I'm back to having a shoe dilemma since my right shoe now has a split down the side, You can see my pretty socks!

I think i'm going to give up on runners as general and work wear. They don't seem to be doing all that well. I would like to get some "Adult" shoes however I guess they would fall apart with warehouse work as well.

I guess i'm left with boots? I don't really want boots though, I just have something against them. It also means I will need to pick up 2 pairs of shoes. One for work and the other for leisure times.

I have no idea what i'm doing D:

If you are working in a warehouse, get boots. Good leather pair should last ages.

Edit: Speaking of shoes, I still need a new pair of tigers. My current pairs sole is getting rather thin.

Jase/reptile type post incoming.

I had absolutely no intention of playing this game but fucking hell, at $12 for a Steam key? GMG have done it again. I'll have to work out how to proxy on Linux so I can buy it from work.

People like to have opinions. Best to go with what you like and take in a little of the opinions given to you by your closest confidants as they would likely know what you would be happiest with. Baldness has meant that it is always a shave for me though :(
ENJOY YOUR HAIR WHILE YOU CAN !! :(

Is why I barely get it cut. I know I'm gonna bald more than my dad did. It's already happening.

I know you guys with your girlfriends and wives and babies and families and stuff will laugh at me, but tonight i was super nervous about messaging a girl and i did it anyway and everything is turning out aces

Fuckin high five man. If I go back to being single I'll probably stay single ahahha, that sht terrifies me, even if I can hold a conversation with a lady to number in person. The texting, calling and initial contact honestly scares me more than anyhing. Being introduced? Shit, hour long convo no issues. If I have to initiate that? Oh my god hold me.

Man, Fridays are pretty great. Awesome day outside, coffee on the train and now just helped get a woman out of a lift that was stuck between floors.

:)

Did you have to rush off and fix your lineup even though she was offering sexual favours?

I want a dog already, stop making me want one more. Stop it! Fucking hell Border Collies are so goddamn cute. Goddamn labs are so goddamn cute. Goddamn.

Buy some boots for work. Buy some shoes for general wear. Win/win?

Boots are awesome dude. Good ones are pretty comfortable too. And if you have separate shoes for both work and non-work then they'll both probably last longer.

I have a big arse crack in the sole of my shoe. I only found out about it last week when it was raining too. I'm trying to just ignore it, but I think I'm going to have to buy new ones.

I don't believe you do. Just use your normal GMG account and it should go through.

I was able to use my normal account on a UK purchase through a proxy ages ago.

Is it worth the effort? I don't know much about the game aside from the people going on about it being a GeoW ripoff.

There are plenty of demoes around. I played the demo half a dozen times, it's quite fun. It plays quite differently to Gears.

I won't have time to play a demo tonight and from what people in the ozbargian post said, it'll expire at 8pm Perth time (so like 9-9:30 melb). I'm gonna be out. Maybe just give it a miss and buy another time.

Speaking of games though, did anyone buy PixelJunk Eden like I did? (Steam)

getting one of those guys to gift you stuff is normally super easy. The only real similarities between Gears and SM is big dudes with big guns in big armor, they play very differently.

IMO worth it

interesting read, reflects my story pretty well. Except for the parts about financial responsibility haha. I barely buy games any more, but when I do I play the hell out of them. I'm almost through Skyward Sword on Hero mode and I've pumped way too many hours into multiplayer FPSs this last year.

also, best tea ever is that Buddhist tea with the unfurling leaves. Deeeeelicious.

Tea snobs unite! I've brought home tea from China, San Francisco and Japan, and have so much I can't possibly get through it all in a timely fashion. Bi luo chun, gunpowder and silver tip are my teas of choice. Got one called Dragon Wall (or Well, or something) from San Francisco, really good stuff. Haven't seen it here. Drink silver tip mainly when I don't want something so strong.

I use a cup that looks pretty much like this one, though the handle on mine is plainer:
purple_clay_cup.jpg
!

Ooh, is that clay? I was just looking at clay teapots and cups yesterday. It's recommended that the clay teapots are used for one type of tea only, which is fine since that would work best for Oolongs I think, and you can get multiple steeps out of one lot of leaves and get different flavours each time.

I have a big arse crack

Sorry, I just had to quote it like this because it makes me laugh.

buddhist tears! I knew there was an actual name, it's concentrated delicious I'm pretty sure.

If it's what I'm thinking of, I know it as Jasmine Dragon Pearls. Kinda looks like this:

Absolutely. I went to an Ag high school and wore Baxter boots around, which are a bit cheaper. All the kids from farms wore RM Williams, since they will hold up for a long time and take a massive beating. They cost more, but are totally worth it. Use the RM Williams boot polish too, it keeps the leather well conditioned and it shines up really nice!

I just read this and I can really relate. I too saw myself in the habits of wanting to burn excess income on something, which ended up being games, that I also didn't play for very long; I'd experience the mechanics and felt I "got it", then moved on. It was also a partial desire to be able to talk about all the latest games on places such as this.

I also had an income change and it does make you re-evaluate your spending habits. It doesn't even take a long hard look to see that what VOOKS the other day called "nomad gaming" is bad for the finances and ultimately not that fulfilling in the long run. At least for me.

I have since turned to pen and paper RPGs, board games and reading books again for my enjoyment. I've found it is much more fulfilling, as well as being a lot cheaper and better value. Two of these hobbies pass the hours with much enjoyment, something you can do with friends face to face. RPGs and board games have given me more enjoyment than any online multiplayer game ever has. The third hobby of reading books is spent alone, but you can still share your experience by discussing it with others who have read it or recommending it to a friend, much like the shared experience of video games.

You look at things in a different light as you get older. It sometimes takes a certain situation to get you to take notice of what you're doing and question it, even just a little, and sometimes the answer is surprising.

The difference between you and me in this regard is that I have no intention of returning to video games as a form of entertainment. In my reflection on it as a pastime, I discovered I wasn't enjoying it as much as I thought I was. The endless purchasing of video games was like a pursuit for something I wasn't going to find. My (what I thought was) passion for video games was just a carry-over from my youth, a time which has long since passed.

Yeah, the one I have is clay, but not nearly that shiny. I just put whatever type of green or white tea I like in the mug, I'm not that much of a snob that I want one mug for each type of tea that I drink. I don't wash it in detergent though as it would absorb that, preferring to give it a wash in hot water when I'm done (and I heat it before putting in any tea as well).

I think that's sad, as there are still a lot of varied and interesting experiences to be had in the medium. It's diverse enough that if you want to play online shooters, or thoughtful indie games, you can. But buying the game of the week is ultimately unfulfilling, whether it's games or something else (see: my 300 DVDs just sitting in a box).

Yeah, multiple mugs is taking it a bit too far. I was looking at teapots thinking it'd be nice to have a clay one for oolongs and a glass one for everything else. Purely because the oolongs spend so much time in the teapot, it might be worth it.

I'm with you on detergents. I don't have clay cups, but I still just do a hot water rinse, before as well as after, like you. The "before" hot water rinse is something a lot of people don't seem to do, which is just as important.

I'm secretly gravitating towards your positions but still being paid to play the vidya

I'm having a lot more fun analysing videogames than playing them these days. I've been ploughing through Fire Emblem Sacred Stones, but the bits that I'm really enjoying is trying to break down the turn-based systems in my head to see which bits I enjoy and which bits I don't.

One day I'll make my own. I dream of a game that combines Mount and Blade, FFTactics series, X-Com, and Fire Emblem. And maybe some visual novels on the side, I don't fucking know.

danoss just play the free indie games for the rest of your gaming days. thats where a lot of the bare-bones innovation is. heaps of varied experiences as well. check out the game jam games from last week, some of them are incredible AND made in 48 hours. there was a weekly competition where people compete to create new gaming experiences based around an idea i found once. if i find it again ill post so you can check it out.

point to all this is: stay away from the commercial games. indie gaming really reignited my interest in gaming, it might for you too.

edit: found it in 5 seconds: http://experimentalgameplay.com/ its monthly, not weekly but still. great ideas there.

Danoss - I can understand the whole "not enjoying" thing with video games. I have always enjoyed them, however I would feel buyers remorse constantly. I'd be out shopping and be super excited to get home and play something, and within a couple of days I'd be moved on to something else. Then my gf would be like "Are you buying another game? Did you already finish [insert game here]?" and I'd hang my head in shame :(

What I find now is that I really look forward to playing games, just less often. And if I don't finish them, I don't feel guilty.

Even though the initial outlay was expensive, buying a new PC and using Steam has probably been the best thing for my gaming habit. I have bought a couple of new releases at about $70 each (Skyrim etc.), and spent no more than $7.50 per game on Steam, and I usually go for the sweet spot of a fiver. It has really made me evaluate the worth of 360 and Wii games, which I used to plonk down $40 or $50 for older ones, or minimum of $80 for anything remotely new.

Although I needed a new PC anyway due to the very nature of it being well...a new PC.

It's just not doing it for me anymore. The buying of many games that people were talking excitedly about was my futile attempt at filling a void that wasn't meant for video games.

Reflecting more deeply on this, it seems that even as a kid, playing games was a social experience for me. Firing up a single player game was a dead-end effort as I would end up just turning it off, dissatisfied, and look for something else to do. This is most likely the reason I played WoW for quite some time, I had people to play with and share my enjoyment, laugh and joke and tell stories as we played.

I still remember the night AusGAF player Amnesia together, which was some time ago. It's a single player game, but we were on Mumble laughing and joking whilst each playing the game. I really enjoyed that, it's exactly like what I used to do as a youngster back when I had my NES or Amiga 500. It's exactly what's missing from a regular session of video gaming.

So I think, in a nutshell, it's not really the games that I enjoy. It's the company and socialising whilst playing the games that enhances the enjoyment of the game itself. This is probably why I have ended up playing traditional RPGs and board games, because socialising with friends is an inherent part of these particular games. The games themselves are fun, but they don't function without other people, and it's the other people that make the playing of the game itself fun by adding the atmosphere on top of it.

Maybe all this says something else entirely about me, but it's what has led me away from the hobby as a whole.

Thanks for reading guys, good to hear there are others with similar views :)
I remember the lesson I learned the day I bought both Viewtiful Joe and F-Zero GX. From EB. At full price. Played them both for an hour or two each and never touched them again.

Tried my best to never make that mistake again.

Reflecting more deeply on this, it seems that even as a kid, playing games was a social experience for me.
It still can be a social experience. It's just you need to find what works for you. If you'd rather talk about them than play them, then maybe that's what works better for you anyway.

I have bought a couple of new releases at about $70 each (Skyrim etc.), and spent no more than $7.50 per game on Steam, and I usually go for the sweet spot of a fiver.
Steam's great, but it's far too easy to buy crap you're barely ever going to play just because it's cheap.

All this praise for Ban's story has made me read it. And yes, it was really good.

I go through phases of getting into and stopping caring about games. I guess I'm different because I've never been a "buy something every week" guy. I'll buy a game I'm interested in which might be three in a week and might be none for months. But not long ago, probably about September October I wasn't playing games at all. I think I had an on-again, off-again relationship with NHL12 but otherwise my Xbox was being used entirely for watching videos and my PC was being used entirely for downloading said videos.

But then stuff I was keen on came out and I started playing again. Without a doubt this will happen to me again later this year. At the moment my girlfriend is in another city so I've got more hands on my time than usual. Thankfully Skyrim continues to fill that time nicely.

I don't buy many games but I still have trouble finished them even though I have no more to move onto. I just move onto watching more TV/films and reading instead.
The only games I've finished in the last while are short hardly-engaging FPS like COD and Battlefield. Although I finished Zelda OOT for the first time recently but that was a big struggle to keep going even though it's an amazing game and my friend gave me Majora's Mask afterwards which I'll probably never finish.

I have a big arse crack in the sole of my shoe.

I read this sentence really slowly. It's fun that way.

This whole article on Crikey was a good read, but this part was a highlight

For example, did you know that “a feature of media reporting that has rapidly emerged in past few years is ‘crowd sourcing’ by ‘citizen journalists’”? Yes. According to Humphreys’s report: “‘Crowd sourcing’ is where individuals using mobile phones pursue reports on incidents and the activities of other individuals by feeding real time information to social media sites such as Facebook, YouTube and MySpace. People with high media profiles are particularly vulnerable to this type of reporting and for them it has security implications because their movements and activities can be tracked by members of the public and criminals.”

I cut down spending on games because I realised that I don't have the time to play everything these days. I was a bit more selective in what I bought last year, and it turned out great. I had time to enjoy the games I really wanted to play, and even finished (shock horror!) most of them.

Hopefully I can be even more selective this year so I can clear out the backlog.

Honestly, I buy maybe one full price game a year. Two, tops, and that's only for special occasions. I might also get one for my birthday / Christmas. And there'll be between five and ten XBLA games I'll pick up, though in the last year it was more like three to five.

Part of its because I'm inside the sausage factory and the last thing I want to do is play more video games after spending all day thinking about the factory process. Part of it is because I'm a tight arse who really can't stomach the thought of spending good money on a video game of all things when there's bills to pay. A LOT of it is because I can't justify the time spent playing it when I could be MAKING things instead. Another part of it is that most games are boring as hell to look at if you're not playing them and I hate making my poor wife suffer through them as I take over the TV.

Oh and there's also the whole iOS thing which has given me a constant stream of free / practically free games that occupy five to ten minutes at a time perfectly before I get guilty about the fact I'm late doing today's comic or whatever.

So, um, yeah, I hear ya?
