AusGAF 5/5 - Everything's Amazing and Nobody's Happy, a rental at best

They should rename Margaret Court Arena to "Twisted Old Fundamentalist Bigot Arena".

She really should shut her mouth.
Tennis Australia have done well to put out there that they don't agree with her views but she is still one of the most successful tennis players we have had.

Keeping the name while denouncing her bullshit shows that you can take inspiration from the player she was while not agreeing with her personal views. It can be another reminder of the ability of sports people who are just as flawed as the rest of us.

yeah, true....I want to
see what happens next
though >_<

maybe it'll be remade for tv. Has cult status written all over it.
It's another Donnie Darko type indie movie, I don't expect it to be expanded upon as that would remove a bit of the mystique. Like how the Matrix movies dulled the magic that was touched upon in the first movie and left up to the viewer to dream up in their imagination beyond what the creator could ever accomplish.

Ah, yeah, I went searching to find the list of confirmed names again and found your discussion with deek mentioning that now. However, it's looking like MQU is a no-go, unless somebody works there. The library is closed on Sundays and the room booking system seems to only be open to staff. Not even student clubs can book rooms without assistance, according to what I found on their webpage.

If you can come up with a more centralised location that we actually can legally use, I'm certainly happy to make my way out there.

That really is a shame, I thought MQU would have been perfect. Sucks to be them too, MQU is meant to have an active RP society there which runs MacquarieCon each year. They must have regular arrangements made.

I'm all out of ideas for something more central. The only other place I know is Unlimited Hobbies at Blacktown which is right near the station. That's just flipping the length of the trip for everyone else unfortunately, which is a shame because their facilities are excellent.

Unless anyone else has an idea for a place to play, it's at Clipper's or UNSW. Fingers crossed it's a dry weather day, though the last time I rode into the city, I got lost, it's not something I do often.

Thanks! That's certainly another vote for something more Northern, obviously ;)

The difference with events like that is that they pay to rent the rooms. That service is definitely open to us, but it'd be cheaper to get you a cab :p.

Also, I don't see how you can get lost coming out this way. You'd just take a train to Central, then catch the bus from outside Central directly to UNSW or my place (well, half a block away). There's another bus you can catch from Bondi Junction to avoid Central Station entirely as well.

I'm talking on my motorcycle, not the bus. I probably should've emphasised that point. I've not yet gotten lost whilst on a bus.

Oh, I realised that, yeah. But I thought you weren't able to bring the games on your bike, so assumed you thought you might need to travel within the city somewhere on PT...

Anyway, if you come in by bike, you should avoid the city. Parramatta Rd all the way to City Rd, then Cleveland St to get you to Anzac Parade, which you follow to get to UNSW or turn off from to get to my place after a few easy turns.

I'm tentatively good for the 12th, should know definitely by mid this week (potentially have some family stuff on that weekend).

I'm in Dulwich Hill, so UNSW is good for me, but I'll be on PT so I'm happy to go wherever as long as I can get trains or buses there.

So all we wanted was to book a lovely-sounding apartment in NYC for the first week of April. We filled in the AirBnB web form and sat back to wait for the response.

They auth'ed our card, as expected.

The property owner got back to us confirming the wrong dates. We double-checked - we had entered the correct dates in the web form (all the correct info was in the confirmation AirBnB sent us.)

We were told that would be fixed.

Two days later a second auth appeared on our card. Calls were made to the bank and to AirBnB, all saying that it'd be cleared up.

The next day the third auth appeared on our card. By now, it was maxed out. Emergency funds transfers were made.

The next day we got an irate email from AirBnB saying that we'd not responded to an email from days ago (we had not received the email, and we'd been talking to AirBnB staff about the stuffup anyway). And they said they were going to cancel the booking. That didn't happen.

Except the next day a fourth auth hit our card. More funds transfers to un-max the card.

And then the owner sent us an email saying that it was all too hard and they were cancelling our booking. We had only conversed with her right back at the start so I have no idea what shenanigans AirBnB staff were getting up to behind the scenes.

Five days later there's two charges on our card. One is being reversed. The other AirBnB are disputing even exists. Fortunately the bank is on our side.

I should be able to bring the games on my bike, I've got some saddlebags. It's only if it's raining that it becomes a problem, since I'm a bit short on the wet weather gear.

Just did a test fit in the saddlebags as I thought it might be close. One of the rivets on the fastening strap snapped out of nowhere, no strain was being put on it at all. Either it was weakened to begin with or I have my doubts about the sturdiness of these bags. I've never used them before, they came with the bike when I bought it. I have a feeling I may have to abandon riding in and use PT, and the buses are pretty ordinary in my area on a Sunday (they only come once hourly and stop at 7pm).

To put things in perspective, you may only need to bring one game, perhaps in a backpack? Even none might be fine. I'm buying Munchkin from Games Paradise as it's 10% off right now with free shipping. Should arrive easily by the 12th. I've also got Ticket to Ride and Get Nifty, and if you want to bring one of your others along, that's heaps to keep us entertained.

Edit: Oh, well not free shipping, but I'm still going to get it, I think.

Edit 2: While seeing if there was anything else to buy, I just remembered I also have the Civilization card game that came with the Civilization Chronicles pack. No idea if it's any good, though...

Be careful with Games Paradise... We ordered some stuff late last year and it took 10 days for them to ship something that was in stock. When we questioned them they were rude as hell. In the end we tried to cancel the order and they said it was too late, they had shipped it that morning. We kicked up a stink and they ended up giving us a refund, so we got a couple of games essentially for free. But previous to that I had ordered something from them and had it delivered within a few days, so who knows.

I suppose for starters, you're right. I can easily bring Munchkin, Resistance and Pandemic in a backpack. That, plus your games should be plenty, thinking about it.

I say I can bring Munchkin because the things I've heard about Games Paradise indicate you may not receive your copy by the 12th.

Anyone ordered GAF T-Shirts lately? Wondering if I should grab M or L. Don't have a tape measure handy. I have a bit of a beer belly still. Don't want them to be too loose as I have a bunch of cool T-shirts that I don't wear any more (well, at the moment I am being too big) and would hate to never use them once I knock off a few kilos.

EDIT: Sweeet. The little guy is finally saying "Okay" all the time. Still can't run around holding a sultana packet and not drop any yet though.

I never feel comfortable using these kinds of services unless I know people who have used it a lot. Especially in English speaking countries I would try and get in direct contact and try and track down places that others recommend. Hope your bank gets everything fixed for you nice and quick.

More like a National Monument. Because he is so fat. With food and greed. And bullshit.

At least the poll of 400 people understand that.

Thumbs up to the distinguished Quentin Bryce, quite the lady. Also Jack Brabham is teh sex.

I don't know why chopsticks are still used at all.

What's the deal, Asians? The world progressed and moved onto better utensils. You guys gave us gun powder, we gave you forks, and more importantly, sporks.

That is the cutest mental image ever. Can't remember the last time I had sultanas out of one of those cardboard packets, though :( (also, I preferred currants to sultanas)

Agreed on all counts. No "magnate" should ever make it on the list because as much as they may say otherwise, they're only doing what they do because of greed or ego, not for the greater good.

Seriously, fuck him.

Nah I love chopsticks. I require them when eating Chinese because if I use a fork I eat it too quickly and get a stomach ache. Using chopsticks you can savour every piece easier and clump the rice up together. Same with Sushi and noodles. I know I am eating this Mi Goreng way too quickly with a fork but I already got it dirty stirring it in the pot so my OCD stopped me from dirtying chopsticks too.

Also love is letting the other person have the last pack of Mi Goreng.

My Poppa was a big fan of fruit cake (as am I) so I know where he gets his tarny love from. Plus they are healthy and so damn easy to give him as a snack when we don't have meals ready for him. Too damn hot today to cook anything up, will be a fruit day for him.

I used to eat with a fork and spoon in Chinese restaurants when I was young, because I didn't have the skills to use chopsticks. It was very shameful.

its more cultural than utility.

A friend of my wife's has a husband who's a regular in the paralympics. He saw an athlete (unnecessary connections) ... people I vaguely know saw an athelete with no arms eating one day. With chopsticks held in one foot. There's some utility in that ;-)

Oh and by the way, count me out of the board game meet.

But if it does end up happening at unsw, I might drop by and say hi or something:)

You like guitar? You like Soothsayer. Still so good after all these years. His new relaxed guitar album is fantastic, a great companion piece to Colma.

any chopstick specialists? How do you cut your food like katsu without looking like a savage

Anything katsu is always cut/perforated before it reaches me so I've never had that issue but like Midonnay said pick it up with chopsticks, take a bite, put it down. That is what I do with big bits of Sushi.

Down with metal chopsticks! Or even plastic ones without the grippy part. The food just slips through... Perhaps I don't have the required torque to hold food with metal ones. Wooden all the way.

Why is it so hot still? Ugh. Just hung out some washing and I'm sweating. Chili and tomato plants not looking crash hot.

I actually have trouble eating asian food without chopsticks. Forks and spoons don't really work when you're trying to eat from a tiny bowl.

As someone who is four generations Australian and only started using chopsticks in their 20s, I can say I much prefer using them when food is bite size or for anything with noodles. They are much better suited to rice, noodles and already chopped up chunks of food than cutlery and I will use them every time if they are available for these types of dishes.

Come on, why don't you join us? We won't bite and I think we're all board game newbies, except for Danoss. I don't want to pressure you, though. Do what your comfortable with :)

Same here. I think years of use have gotten me to the point where chopsticks are much more useful. I remember having trouble for a long time as a kid though.

Also it is INSANELY hot here, worst of the summer. We have had hotter days but it is so damn sticky and humid. Gone down a bit now but it has done the damage as now the temperature is rising. Also I was stupid and mowed the lawns.

Also check your pee ems!

I just don't have the time, and if I did it would be spent sleeping and buying groceries, cleaning house, organising stuff etc. Board games, D&D, roleplaying aren't my thing either.

Also, meeting people from the internet is scary! D:

Yeah man, like Clips said, don't be afraid of us, it'll be fun. I've at least met Rahk and Clipper, and they're good blokes. I'm sure everyone else is cool too. Come join the fun.

Edit: Oh, fair enough. Well if you feel like dropping by to say hi, that'd be cool!

Second. I don't dislike chopsticks, I just don't think they are as good as western cutlery. The one good thing about them is they work with everything (except chopping) while forks and spoons work best for different types of food.
