Bonus Round: Dissecting The Microsoft Press Conference

about the whole screen real estate thing, i dont know about anybody else but when i have something on my tv that isnt the program im watching i hate it

like a close caption box, captions, a little box in the coner, they all drive me freaking insane and take away from my immersion

i guess im not american so i wont get these features anyway

garnet is the man, fan since the early 1up yours days

alex had a point about how hes already in for the games, i know im going to have to pick up one of these to appease my halo and epic needs, aswell as whoever else they pay off for exclusives

i like andrea, way to much makeup imo (not that it matters)

You accuse him of repeating it too often and then demonstrate you don't actually understand the point he's making. He doesn't argue that it being software justifies any particular drm scheme, but that it being software lends credence to the claim that much of this has yet to be decided.

That doesn't follow at all. Only that they can change it, not that they are even thinking about it.

Well, 24-hour is only a problem if you can't use an internet connection where it's set up. Always requiring a connection adds additional problems on top of that, like if your internet is down, or Live is down, even for a short period.
It still turns the console into a constantly monitored, overpriced rental service.
Especially I, as a collector, will never touch this thing.

Geoff Keighley is a marketing tool, news at 11. His main audience of angsty 15 year olds gets what they want to hear, hence these clowns only have the balls to call Nintendo out on everything.

Based on the way this conference went down, I think Geoff needs to go after all execs at E3 the way he goes after Reggie every year. I seriously dont know why he lets them off so easy.

EDIT:
Regarding used games:

Garnett: According to Phil Harrison, its going to be the full price
Dude on the right: Wellllll theres a lot of speculation!

Phil Harrison wasnt speculating. Its a direct quote. Jeez

I think I have gotten used to it since the 'snap' feature is exactly the same in Windows 8.

That doesn't follow at all. Only that they can change it, not that they are even thinking about it.

Who said change? MS's claim is that they have nothing to announce and Geoff's point about it being software is that it's entirely possible nothing is finalized yet. The fact these things aren't hardware enforced but software enforced allows them the ability to not decide immediately. Agree or disagree but that's what he's saying.

Far better just to use you tablet.

They announced several (misleading) things already. It's far more likely that they are just fishing for a more palatable way to say it, or foolishly think it will all blow over when they show games.

I still think they're going to walk that back. 24 might have been their internal timeout, but everything they've spoken about is a truly always-online system. They may just double down on the always-online nature of the box.

They don't have to. "Always on" is layered in through "better with always online, now even in singleplayer, get your dynamic achievements now".

Read the script goddarnit. ;)

Because he serves as nothing but a hypeman, who masquerades as a journalist, for Sony and MS.

I'm fine with them having someone on to represent the bone. Just not when they do such a pathetic job of it. I'm sure he's a nice guy and all but some straight up worthless opinions there.

"OH i watch TV!! :D"
"i'm a HUGE Xbox fanboy!"

... And that's when i turned that shit off 'cus i know (and i knew) where this was going.

You can be a fanboy and still acknowledge faults. I can be a fan of the 3DS and still acknowledge the Vita is better in some ways.

This Alex guy is the worst.

Glad to see Andrea has calmed down. She used to be way too over the top for me, almost like she was acting.

If you have your system powered off a few days, decide to play a game and Live or you ISP is having issues, you can't play anything

that's a big anti-consumer problem

I think it's always connected, even when it's turned off (they mentioned something about that for never having to update a game), so that shouldn't be a problem as long as it's performing the check and resetting the clock. Unless of course you do turn the system fully off, in which case you are correct.

It will have already been decided long ago, they're just looking ways to spin what's decided to be palatable to the most people.

There is no way in hell that anything is going to change in a meaningful way. Contracts and agreements will have already been signed/agreed with developers/publishers on protecting their interests and resale rights/percentages for the trade in clusterfuck that Microsoft are currently trying to manage damage limitation for. Microsoft will not want to renegotiate those contracts they will just spend a little time sugar coating that and other nuggets of shit that they expect the consumers to swallow.

DRM check in time changed from 3 minutes to 24 hours is still DRM which ever way you try to spin it.

Actually, in the "family scenario" (which they talked about) they probably will layer in a few exceptions to the rule. Most likely (and this is entirely an educated guess (speculation)) something like - "on the first Console the Game is installed, up to three Accounts can play the game (and get Achievements) in singleplayer, as long as the main Account is not logged into Live at the same time (Coop not counted). It would fit the old "Save Slots" scenario, so gamers would like it.

Never forget. Its not digital distribution that is the problem, it is the new entirely made up rules and that there is nothing left to balance them out, when the last free market we had (used games market) doesn't have any leverage anymore on the long term price management of the offered products.

They announced several (misleading) things already. It's far more likely that they are just fishing for a more palatable way to say it, or foolishly think it will all blow over when they show games.

I think so too. Should be an interesting E3, to say the least.

For me, what I'm excited about is being able to have a game guide open on the side while I'm playing through Dark Souls 2 or whatever. Also Skype calls is a great use for this. Personally I make multiple Skype calls a week, both to my friends and my family across the country. I think having it be integrated is a natural step for them, but I'm glad it's there.

Overall, I thought this episode was okay. It didn't really have anything new that I didn't either think or talk about here on Gaf. We're still missing a lot of details about how the Live TV stuff functions with different devices, how exactly used games work, more clarification on the online requirement, etc... The conversation just leads into speculation when you start talking about those and it becomes a battle of the pessimists vs the optimists.

The one thing MS needs to talk more about is the games. Clarify the things above as well, but above all else, show off the games LIVE on the stage. If they can show off some interesting games of both new and old IP, then the real fun starts of everyone picking apart the launch lineup, and presumably talking about some of the big games that we'll get going into next year as well. I'm assuming that their E3 event is going to be huge. After all, they're going to be announcing their full launch lineup most likely (maybe save a surprise for PAX or TGS or something), but they'll also have to talk about the games that we'll be getting before next E3 as well. It's going to be exciting.

Based on the way this conference went down, I think Geoff needs to go after all execs at E3 the way he goes after Reggie every year. I seriously dont know why he lets them off so easy.

No, it is speculation still. The way I read the question and answer was what if you downloaded a game using your account (the person who bought it) on a friends Xbox and he wanted to play it when you weren't there (on the account of someone who did not own the game) that they would have to buy it full price. That would make sense, and it's the same as when you download a 360 game on someone else's Xbox. Just because I can download a game I own onto your Xbox doesn't mean that you will be able to play my game for free just because the bits are on your box. You will still have to buy it.

There are so many varied scenarios when you start talking about used games, lending, etc, and MS hasn't given us any of the details.

Can't say I disagree, as I'm also a collector. If Xbox One game truly do have a fixed lifespan, that will be so disappointing to me.

That's another issue. if its unplugged by mistake or something. On principal alone its anti consumer.

I like how when Garnett pointed out that no one watches live tv anymore (which is true) the other two didn't miss a beat and said, "But I watch TV!" You know, like that somehow nullifies his point. People are trending toward DVR/Hulu/Netflix and teens are on the Internet more than they watch television now. He was 100% right.

And also that lady saying "and not like Sony, who didn't show the box and didn't give any substantial detail about it".

WHAT! Did you fucking mute the entire PS Meeting?

Why is that NeoGAF, knows so much, and these people, so little? Are they ignorant by choice? C'moooooon.

Actually she said that unlike Sony, Microsoft showed how the console looks in substantial detail.

They actually did not reveal a lot about the actual console itself and it's OS. They decided to focus the message on games instead.

Its called "cloud processing". Its tHa FuTUrE, Bro! ;)

They shared the hardware specs as well. They just didn't show what it looks like (which is what the lady was talking about).

She was strictly talking about how the console looks there.

But I am also talking about the other hardware and software features of the system. Basically, both Sony and Microsoft decided to unveil both their consoles differently, which I personally think is fine.

I, for one, think that the reveal was actually quite good and achieved exactly what they wanted it to achieve (and I'm not talking about all the hatred and rage) ... and I don't even care about TV or sports ... but I still think it was quite good. I even did a little write-up on that whole thing, but - for obvious reasons - can't really post the link here.

They probably have lobbied to have used games restricted, but both manufacturers also potentially gain from it as well.

Who usually bitch and moan about Used games : Publishers. It comes from them. Putting Restrictions on consumers = Less sales. It's fuckin simple. Why the hell do they think all this shit will make it better?

Dragon Ball boy is crazy.

Haha, motherfucker looks like he's straight outta Dragonball Evolution!

Hang on....you are claiming 100% that people only watch DVR tv these days? Jesus.

So what OS the PS4 is running is more important to you than what type of hardware it has? Because they talked about the latter.

Everything out of Alex's mouth grates my ears. It HAS to be big to be future proof.

1)It is already inferior to the PS4 power wise and it is behind most PC's since it has to run 3 useless OS at the same time.
2) Does this mean the PS4 is going to actually be the monolith from 2001 A Space Odyssey? FOR ALL THE POWAH!

I, for one, think that the reveal was actually quite good and achieved exactly what they wanted it to achieve
They should really strive to achieve better things.

I honestly think there were several other ways they could've achieved the ends of introducing this console as a mass market Pay TV enhancer. I'd say the way they settled on was the worst possible.

Actually she said that unlike Sony, Microsoft showed how the console looks in substantial detail.

Yeah she then mentioned the controller and Kinect... well Sony showed the controller and the Eye, no box because it wasn't even finalised.

At least Sony showed games, no one mentions that.

Bar the poor PR afterwards, I thought it was fine - not great and not bad. I wasn't particularly bothered with the lack of games as E3 is right round the corner and the fact the system will play games is a given; I was more interested what else it can do. I can understand people being hugely disappointed with the unveiling if they were just interested in games, however.

This is my new favorite thing. People suggesting all of this bad Xbox One news is "speculation" when it came from the mouths of Xbox executives.

true ... but the thing is - this reveal was never meant to be about games ... and they even specifically said that before it even began. So I don't really know what people were expecting to see there.

I loved that, "What's in there!" I heard that the cpu might be 40nm? If thats the case it's for cooling reasons like thay one dude said.
