Battlefield 3 PC Performance thread

Goddamnit, fixed my stuttering so far.

Apparently I had Textures on Ultra rather than high in my custom setting, oiy. Although I would have thought trying 'High' preset would have done that too, maybe not.

Game is actually playable now, yay

Shouldn't be a prob at all

1920x1080 above 30fps?

I played the beta and I averaged around 25-35 FPS with the game on medium I believe. Has performance increased since the beta or is it still the same?

Really?
Amazing as in above 30 or amazing as in 60s

Putting Deferred AA on always fucks with my FPS.
I've only played the first 3 stages of the campaign and it runs between 40-60, on average around 45-50 but when there's a lot of action going on it drops to 30, but not under. I could just lower the AA and AF a little bit and make it run smoother, won't really make the game look any less awesome.

I just purchased another SSD by Crucial, I have two installed atm that in RAID0. So I was wondering if I add this drive would it have a negative affect on the current setup?

All the drives Crucial, the new one is of a different model, storage capacity is the same. The plan is to install BF3 on the new drive.

Should I be able to play on high? Can't check for another 3 hours, damn work :(.

Yep. No problem. Might wanna ditch the SSAO and MSAA for MP, but you could even run Ultra in SP and have a playable experience.

Hmm did anyone alleviate their stuttering by rolling back to the beta drivers?

I'm at a steady 60, 75% utilization on each card and vram is uncapped yet I'm getting stuttering. Mind you I think this is related to the game rather than me running SLI because I have never

a) had
or
b) noticed microstuttering before

So what gives?

I'm on the beta drivers and I don't notice stuttering in MP. Also weird about the bolded. 580 SLI and my cards are constantly 98-99%.

Odd, I wouldn't think 580s be running at 99% at 1080p. But my numbers are from campaign.

Then again I'm at 2560x1440, though keep in mind I have hbao, blur and msaa off. In the end I think I should be rolling back to beta drivers.... sigh why did I bother with their rushed out fake WHQL bs drivers

Game shouldn't lock up just because you run out of vram, it just stutters more because of lack of frame buffer.

Much as it pains me, guess I'll disable D3D next time I play. Maybe that's giving me issues. Seems weird that single player and 3 other multi-player maps are butter smooth though.

Yeah I've learned my lesson. I don't upgrade drivers unless they provide a subsantial increase in performance, which the BF3 beta drivers did. So I'm sticking with them until further notice. If anything wouldn't the higher resolution of your monitor warrant your cards using more of their available power. I do have every option on at ultra/max, but I am at 1080p like you said.

Why haven't you tried MP?

Could simply be the difference in frame rates. If he's using v-sync to cap at 60 he's going to have less utilization than someone using a 120hz monitor or running without v-sync.

Yeah I used to think like that aswell I don't know why I ditched that same principle and upgraded to these drivers.

The problem for me is that even if I turn on 2xmsaa and hbao my 1gb ram limit is going to bottleneck me before my cards hit 99% usage, which is what happens if I turn on said settings. It's a bummer but you can't compromise like that because the effect of heavily lacking vram is so bad that I rather swallow it and just have most settings on max instead of all.

I have tried mp but I thought I'd get SP out of the way before I really commit :D. Though first thing's first, I gotta get those bloody beta drivers again.

for single card stuttering with my GTX 580 I've found a fix for it. Go into the BIOS and disable Hyperthreading and the problem is completely gone. the fuck DICE?

I've only played 64 player matches so far, and at ultra the fps is below 30, I have to run the game at high in order to get a good enough framerate to the point where it doesn't cause me to get killed, it's still not a nice 60fps though.
It seems that if you run the single-player on a particular setting and are struggling to maintain your target frame rate, you will have to bump it down a notch for multiplayer.

I have a 3.1 GHz dual core processor with 4 gigs of ram and a Radeon 6770 and I play the campaign on high with HBAO on and 2x anti-aliasing (frame rate: 30-50) but I have to bump it down to medium for multiplayer, especially the 64 player matches.

Running BETA drivers without any hiccups so far (SP). Have vsync locked@60, didn't noticed any drops yet. 1080p/Ultra.

Can't play more than 20 minutes without the game freezing on me. Judging from the Battlelog forums I am not the only one. I would love a world where PC games work flawlessly on the first day.

Fuck man, I'm so worried about the stuttering issue. I (still) can't play Deus Ex 3 because of the same issue. I want to play my games :-/

At least we can expect a patch from DICE, right? Don't they look after their community well?

Check your system RAM usage. I got froze on a bunch of huge 64p maps with setting mixed high to ultra. I checked some graphs and it probably blew my RAM threshold.

System RAM was 3.9/4.0
vRAM was 1009/1024

I've never had a game come close to cutting it this close. Just like BC2 before it killing duel cores CPUs, I think BF3 is going to kill 4GB system RAM rigs. :(

I upgraded for BC2, so off to Newegg I go.

Anyone wanna trade some DDR3 for a really nice 275 GTX? PM me.

Those benches in the OP are so shitty. No one with a 460 is interested in performance on Ultra (because it just ain't happening).

What's more important is how it runs on High!

Running perfect for myself

Original BF3 beta driver
AMD 6850
E8400 (stock)
4GB RAM

Pretty much constant 33-36FPS
Lowest iv seen it drop is 25.. so no stuttering

1080p medium settings.

I know nothing about VRAM.

Is there a way to clean out your VRAM before starting a game?

Haha No.
You GPU clears out whatever it doesnt need.

Cleaning out your Vram will leave your screen blank......

For anyone who is remotely interested, made some some final adjustments/tweaks that I'm REALLY happy with considering past performance in alpha and beta. Did somekind of "gameplay" benchmark run, where I had inspector up and running ingame while fraps just had the counter up in the corner.

The logg is from a run on :

5 minutes of Damavand Peak large conquest, 64 players shooting everything to shit in the tunnels. Settings used : Everything max ultra/enabled except HBAO, MSAA and texture setting is high instead of ultra, @2560x1440.

Fraps only showed one dip below 60 and that was a tank blowing me up with tons of smoke.
Log shows 75% on each gpu and 90% vram usage, so there's headroom incase things get even worse.

lhCxl.png

In other words. MSAA kills performance/vram, HBAO kills performance for the slight effect added and having texture quality on ultra isn't feasible with only 1gb vram @ 2560

560 ti sli @ 980 mhz
2600k @ 4.5
Latest WHQL drivers
D3doverrider OFF, v-sync enabled ingame ( don't know if this was the cause of the stuttering, which is now thankfully absent )

So I got to check this out running on a machine with a E6600, and needless to say, it's unplayable with everything turned low/off. Horrid framerates all around, yet it's a minimum spec. Not sure why they put that as a min spec.
