Ant-Man |Spoiler Thread| I Think Our First Move Should Be Calling The Avengers

Problem there is you need an actress who can hold her own against Douglas (who'll need to be de-aged, which is costly.) And those actresses aren't going to be all 'yeah, I'll sign a multiple film contract tying me down for a minute of screentime.'

Yup. It's also the reason that the only picture of Janet they showed, her face was covered by a hat. Part hasn't been cast yet.

Luis is definitely a stereotype in some ways but I don't see him as a harmful character, no more than any of the other crooks in the movie. He's actually a good guy (he saved that guy he punched out at the end) and as mentioned, isn't actually an idiot or anything and is actually cultured.

he's a neocubist so he's fine in my book

Luis was probably my favorite part of the film...along with the giant Thomas train at the end.

Overall I enjoyed it, although something seemed a little off throughout the film.

Train was good. I also liked Hank inflating that tank and then also dragging the keychain behind it when it busted out the building.

I think there was something shitty in the sound mixing. A ton of the movie is ADR because of size and the helmet, it didn't really sound natural to me. Or at least it was off-putting getting so many lines without any facial expression attached.

I'm not latino so I can't say whether he should or shouldn't be offended but Luis seemed more of a scatterbrain than Mexican stereotype. He's an ex-con but didn't come across as a gangbanger at all. Luis is even cultured in fine wine and modern art!

Michael Peña has said in interviews that most of his dialogue that made the final cut was improvised. And that he based his interpretation of Luis on one of his friends.

Just got back! I can't disagree with the criticism that the movie only gets better as it goes on. I actually did not like the movie right up to when the heist started, when I thought it got a lot more quality from there on out

Can someone explain in detail what was up with the end credits scene? Was Bucky hurt? Why would they need Ant-Man for that, assuming that was who Falcon was referring to when he said "I know a guy." I thought Cap had mentioned where Stark was at that moment but I couldn't make out the word

Bucky's metal arm seemed to be trapped in a machine press or something.

I would assume that Cap'n'Falcon want to help Bucky escape. They think about asking Tony for help, but an 'accord', e.g. treaty might make that impossible. I would imagine this scene happens after a registration act or similar gets passed and the Avengers get bound by it.

Falcon: Hey Cap... This would have been a lot easier a week ago.
Cap: If we call Tony...
Falcon: Nah, he won't believe us.
Cap: Even if he did--
Falcon: Who knows if the accord would let him help.
Cap: We're on our own.
Falcon: Maybe not. I know a guy.

It was a scene lifted from civil wars. It really didnt explain the context, but its more like a bridge between this and the civil war movie, a short tease that ant-man is going to interact with these guys in the future. You'll know everything about this scene when you watch civil war next year.

Okay. I've collected my thoughts after watching. This was an enjoyable, good, film. The fights, ant infiltration, were great, and the supporting characters, and humor were great.

I hope it gets a sequel were Paul Rudd can get some actual development. That's my main gripe with the movie. Douglas has way too much development for not being the main character. It felt like Rudd was just... I don't know... there. Was this a redemption story? Nah, Rudd was Robin Hood. Did anyone have an arc? Not really..? Uh, Douglas apologized? That's kinda an arc? Uh. The (Not Gyp Rosetti) Step Dad had a bigger character arc than the main characters. Think about that.

Ant-Man definitely has my favorite power set of any of the other Marvel heroes so far. Most of em can just punch really hard and/or fly and/or maybe shoot things, but shrinking & being best friends with ants is way more interesting to me.

Just watched it. Some observations;

- I really like Rudd. He's cool, funny and makes it work.
- I thought overall Douglas felt more like the main character. Not a bad thing, because I like what he did with Pym.
- Some impressive CGI going around. In the first scene where Douglas is like 26 years younger, it shows! Damn. I thought I was watching 1980-ish movie with Douglas. On the other hand, Peggy looked far too young for someone in her seventies. Kinda bugged me. (Pun intended)
- Darren Cross is the most forgettable Marvel villain since Whiplash in Iron Man 2. Paper thin character, lame motivations. He's got a cool suit though.
- Antony :(
- There are a few scenes in the movie that just scream Edgar Wright. Glad not everything got scrapped. The bugzapper scene made me lol.
- Ant-Man vs. Falcon was great!
- Tales to Astonish! I understood that reference.
- "That's one messed-up dog"
- I guess Hope will appear as Wasp in Civil War?
- And the stinger is great. Can't wait for Civil War.

Not sure is posted, but apparently George RR Martin REALLY liked Ant-Man

http://grrm.livejournal.com/435595.html

Does that mean he wants Ant-Man killed off?

Daren Cross is a lame villain, but thats to be expected in a Marvel movie, his suit and killing thirst was fun enough

I really enjoyed the actor playing him though. He was also great in House of Cards.

The Falcon scene was great and it looked like Anthony Mackie was having a good time in that role.

Oh yeah.

"I wouldn't have called the cops on you if I'd known you had a daughter."

Is one of the more stupid lines I've heard this year.

I don't think this idea was conveyed as well as it could have been. Hope already knew her father wanted this guy to be the new Ant-Man and she didn't agree. The last time her father picked a successor, he picked Darren Cross.

Anybody know what kinda music plays during the Luis stories? Is it on the OST?

edit: nvm, found it, Roy Ayers' Escape. Knew it sounded familiar.

I liked it. Some pacing issues (the movie could have used an extra 30 mins), but the action was fun and the humor was well delivered.

- Falcon is lame

He's ok. Better than War Machine so far. Blech. But we need a lot of "lame" characters around for the arrival of Thanos. He needs to kill a lot of people.

No way, Rhodey has been pretty awesome since Cheadle took over. He does a lot with the scraps he is given.

As I think back to those scraps, I might have to agree, actually. Overall, but not fighting-wise, unless I'm just forgetting something -- as I mostly forgot about Iron Man 2/3 other than IM2 sucks and IM3 had a weird twist with Mandarin. Falcon vs Ant-Man was better than any fight scene with War Machine/Iron Patriot that I can think of. Could be because War Machine has just been poorly written IMO so far in the action scenes he's in. I liked his story-telling at the party in AOU though, lol.

The final battle in Iron Man 2 is one of the best action sequences in the MCU IMO, despite whiplash being a useless POS

it's just super fucking cool

I like Cheadle a lot in the role, not a fan of Howard's style.

Don Cheadle can play literally any role better than Howard.

except Rhodey.

but seriously, Cheadle was weak in IM2.. but to be fair that entire film was weak. His chemistry with RDJ in IM3 was much better.. and for the 30 seconds he was in it, he was great in Avengers 2.

Being a better actor doesn't make Cheadle a better fit for every character.

Howard fit the character of Rhodey better, he can play the type who'd want to pimp out a robotic suit with an abundance of cool weapons. And he had much better chemistry with Downey than Cheadle.

yeah Cheadle is struggling as Rhodie but stupid Howard thought he was the shit and got booted

all those movies and money gone, just like that, what a dummy

but still, after seeing the newer commercial, faLcon :P

Falcon was pretty great in Winter Soldier but he'll unfortunately always just be Captain America's sidekick. All he is good for anyway is support.

Man, I'd love a good Spider-man vs Ant-Man fight in civil war. Too bad spidey will be a brief cameo at best.

Really enjoyed this, good solid film. Favorite gag was probably when Luis starts his first story and he's at the wine tasting, just a wonderful bit of absurdity against expectation

Saw the movie tonight.

It was good not great. It was surprisingly not that funny most of the time, and the tone definitely didn't feel like an Edgar Wright movie. The last fight had it's moments that was similar to what we might have gotten.. but most of the movie was not poking fun at the absurdity of ant-man nearly as much as we probably would have gotten.

It was overall pretty well paced, and enjoyable and the plot was very straightforward and understandable.

I feel like I was a very efficiently made Summer blockbuster that wasn't objectionable in any real way and had some high points in the movie.

I'm guessing Wright left the movie sometime around the point that the Avengers were written into the script and everything had to refer back to the rest of the universe.

Given the production history of this movie it could have been a total and complete hot mess and was absolutely not that, so kudos all around.

There was 100% zero chemistry between the two mains though. Wow.

Not Lucious Fox.

Also, better actor or not, RDJ and Howard had legit chemistry and friends in the first movie. I legit thought they cared about one another in the movie and you could feel they had a strong bond.

I get the feeling Cheadle is just a dude in a suit and don't really think he and Tony feel close.

Has anyone figured out what was supposed to be hidden in the scene at the end when Ant Man has to go super small and enters the Phantom(?) Zone? In interviews the Director said fans havent spotted the small detail during that scene yet to his knowledge at the time and I couldnt spot anything. I figured it was just the original Wasp but I never saw her.

Cheadle's Rhodey is nothing but a clown. If they had to recast the role should have gone to Cuba Gooding Jr. It could have been his comeback just like Iron Man was to RDJ.

You saw Janet's silhouette

I like Cheadle but I could definitely get behind this.

I liked this a lot more than I expected to. It was fun and inventive, and the Marvel machine didn't suck the life out of the script and performances the way it often does. It had good characters and heart (Guardians was an empty spectacle in comparison), but it was cursed with a cold, empty villain once again, and the universe links felt shoehorned in. It seems there was still a lot of Edgar Wright's influence left in the picture. The audience (which was pretty diverse) loved the comedic characters, especially Peña (and I thought he was great, too). It reminded me a little of what I like about Daredevil: less kitchen-sink approach, more focus, more individuality.

Yeah,

I will say that Marvel needs to sort their villian situation out soon.

Loki is the only villian anyone gives two fucks about. And Hydra I guess? But that's just a faceless organization.

Even then, I'm convinced people love Tom Hiddleston and not Loki.
