years until they just blew it all up with the XB1 reveal anyway, at this point they have a lot of ground to cover and I probably won't be as positive about them as I was during the initial 360 years, and even during the Xbox years they weren't my FAVORITE platform but I liked it enough.

"It's disgusting that Microsoft see's fit to release a console that only does this for this much" and sentences in the same vein are ridiculous.
Don't like it? Don't buy it.
Microsoft's previous DRM attempts too much for you? Then don't buy the Xbox One.
Getting bored of the annual Call of Duty? Don't buy it.
Don't go out of your way to criticise, attack and mock anyone else because they purchased something that you don't consider worth 'your' money.
The art of saying "It's not my kind of thing" and letting someone else enjoy what they bought are long gone.

This is pretty much the motivating factor behind most of my posts on GAF. I'd been lurking the site for years never really posting at all, but it's just recently that I've felt that people's disproval of the Xbox One has actually gotten to the point where it's difficult to simply read threads that would interest me.

I don't think people should be seen as console warriors simply because they have a preference for one machine over the others (this is basically guaranteed to happen for everyone), but when people are going out of their way to derail topics for games/consoles that they have zero interest in then I feel it harms this forum as a whole. I don't like Zelda games, as a result you'll probably never see me posting in a Zelda topic, unless a new entry peaks my interest somehow. Meanwhile however it's absolutely impossible to read through say a Titanfall thread, regardless if the topic was playercount, mapcount, graphics information, beta information etc... without the topic immediately being shifted to "manufactured hype", "COD with mechs", "they must be holding back for Titanfall 2" etc, every... single... time. It means that regardless of what the topic was initially about, we end up with essentially the same thread each time. The fact that it's so often the same posters chiming in to say why they still don't care for it makes no sense to me. Why can't you simply post in the topics of products you do actually want to play?

EDIT: Actually, there's currently a Titanfall thread going on where this hasn't yet happened. Maybe we've turned a corner.

Can see that line of thought. Personally I like all the console makers except Nintendo. After N64 they lost me.

Similar to Wii U users hyping up a mediocre Lego title because it's exclusive amirite?

I kid I kid, everyone's got their bias but some people just hide it a little better than others ;)

The Lego game definitely got more attention than it otherwise would have, or more than Lego games generally do. I have no idea whether it was deserved or not though.

I think it's a mix of tribal identity and a lack of individual personal qualities that allow for a lot of room for the tribal identity to fill. Pretty much like how some (not all) religious people and atheists become their belief, and every moment of their life is spent rambling on about how they're so damn correct.

It was fully deserved. Undercover was great, we need a sequel across more platforms so more people can experience its greatness.

I own both the PS4 and Xbox One. I'm skipping Wii U because I'm not into the Nintendo mascots anymore, so I don't feel like I'm missing too much. I wish I had the space and money for a beastly PC, though.

Other than PC, I don't really care nor follow console wars. It's about the games, it always has been.

I only 'console war' against fanboys. I cannot stand that. I am an adult, I own everything except for a vita and I honestly probably bought an Xbone due to all the ridiculous hate.

We may look like adults, OP, but what makes you think we matured since the times when we were snotty-nosed little brats. :D

I don't think I'd give my money to any business because of plonkers on the internet.

I don't disagree.

I was a console warrior from elementary up until the end of high school, which was about 2 years before the Wii hit. After that I just didn't care enough to put energy into trying to convince people why my way was "the right way" hahaha.

I remember just before the 360 hit with a little ways to go for the PS3 and Wii one of my co-workers asked what video game system I was interested in out of the 360 and PS3. I said "you know I like Nintendo right? But if I had to choose I suppose PS3." Then he went on this long rant about how that was the wrong choice and so one and so forth and oh god! Dude your almost 30! Why are you so personally invested in Microsoft? Are you trying to convince me or yourself? Can I just play Pokemon Emerald in piece?!

It's less of a console war and more people arguing about their opinions at this level. Owning all doesn't mean you're free of preference, and people argue about their preferences all the time, in everything.

Done by the third post. The call of console war is too easy and is bandied about anytime someone disagrees with someone else.

I want everything centered on the video game enthusiast to do well.

With that said, I have philosophical issues with the Xbox One that prevent me from purchasing one.

I also have issues with EA, but I'm fickle, and the Titanfall beta was too good.

There's nothing more annoying than when someone tries to blanket and issue that is not exclusive to gamers.

As others has said, gamers can have constructive conversations even if they "console war" just a little bit. It's harmless and all about preference.

This question should be ask to sports fan who dig deep into the pits of anger that can lead up to cities burning, people dying and personal insults.

Or even some tech junkies that can't accept if their favorite phone/tablet/service isn't everyone's favorite and doesn't review right etc etc.

Gamers console wars because it's fun. That it. Money could be a factor, malicious intent could be a factor, wanting to change people's mind, I mean there's endless reasons but the bottom line is its fun.

People who are always salty that someone has to point out there disapproval of a game just because they themselves like it and would rather people who don't like it to stay out, really need stop. Sure, It's not fun reading through threads if people are going to say the same thing over and over again. But guess what? It's a forum. Deal with it. People have opinions and regardless of how negative it is, it doesn't mean they don't get to have a say just because it isn't positive. I know I say some contradictory stuff myself but in the end, the message is play games and enjoy them. Gaming is one of the coolest hobbies around and if we didn't have this, "consoles wars", it would just be empty and boring.

Because Sega does what Nintendon't.

My favorite console war comment from my favorite console war.

I don't war, but I am a spectator. It's fun to watch people who are passionate about something, anything, discuss and argue about what they like and why what they like is subjectively or objectively better. And forum meltdowns are unfortuantely worth sticking around for 100+ pages (Bayonetta 2 on WiiU was glorious).

I'd hope that most people online would console war (it's a verb now?) in jest and in the end, they just go where the games they like are. I know not everyone will, but in warring, I hope we're respected as gamers and consumers by the makers as well, and that various/viable options remain to us.

Listening to old 1up podcasts, and it seems like the argument for console wars is because kids can only afford one console and gotta feel defensive about their purchase?

I know gaf audience is mostly of the older crowd who has jobs who probably can afford all the consoles and maybe even a pc too (layoff italian meals), so what motivates you to war? exclusives? suckered into marketing? bored at work and need to vent on something?

I mean sony and ms are about the same 'evil', one just has a better marketing strategy today. this can easily change.

I don't think your going to get a real answer from people that are actually apart of the console war. I don't get it either. While I do prefer PS, I did play my 360 more. I've never felt the need to make people feel bad about their purchase choices.

It is no secret I prefer MS systems over the others. What I try to get across though is that I am a gamer, first and foremost. There hasn't been a system in 2 gens that I haven't owned(didn't buy a GameCube). I enjoyed the hell of the The Show and TLoU last gen and look forward to great games again from my PS4 purchase this time around.

To me, it is about games..nothing else.

Absolutely untrue. Sony does indulge in wickedness (it is a large multinational corporation, after all), but everything out of Redmond was foul from Gates through Ballmer. I have faith in Stephen that he'll continue this fine tradition.

NB: Above post has no bearing on current-gen vis-a-vis libraries or hardware capabilities etc, as I am a post-home-console owner.

Yeah people why do you have to prefer something.

Owning 3 consoles doesn't mean you're more mature than others with 1 or 2 or more (counting PC, handhelds, etc.).

You can make posts to justify your preferences. On the other hand, you can make posts insinuating that people you don't agree with are children. Let's be honest. That isn't fan-specific behavior.

I like Sony consoles, but I will recommend WiiUs and PCs any day of the week....and also dropping $1000 for just consoles alone is not something most people would do even adults..... also whats wrong with having preference as a consumer?

Done by the third post. The call of console war is too easy and is bandied about anytime someone disagrees with someone else.

I disagree. There are blatant instances of console fanboyism. They're generally not as blatant here when compared to other communities but they definitely exist

I generally do not disparage other consoles because frankly, in my almost 30 years of gaming, I have owned something from Nintendo, Sega, and Sony. I do defend Nintendo these days because of the ridiculous hate it is getting from people here. Like I said in another post, to me, Nintendo is the last bastion of traditional gaming and it irks me when people play the tech-specs card when, in video games, all that matters is, shockingly, whether a game has great gameplay or not. And what is strange is that, until the 3DS, I have never bought a Nintendo product for myself after the Famicom/NES.

And for those who say "gameplay and great tech are not mutually exclusive", yes, they aren't. But Nintendo chose not to do that because of their own reasons (money, ineptitude, whatever). Why the hell would you waste your time going on what if's instead of just playing the awesome game that is there right now?

I also hate passive-aggressive trolls who drive by threads just to put down the system. If you can't say anything good about a console, then just shut the fuck up and go read another post. If I can do it, why the hell can't others?

Having a preference is one thing. Going into threads trying to justify your purchases and belittling others for theirs is another. It's like your some sort of marketer rather than a gamer.
You like Xbox one, good for you. You don't like NIntendo games? Good for you. You have my attention when you put forth valid criticisms whether i agree with them or not but i'm not going to waste my time with someone arguing for the sake of it however.

There are certain sports fans in which you can have a discussion with, ones that would actually consider your points and certain ones you can't.
It's like talking to someone who just talks but doesn't listen to what you have to say.

In a partially ideal world, everyone has three consoles and every dev develops for all consoles. But we can't expect that. People will often have to choose. When you and your friends go into a console cycle, which console do you buy? When your company picks a console to dev for, which console do you pick?

People argue for fun and argue to justify their purchases, but the reason people argue is because decisions have to be made.

The way I look at it is, the only person you should be justifying a purchase to is yourself, who gives a crap what strangers buy?

I get the "fun" aspect of console wars but to me it's boring now, one person unwilling to accept criticism whilst attacking the competition versus the other person doing the same thing. The ones taking it to heart have a severe lack of perspective of life.

People argue over tv remotes for crying out loud. People argue about all sorts of shit gaming is no different.

The current console war I think has more to it though and for many including myself stems from the terrible initial plans for the Xbone, the patronizing tone of the people that defended it, PRISM scandal there is a lot of meat on the bone for people to chew on in regards to negative Xbone content.

While a lot of console warring is just horrible logic, it doesn't have to be. And as for what strangers buy, it can matter. Maybe not in internet discussions, but the console wars in studios and among circles of friends determine what platform everyone agrees on.

Having an argument is not the same thing as having a war. I was at the frontlines during the Spectrum Vs C64 wars and the quibbles people are having today are mere echoes of that great battle.

/holds up lighter

Because the corporations want people to console war.. its free word of mouth and brings in the $$$.

Me however I just sit on the outskirts with my PC and laugh.

There are various reasons to think that a particular product is better than another one in the same category: companies that make products for consumers to buy don't necessarily make exactly the same product with exactly the same feats, actually they usually make very different products and this means that one of them can be the best option for a particular person with certain kinds of preferences.

Post-purchase bias is a factor to to consider, but in a serious discussion it's always about validity of hypotheses and strength of arguments, and not about who said what and why.

Actually I think that if a person can afford two buy all the possible gaming systems (not every adult can, BTW) that person would probably be an excellent participant in a discussion about consoles.

The best console war will always be Mega Drive vs Super Nintendo.

That was a bruising and bloody war of attrition... so many casualties, yet so rewarding.
This was the WWII of console wars.

X1 vs PS4 is more of a Kardashian slap fight, a skirmish of sorts that keeps bringing up arbitrary bollocks... ignoring actual games and comparing cup sizes.
This is the War Against Terror of console wars.

I don't like the things Microsoft has done in the lead up to the XBOne and I don't like guys like Penello coming on here telling flat out lies about their console. So yeah I'm going to call out bullshit where I see bullshit. MS showed just how willing they are to screw gamers over if they can get away with it.

Yeah I own all the current gen consoles since I don't want to miss out on good exclusives, and MS keeps doing things that make me regret buying their console such as the very quick "price drop" for lack of a better term, and making their games almost like Free To Play games with the level of IAP.
