It doesn't sound like you should buy this until it's cheaper if even then OP. About being overrated... Everything is overrated and underrated to someone. There is always people who "doesn't understand what other people see" what they can't see in something and vice versa. Does TLOU break new ground with it's gameplay? No it doesn't. Does the gameplay elements come together to create a cohesive and satisfying, if not revolutionary game experience? I think it does. Some people here disagree. I guess in the end, it boils down to either "I don't like thing/ I like thing". a Person who sees something universally praised as overrated and doesn't 'get it' doesn't mean that person has attained some kind of higher truth about what is actually good and what is not, and that if everyone else just knew what he knew then everyone would agree with him/her AND vice versa.
Aside from the story, is 'The Last Of Us' really that special?

Hit and miss, just rent it first if you can and see if you'll like it. You'll never get everyone to give you an unanimous answer. I would be in the pass section, but most here will tell you to get it.

I don't think so, I always thought it was extremely overrated, and even with regards to the story it takes ages to actually get going as well.
IMO, the game only really stands out as something special once you get to autumn and winter. It's definitely got a fantastic ending though.

Also, pretty much all of the character and story stuff happens outside those "pretty" cutscenes; in the incidental dialogue and walking-talking-chilling bits, which you should know because you played it all the way through.

That was what killed the game for me. She seemed almost cartoonish compared to Clementine in TWD. Clem reminded me of my daughter; Ellie struck me as someone trying to Mary Sue in their teenage alter ego.

I was really in awe with the bow and arrow. It breaks if you hit the bulletproof vest or wall but you can still pick out your arrow if it's embedded in the enemy's head or softer part the body. Also getting a headshot with your bow from afar feels so good.
That felt special to me, like every shot to the head counted. I think I spent most of my time just stealthily around trying to get as many headshots as possible.

How's Clementine even comparable? She grew up in a normal society with a family, school etc. and then watched it go to hell. All Ellie has known is that hell hole since she was born after the outbreak. Do you really think it's surprising that a 14 year old would be spewing profanity in a society where there really aren't any rules? It's not like she'd ever be taught not to use that type of language.
Of course hype is nice to have, it's nice to have that sort of burst community spirit.
In 10 years though will anyone play The Last Of Us because... they want to return to personal favourite? How about someone playing through what the general media considered GOTY? What about someone playing only high selling titles?

I dunno! I mean for me, having played lots of games I thought TLOU was rather average and far too much like Uncharted and various other movie games. I think it really tapped a sort of pop culture movement with zombies and apocalyptica and whatnot so it's riding a wave of people whet with those ideas.

Reading the OP, it sounds like you have no interest in playing the game at all. And the title question is silly anyway, since what makes it great is the entire combination of its elements. It be like asking "besides Gordon Willis cinematography, was The Godfather really that special?" "Besides its lead performances, was Sunset Blvd really that special?"

Speaking for myself, I found it to be a very good game, but not any sort of revelation. The story does a few bold things, the gameplay is solid, but neither really captivated me. I never tried the multiplayer, and am tempted to pick the remaster up for that reason alone, but will likely pass on account of having too much other stuff to do.

The problem with a thread like this is that I can go on to explain in full detail why I think it is great and it would be ignored in favor of a statement like "The gameplay is mediocre at best". OP and others are likely to latch on to a statement or two that confirms their preconceived notions.
The game won 200 GOTY awards, has had countless praise on this board and others. Many going as far as to call it Game of the Generation, me included. This type of thread has been made countless times already. If you are not convinced up to this point, I don't see how this thread is going to change anything.

No. But I don't see how that changes anything. Ellie never had a family. She grew up in a militarized zone where she could be walking down the street and see the military execute someone because they were detected as being infected. Meanwhile Clementine grew up in what was likely a loving home where she never saw any of that. Yet you expect Ellie to be like her?
Is it necessary to have kids to know what it's like to be one? Pretty sure we've all been there.

There's nothing special about Last of Us, not even the story. Is a very pretty and safe game, kind of what movie goers would call ''Oscar Bait''. That doesn't make it a bad game, is greater than the sum of it's parts I've heard.

On hard or survivor there definitely isn't an abundance of supplies.

The gameplay is actually very good. I wouldn't say it would be my GOTY without the story, no, there are better gameplays out there for sure. That said, you're not asking if it's the best gameplay in the world, only if it's still good and if you should buy it, and it really is, go for it. Play it on Hard with Listen Mode off and have fun exploring and sneaking.

Enemy encounters made my palms sweat and heart race. Despite failing over and over and having to try the same scenarios multiple times with varied approaches the game never broke and felt fresh and exhilarating. I think it is one of the best playing games of last gen.

I have to say that the best way to play the game for the first time is to play it on survivor mode. The feeling of scavenging the landscape for much needed items and the fact that almost everything can kill you instantaneously really heightens the survivalist atmosphere of the game.
Everything about this game is fantastic. The storyline, visuals, the characters, gameplay, AI and the music. Especially the music, its what made this game so wonderful
Its one of the greatest games of the gaming history. Everyone should give it a try.

I disagree, Hard is the best balanced difficulty IMO. Survivor can be fun for future playthroughs, but if you start on Survivor or Grounded, you'll miss a very fun part of the gameplay, because resources are too limited and you can't even craft stuff that will give you gameplay variety. Sure, it's probably more realistic and makes it more of a survival game, but still, I wouldn't like to miss on gameplay variety. Hard is the perfect difficulty for this game. I wish they could make a harder mode with Hard supplies but harder encounters, maybe even remixed enemies so even people who beat it like 10 times will get surprised.
For me both The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite, being released so close to eachother, really highlighted a larger issue within gaming culture with this extreme inferiority complex it seems to suffer from. The constant comparisons with film (like the ridiculous Citizien Kane comments) and notions like "this is the game you can finally show to your parents/girlfriend/wife and not feel embarrased". People seem to be desperately seeking validation for their hobby and these seem to be the types of games they latch on to for that. Feels like an endless circle at this point.
Yes, it's really that special. The encounters in the game are tense and memorable, you can't just run and gun, the game forces you to think carefully, plan your actions, even how you ration ammo and materials can determine how challenging the next encounter will be.
In short, it's a wonderful game that just so happens to have a well told narrative woven into it.

Whenever there's a game of which everyone says that it is very good, why not try it out if you have the platform to play it on? You know, why not?
I recommend you not to look for reasons to not play a game or cut it into pieces like stealth, 3rd person shooter, survival, "nah I don't need that". I know way too many people who miss the best games just because of this attitude. Just play it, dive into the experience and see what comes out. Sometimes it will be worth it, sometimes it won't. But you will remember the worthy moments for years.
Imagine if someone said Shadow of the Colossus was boring, because there are no sidequests, NPC's, a level and skill system and just 16 enemies to fight. In fact, I know people who say this. And of course it is legitimate. I just feel sorry for them, because they didn't experience the game as I did.
I don't know what your priorities in videogames are. But if one of them is emotion and immersion, give TLOU a chance.

The easy, on-the-fly crafting system while trying to scavenge and manage your resources puts this game over the top.
That and the great characters. There are very little pure-hearts left. As others have said, it's the interaction with other humans and not zombies that you really need to worry about.
