adults, why do you 'console war'?

I never understood console wars.

If I'm interested in enough exclusives games, i buy the console no matter what technical limitation or other features it has. Buying 2-3 Console every 6-7 years is not really a big amoung of money in comparison what other people are spending on smartphones every 1-2 years

Console warriors are like any other fanatics. People go crazy over teams, tv shows, food etc.

this^^^, people can be obsessive about anything that has two or several sides. i don't why people find the console wars strange, its in the human nature lol and to be honest there no such thing as "i love them all equally", a human being will always have a bias or a preference towards one side no matter how small it is.

Well it's being compared here to sports over and over again. But is it really so similar? You watch sport BECAUSE of the competition. If you like both teams the same it just isn't as fun.

Liking Halo and Uncharted equally and playing both of them though greatly increases your fun.

I can get preference, but I can not get wanting one or the other to fail. I own a ps4, xbone and a capable pc and am rooting for nintendo to finally give me a wiiu zelda, so I can also justify that purchase.

And another thing I can't understand is being able to pass on some good games as an enthusiast because of allegiance. If you are a playstation fan you cannot seriously deny the appeal of all of the ms exclusives, can you? Exactly the same case vice versa. And if you are able to afford it, 5 really good exclusive games(both will have way more within the next 2 years imo) is more than enough to justify a console purchase. For me at least...

It's fun, and some people's reactions are the best.

When it get angry PMs from people with words including "$0ny PauperStation," "N4Gtard," and "NeoFAG," it's hilarious. I don't have a strong preference, but some keyboard warrior types get aroused way too easily.

I don't. And I never will.

I buy every console because I like staying up on console gaming, it's my hobby.

The console wars are just too easy to get into. Companies put big bucks into shaping the discourse about their products, and about their competitor's. I'm sure a fair bit of it is a war by proxy... but eventually someone will type something that either resonates with you or really burns you... then BAM herpes. What were we talking about?

Console Wars will happen even without us enthusiasts participating much. Even if it is stupid, I've decided to speak my mind and see what happens, even if I don't really invest my emotions in it. I might be argueing with a marketing firm after all. I will never j'accuse! anyone of that either, I think that is a terrible assumption to make at any specific point.

Edit:

I kinda want to add also, this thread has been a great read with great posts. It's nice to see so much good thought in a console wars thread.

Eh, don't really care about the "console war" to a degree. I have a PS4 because I think it's the better console (for my needs), but I had a 360 and an Xbox before this. Sure I'm an adult and might eventually buy both, but I really don't want to spend the money and I don't have THAT much game time.

That said, I have always enjoyed debating and it really bothers me when people treat objective facts as subjective truths and vice versa (though we all do this, I'm guilty of it too). It starts to bother me when I perceive certain companies doing things that will damage my hobby and there seems to be a blind following towards some of that because (insert company here) can't possibly be wrong in the eyes of its fanbase.

So I guess in my head the discussion generally revolves around my desire to see people articulating the state of things accurately. Not about a certain company "winning."

Console Wars and fanboyism are easily mistaken for being interchangeable. I find that one can comment and add fuel to a "console war" while giving an informed and mostly objective opinion. Fanboyism is unabashed loyalty to one brand/console and giving support regardless of reality or logic. (fanboy example: the wii u arguably has the best graphics to date just look at Mario or Pikmin, ps4 is not really that much different in power it's just the hype and the games aren't that colorful) Hillarious and something I see on GAF a lot. I was a Sega Genesis fanboy as a kid, constantly hyping it over the SNES. While I loved my Genesis I was talking myself out of not being super jealous of SNES exclusives. When I think of fanboys, I think of this mentality.

Now as a grown man I buy every console, poor decision or not, but I will shit all over one if it deserves it. The OG 360 I bought at launch that RRODed deserved it. MS saying HDMI and 1080p were non factors at launch and then adding hdmi a year later pissed me off greatly too. Nintendo's handling of the Wii U deserves the poor sales and critical beating it takes. Ps3s price tag, inferior initial performance, and terrible UI also deserved a ton of critism.

My criticism doesn't mean I hate a system or want it to fail, I am voicing my displeasure in hopes the companies will listen. I love the Wii U but hate Nintendo for how it handled it and am worried that it will die in a year. PS3 ended up being my favorite last gen system over time however due to their exclusives, stereo 3d gaming, vita cross buy, and ps plus despite my initial criticisms.

PS4 is off to a great start and I'm liking the Xb1 exclusives. I bought both day 1 but I bashed the xb1 for months because it was deserved. Who knows which one I'll end up playing more in a few years.

Am I the most objective or informed gamer out there? Hell no. Will I engage in fanboyism? Nope. Will I pop some popcorn and engage in the console war banter by giving my opinions? Oh hell yes.

I like every system. Only ones I avoid are Sony handhelds. Nintendo handhelds provide more what I'm looking for and I can't justify owning 2 handhelds

The majority don't, they just enjoy poking the ones that do. The irony being that a fair few in this topic complaining are the ones usually being poked.

When a company makes decisions that are bad for the hobby, they engender hatred.

Well... I'd argue that quite a few companies have done this and not really been appropriately noticed as such, competition between companies being prioritised higher than the future safety of the ecosystem. Sure, there's high-profile screwups (MS, I'm looking at you), but I'm also concerned about the effects of more gradual eroding.

I don't personally. I enjoy all systems, and while the Xbox ecosystem is my preference, I don't spend my time investing myself in a made up "war".

I spend my time gaming, helping others in all the gaming communities, and posting the odd joke now and again, and that is my involvement in the "war". ;)

I don't. Anyone who "console wars" seriously is a compete idiot.

"Oh no! Someone said something bad about my preferred electronics machine and company! This is horrible!

I think it's down to people justifying their console choice & the money they have spent/invested.

Most people can only afford one console so they will always try & defend it when people with another system call it names or say the games/graphics/audio etc are not as good as 'their' console.

Nobody would admit to buying a inferior item/product, it's just the same as the Apple v Android people & Ford v GM etc.

if you can't budget out 1 grand over a span of half a decade or so, stop waging war on the internet and open up excel and budget stuff!

are you married? do you have kids? there're many 'adults' who, even if they were to budget out $1000, would have other, more important, places to use it than on dual/triple consoles...

Exactly like me. Despite loving the Xbox ecossystem (I usualy like MS products but I'm no fanboy) I love the PS4 and I would gladly buy a WiiU. Unfortunately I don't have the money to buy them all so I must choose only one of them. I'm still deciding.

Console wars are stupid and for those who have too much time on their hands. Sometimes I wish I had time to even play a game so you won't see me wasting my time on stupid wars.

I don't "console war" because I'm adult. It sounds to me like your asking why immature but slightly older people why they console war. Which they shouldn't, it changes nothing, It helps no one.

stop making so much sense. Console warring has no room for being pragmatic.

I don't like the things Microsoft has done in the lead up to the XBOne and I don't like guys like Penello coming on here telling flat out lies about their console. So yeah I'm going to call out bullshit where I see bullshit. MS showed just how willing they are to screw gamers over if they can get away with it.

Yeah I own all the current gen consoles since I don't want to miss out on good exclusives, and MS keeps doing things that make me regret buying their console such as the very quick "price drop" for lack of a better term, and making their games almost like Free To Play games with the level of IAP.

I keep seeing it claimed on GAF that Penello "lied." Can anyone point out one clear instance of Penello KNOWINGLY saying something untrue? Or is GAF just sore that he passed on something he was ignorant about? That's quite a bit different than lying.

I play/buy what I like.

Only time I ever made fun was of my friend for not owning a 360 when everyone else did and he was missing out on so much while everyone was playing games like Super Meat Boy. He didn't have a PC either.

But it was more like, hey you're missing out vs. YOUZ DUMBZ CUZ YOU PIXK PESSTREEE

Funny thing about "console wars" on Internet is that Nintendo has pretty much its own category and Sony/MS fans are hating each other , but when PC(Steam) fan appear in the dicussion they are suddently best friends against common enemy

are you married? do you have kids? there're many 'adults' who, even if they were to budget out $1000, would have other, more important, places to use it than on dual/triple consoles...

hmmm i guess in that situation makes sense... but that brings the point, should adults that are married and with kids be waging wars over game consoles?

Same here! I own a PS4, X1, 360, PS3, 3DS XL, PC, PSV (which I recently gave to my brother for a bit :(). I really want a Wii U but I already find myself stretching thin with my backlog and time available to play. Point is, I can prefer one thing over another, I prefer certain things above to others, but I don't sit on forums spewing hate all day for some imaginary war. :)

never occurred to you that there're 'adults' with wives & kids? 'nuff said...

should adults be console waring? i can only speak for myself:

i don't 'console war'. i just don't buy/use ms products, & haven't for over a decade. i also don't buy soft drinks or chips. do i want these companies to fail? not especially, but i wouldn't miss'm if they did :) . they're not offering me something i want, or i feel i need to have...

not that i think sony's perfect, or that apple isn't fucked-up. it's just a mix of limited funds, &, in my personal judgement, the lesser of 2 evils / more appealing products (or, in the case of soft drinks/chips, opting for a healthy diet :) )...

I think it starts out with people just trying to point out inaccuracies in others posts, in an effort to keep the fire from raging. But inevitably the fire does rage, and some get caught up in it's smoke.

Console warring is fun and makes it exciting. I love the flames, melt downs and such on GAF but deep down I know it's best for consumers and industry if all major players are healthy. Competition keeps things moving in the right direction (see XBL forcing Sony to create PSN which is now forcing XBL to become better).

In the end, it's all good and fun but I wish all sides well.

I love the implication that only non-adults are immature enough to engage in console wars. There are plenty of stupid adults as well.

Listening to old 1up podcasts, and it seems like the argument for console wars is because kids can only afford one console and gotta feel defensive about their purchase?

I know gaf audience is mostly of the older crowd who has jobs who probably can afford all the consoles and maybe even a pc too (layoff italian meals), so what motivates you to war? exclusives? suckered into marketing? bored at work and need to vent on something?

I mean sony and ms are about the same 'evil', one just has a better marketing strategy today. this can easily change.
I think the question relegates consoles and games to the realm of child's play. Adults shill for sports teams, artists, movies, clothing brands, cars, coffee brands, restaurants and phones regardless of financial exclusion. Console wars aren't particularly unique. People want to feel validated in their consumer habits and choices.

I don't "console war" but I do only use one platform.

Just because I work doesn't mean I have so much time in my life dedicated to gaming like when I was a child. I simply rather determine what platform is best for me and provides the most value.

To me it is completely pointless to go through the motions of buying each platform for these handful of trumped up "exclusive" titles, that I'd literally maybe purchase, and maybe play through once, ever. I'm simply not enough of a gamer to care.

My money is best invested in other things I love

I don't anymore. There is just too much negativity these days. People talk shit more than praise. Or when they do praise, they have to take jabs. Its tiring having to skim through so many crappy posts to find good ones from honest posters that don't post tongue in cheek.

I kind of kneejerk response to what I perceive as ignorant fanaticism. I happen to find myself responding to Sony-only gamers who like to attack Nintendo more often that not, as I buy all consoles from both companies, so I
at least think I
have a pretty well-informed opinion on what is going in both camps.

Look into my eyes.

They saw shit you can never comprehend.

Thanks for making me laugh out loud at work.

I work with guys in their sixties that argue over Ford vs Chevy all the time. It's all in good fun for the most part, although some probably are a little too over the top.

Nothing wrong with console warring. Alot of the forum engages in it and it makes the biggest threads. The annoying part is people who can't acknowledge that they are indeed a fanboy of a certain company and that it colors their talking points. Also PC gamers are included in the console wars as much as they like to think that they are above the fray somehow. I don't get how having a PC grants you a pass from being a fanboy or a troll.
