I just want someone to go hands-on with it and the games they showed (Zelda, Mario Kart, Mario, Splatoon), and confirm that the framerate holds up on the handheld.

Nah, the Wii U was also trying to push its "asymmetrical gameplay" thing, which....the sales showed that no one cared about. Switch's message seems much more clear and like something that there may be a market for.

I'm confused when people say this is like the Wii U but better. I guess it's a greater realization of off-TV play, but otherwise, there's no dual screen gameplay. It's either a traditional single-screen home console experience, or a single-screen handheld experience.

I think the Wii U comparisons are made because in the end for many owners the gamepad was nothing more than off-tv play i.e what the Switch would be if you're not playing on a tv.

When it was used well it was really good, but even some first party games offered minimal usage, look at Tropical Freeze, even Mario Kart 8 offered nothing worthwhile.

WHIch is great.

Dual screen was a bad idea from the start.

See that Church over there? You can play Dark Souls there under the protection of Jesus. You'll need it.
*Neiteio goes to a cathedral to play Dark Souls Switch. Despite being in the church, Neiteio's character is crushed by Ornstein and Smough.*

*Neiteio turns to a statue of Jesus*

N: "Hey Jesus, I thought you'd protect m—"

*The statue of Jesus is distracted playing its own Switch*

N: "Hey!"

*The statue of Jesus is doing the Reggie shrug*

Jeebus, pls do not forsake Neiteio.

since we were talking about this earlier, in this picture it really does look like the visible screen will color-match the game or something.

Might just be a video thing, but yeah.

Random side-note: thank you for this stillshot.

I'm comparing the console+dock's height to the nearby amiibos' heights, trying to determine if I can fit the Switch in a certain space on my entertainment center. Looks promising.

Big reveal event in January/before release maybe, not just a direct?

I'd assume so, especially since they have a lot of other things to reveal about it besides games. UI, how the OS works, how online works, if apps like Netflix and Youtube will be on it, etc. So it'd make sense to have an event similar to a PS4 or Xbox One reveal that we saw at the beginning of 2013, and there would be plenty of time for partners to announce games in such an event.

I hope they port some WiiU games like Pikmin and Mario 3D Land onto this thing.

Instead of porting Pikmin 3 they'll probably just release Pikmin 4

cause nintendo would never delay (make weird decisions) ever!...

If it was going to be delayed they would've just said 2017 instead of reiterating March 2017 again. A delay at this point doesn't seem possible.

It's funny: Enhanced ports may seem uninspired, but when you're talking about Mario Kart 8 (the BEST) and Splatoon and possibly Smash, it suddenly makes this the most appetizing must-have system in pretty much ever.

I'm eager to bring Mario Kart into the office, deploy the adorable lil' kickstand, detach those joy-cons for 2P, and proceed to blue shell my coworkers... TWICE.

The fact I can easily bring this into the office and market show it to friends and coworkers is pretty cool. Maybe this sort of thing will help it catch on.

Enhanced ports make a ton of sense too when you consider how terrible Wii U sales are.

Mario Kart 8 is so good that I seriously wouldn't mind them just building on that foundation forever (or at least for a generation or two). This way we don't lose any of our favorite tracks, characters, etc. We just get MORE of them. So yes, by all means, treat MK8 as a platform!

I think smash should be treated in a similar way.

I totally agree, just making a comment about perhaps Wii U's biggest attempt at something unique and why it failed, but it satisfied a "problem" that no one actually had. I think of Switch as kind of an amalgam of Nintendo's recent consoles, taking some of the best ideas of each with improvements - the separated controllers from Wii without the unorthodox button layout, the portability of Wii U without being tethered to the console, etc.

Oh, definitely. Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros = platforms they should keep expanding, rather than resetting with sequels. Just take MK8 and SSB for WiiU/3DS and keep adding to them on Switch. That's what I want.

Mario Maker is something I wouldn't mind seeing treated like a platform, too, but rumor has it they had difficulty getting it to sync up with the WiiU version. Then again, the 3DS version split off to to be its own thing, so I don't see why a Mario Maker Switch couldn't be a thing. It might not be able to communicate with the WiiU version, but it could still have its own online pool of users, and keep expanding with new content from there.

Splatoon is something I wouldn't mind a proper sequel for at some point. Mainly so we can get a new campaign and a new hub world. But I'll happily take an expanded version like the one we appear to be getting, as well.

I really wish Tropical Freeze got the port treatment. It's another amazing game that needs to be rescued from the Wii U abyss.

It's funny to me how it did literally NOTHING with the gamepad lol. Literally nothing.

I agree, and as you said earlier the message with the Switch was much clearer. Especially when you compare it to the disastrous Wii U trailer which pretty much played out like the Wii U was just a new controller for the Wii lol.

It's funny because I tend to buy Nintendo consoles regardless because I enjoy some of the games, but the Switch is the first in a very long time that I've actually had a desire for. The last Nintendo console that gave me a similar desire was the N64.

Yeah that sums up what devs thought about the gamepad. They couldn't even be fucked to throw a logo on the gamepad while you played, it was just a black screen lol

Yeah being able to play through Returns without nonsense waggle controls or a shitty 30 FPS would be grand. Bring over the bonus content from the 3DS port as well.

At this point, the Wii U is basically a secret console. So we're all in on it with Nintendo. They will re-release Mario Kart 8 as Mario Kart Switch, and we'll all smile as it's a massive mainstream hit.

The Smash 4 port could have a "Switch" mode where you pick two characters, and can hotswap them MVC style.

It's more like it's what people thought the Wii U was, then had to have Nintendo explain to them that they were wrong and it wasn't that cool.

I'd buy it for Returns at 60 fps (like the Wii version) and with the extra content and button to roll (like the 3DS version). And remastered in HD now since it's on Switch.

Plus if it was delayed into the Fall they have to battle it out with Scorpio which would be a bad idea. March/April timeframe is perfect as the slow summer months approach.

Ahh - thanks!

It's going to be close, now that I've taken measurements and peeked at the dimensions article. I'm hoping that the dock can go horizontal..

And there's always part of me that hopes for Nintendo to release as many Collections for their franchises. With as huge a history as they have, making the backlog easily available should be a standard for their consoles going forward. No more of this "I hope ____ is released on VC" business.

Do you honestly think they will screw over physical disc owners with some sort of digital only BC? I know I'll be pissed since all my Wii U games are discs.

Calling it "backwards compatibility" is a stretch. But sorry, physical-only buyers, but one of the reasons people like buying internet-delivered content is its versatility.

If Nintendo says "hey, you already bought this game from us through digital distribution in spite of the lack of versatility that offered you on Wii U, so we're going to do right by you and not force you to pay full price again", either through a free download (new "Ambassador Program", anyone?) or a cheaper cost to upgrade for any new features added, wouldn't that be considered a good reason to buy their games that way and legitimize purchasing games with that method?

It will all depend on the data they have from the Virtual Console upgrade path from Wii to Wii U. That will likely influence their approach to this.

Something else that would be cool:

Bringing your Switch to a friend, plugging it into his dock and playing your games together.

Certainly possible.

I think once gamers see that PS4 Pro and Scorpio play all the same games as their current systems with a barely noticeable difference - many of the people who were going to upgrade to those consoles might now keep the current ones and buy a switch instead.

I know thats the situation I am in now as a PS4 owner.

Not gonna lie, this was not something I ever expected to be uttered on GAF. But it really does go to show where its market in the hardcore audience will come from.

I think my biggest frustration is that there is a HUGE misunderstanding about something here. Back when Iwata made the comments about unified os, android etc.. everyone (not right away but soon enough) embraced the idea of one only Nintendo console. And now, they have that .. hybrid home/portable console, so everyone think, this is what we get. And as such it can be awesome.

Except.. we have ABSOLUTELY NEVER heard anything from Nintendo about that. Everyone is thinking right now, on gaf, Hey Switch is awesome i'll play monster hunter and pokemon on it" but none of what Nintendo said goes in that direction. If anything, them insisting on the console being a home console means they don't want to cross the streams at all.

That's what i'm saying by being confused about its identity. Cause that's two entirely different things here. A console that will legitimately have the kind of generosity Nintendo portables have, in term of games, or a WiiU repeat with selected games, and Nintendo still having to output games for an other system, and we all know how that ends.

...

Nobody talk about anything. Nobody talks about the obvious irrefutable fact that if the screen is a touch screen, you won't be able to play.. say, phoenix wright, if such a game is on the switch, on your tv, cause there is no physical way to play a touch screen game with the dock on. This kind of thing..

The more i talk and the more i think we could have two different product based on the Switch. With a more portable friendly, dockless version for japan (also available here hopefully).

But to summarize my tough and my confusion, not knowing if the Switch will have a portable library, nor if it'll be, for example, available without the dock, makes it something completely unpredictable and unidentifiable for me. Those are HUGE matters. They change everything

I think your confusion comes from the idea that you believe a 3DS successor is in the pipeline.

Switch's reveal makes it more clear to me that Nintendo is actually going to give up on handhelds.

For a more rich experience with hardware controls and depth and what-have-you, they will put those experiences on the Switch.
For more "handheld-like" experiences, they will go with mobile.

The only reason Nintendo hasn't fully pulled the trigger is that their non-Pokemon mobile efforts haven't come to market yet and they will likely want to see how they pan out before they finally pull the trigger that will mark the end of "handhelds" as we have come to understand them.

My 2 cents, anyways, but the direction of the Switch actually makes more sense when you look at it through this lens.

That mock up for the Switch version of BotW looks cool though, recreated it.

That box art is HAWT.

Hamster on the support list makes me hope Nintendo lets them revive Virtual Console Arcade.

I sure hope so. VC should be offering the best experience for a type of game. Like, seriously, Street Fighter Alpha 2 on SNES being on VC should not be a thing!

I wouldn't be surprised if they used DVD or blu ray sized cases rather than 3ds sized cases, since they're really pushing "it's a home console!" In their marketing so hard.

The costs associated with doing so really don't help anything or anyone. Not consumers, not Nintendo, no one.

I wonder what the cost differences would be for Nintendo between DVD/Blu-Ray, 3DS or Vita sized cases for Switch games?

I partially break that down here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=192728798&postcount=557

The TL;DR version is: when you factor in the costs of shipping, shelf space at retailers, etc. and how many more can be shipped in a container, the savings are actually pretty substantial.

This is going to sell well.

Nintendo has learned from their mistakes.

Again, another thing I never thought I'd read in a Nintendo thread on GAF this soon after the reveal.

This thread keeps cracking me up.

I don't see how that's a laughable thought. If it can be done, wouldn't Japanese 3rd-parties like to offer their games on more than one platform in their home market for a change?

Well, Persona 5 is on both PS3 and PS4, two consoles with vastly different architecture.

If Atlus sees a market for P5 on Switch, it'll come.

Id wager the market is already there. The Switch market is also the 3ds market and Atlus has seen much success on that device.

Coupled with the fact that P4 was on the vita, I dont see why P5 isnt possible.

Nintendo has said repeatedly since the NS was revealed that they're not leaving the handheld business. I think it's safe to say a 3DS successor is coming in the future. My guess is that it will play all of the NS library as well. Makes sense, too as Reggie has stated that the NX was a platform.

I seen Dolphin emulator running on NVIDIA Shield TV. Some games run quite good and everything is in 1080p for Wii games.

If the NS is more powerful than Shield and we have Nintendo themselves make a emulator. I would be happy seeing Wii and Gamecube games in 720p. If Nintendo do this it would make NS a must buy.

The 3DS successor stuff is just to stave off investors who think Nintendo might be placing their bets in one basket. The Switch is what Nintendo is banking on and you will only see a 3ds successor type device if it fails to gain taction like the wii u.

Nintendo has said this same thing when the ds came out. The DS was a hit and the gameboy brand became no more.

Metroid Prime (my fav. game) and WWHD on the go please!

Guys, we could be a matter of months away from getting a system that plays all of Nintendo's first party games, gets most western and Japanese third party games, and all games can be played on the tv or on a handheld. Let it sink in.

Nah dude, the Joycons must be wireless. There's that bit in the reveal where the dude plays Skyrim on the plane, but he splits the joy cons off the Switch and holds them in both of his hands, like a Wiimote+Nunchuck thing.

I know. What I was wondering was if they were only wireless or if they also physically connected to the device to reduce lag and charge with the NS. Because the lights on the grip light up when they're slipped in I'm assuming there's also a tethered connection.

This could be the one to bring me back to the fold. If Nintendo comes with modern features that everyone else has then another hit could be on our hands. What OS is the system running? What's the app support looking like thus far? This is a modern console and Nintendo is a modern player subject to comparisons.

This is the first console I'm pumped for in a long time. The XOne was cool as was the PS4 but this feels like some space age shit. I can be at work playing Zelda? adlfhd!! *throws money at the screen* It has an actual controller like modern controller so Nintendo is coming for the core market. Come fight for my money Nintendo.

They should have announced it with the console then.

Zero reason for this. 5 months until launch and that wasn't a full reveal. Pointless to announce games so early.

Do the Joy Con pads use analog sliders or small analog sticks? Also hope they release a better looking Pro Controller at some point, the one in the trailer looks good functionality wise but it's really aesthetically bland.
