AusGAF 5/5 - Everything's Amazing and Nobody's Happy, a rental at best

The Band performed one of the best damn concerts of all time on a tiny little stage. Don't give me that excuse.

Yeah, I'll just say from my limited experience of watching K-pop music vids before Starcraft, a majority of the appeal for me is watching hot girls do sexy dance moves. So stage space is pretty important there.

Also sorry Sal, aside from legs, that didn't really help your case.

Sounds like a bad Eurovision.

Now I like Eurovision, but only once a year.

One thing that shits me about the fat reality shows is the concept of elimination

'we're going to make you better, but if you dont keep up you're out'

and i guarantee those that go out early, never get help again

its ridiculous. Just as many people would watch WITHOUT elimination imo. Sure have incentives for winning each week, but kicking people out is disgusting

Any k pop or j pop I've seen is functionally indistinguishable from non prefix pop, aside from the relative frequencies of different ethnicities and languages. Its all silly clothes and voice modulation.

Why any pop has appeal is beyond me. You could either watch porn where they get it off instead of pretending, or listen to good music where they get it on instead of pretending.

Yeah, I have to admit that K-pop doesn't really do much for me.

It is vaguely hypnotic to watch those dance routines though.

Obviously 'good' music is subjective, so here's one song from each of my top five bands in last.fm:

Radiohead - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2VzLn6DMCE

The Beatles - http://youtu.be/o-0dBYxnub8

The Clash - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMkpRtqJwbw

The Band - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VShpcqd3zE

Sufjan Stevens - http://youtu.be/Sy9maq--z48 (24 minute live song!)

That's good music to me. Pretty varied, too. A 90s/00s alt-rock/electronica/whatever the hell Thom Yorke wants, a 60s pop band, a late 70s punk band, a 60s/70s blues/country/rock 'n roll band, and a 00s folk-come-electronic opera singer.

In honour of National Heroes Day in Mozambique I am watching Hard Boiled while drinking Tequila and Lemonade. Schweppes of course.

DAT BLOODSHED HEROICLY

i think this is more to do with the fact that Bob Hawk is remembered as one of Australia's greatest prime ministers MORE than the fact he skulled a beer
All I know about Hawke is that he is a larikan. No idea on his policies. I know he can drink a beer and if The Simpsons has taught me anything, which it has, it is that politicians need to be able to scull a beer and have an appropriate figure to float around a dam in a tire tube.

GF just got 2 free BDO tickets so we're off to see Soundgarden and Noel Gallagher tonight xD
That sounds good!
and Noel Gallagher tonight xD
That sounds bad!
....can I go now?

Enjoyed their first few efforts before they drowned their sound too much.

protip: don't advertise weight loss shows to cricket fans..... goddamn if there was excess ads every session.
Protip: Choose some celebrities that people actually give a fuck about rather than people that no-one has heard of for years, or have tried to forget for years. Dipper was the only minor draw for me. Not enough to watch that dreck though.

Steam and GOG need offer a virtual showroom for your collections. I would probably pay extra for that.
GOG does have a showroom right? The shelf view. Can't show it off to others with screengrabs though I suppose.
I am pretty sure that Omi almost had the showroom feature of OSCAR up and running!

Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head are amazing albums.

Everything after that is mediocre with only one or two good songs an album.

I've been busy at work and only vaguely heard of something happening with/to our Jules. Can anyone give me a bit of the story?

So should I continue to try and knock C&C3 off my backlog or jump into a cheevo run on Space Marine? Only played half of it at my in-laws so far.

Shaneus you were right about Rosemary Grain Wave knockoffs. Has a hint of onion ring about them. The gf also loved them. I will assume they are healthy? :(

All your music is terrible and you should all feel terrible.

MY taste in music on the other hand is the best shit ever in the entire history of mankind.

Maybe I should have phrased it better then.

K pop examples I have seen to date (and J Pop I guess, but only through association as with J League and K League) are indistinguishable from any other pop like britney spears, nsync, backstreet boys and the more contemporary stuff where they go overboard with the voice filters and needless "ooohhohoohohohohhoohhhhh" up and down the full tone scale their voice allows. Apparently that's soulful, but it's also used way too often.

It's like the popularity of r'n'b a while back. I dont resent it being popular - I resent it being damn near the only thing that plays on radio.

I would just hope no-one who advocates the qualities of k pop turns their nose up at the spice girls on grounds of musical talent. Cos they are well fit.

Well, no, I wouldn't turn my nose up at it. But the qualities of kpop have to do with how the scene is organised, the music shows, the variety shows, how the media works. As well as catchy music, killer dancing, amazing-looking people.

I fail to see how that is any different to the girl power fad that the late 90s saw. Movies, magazines, endless tv coverage. The only difference is the military precision of the cash exploitation, and that is just a natural evolution.

I guess what I resent most is that bands that get the most success tend to be established bands that have members audition to be a part of a fixed style, rather than ones where talented musicians form a band and succeed on their own terms. People in groups like SNSD or whatever may well be talented, but they sure dont seem to be doing it on their own.

Maybe I'm being unrealistic, but I'm looking at bands like Queen when I'm setting the (impossibly high?) standard here.
