Breaking: Israel launches Operation Protective Edge against Hamas in Gaza

Status
Not open for further replies.
"Look at how few innocent people Israel is killing by responding to violence with more violence! They're basically saints!"

The fact that the apologists actually think this makes for a convincing argument to support the notion that Israel is "humanitarian" in their efforts really does say it all.

Another victim of Israel's war machine.
Israel is at war, where innocents die sadly. That is an unavoidable reality of war (try and find a war where there has never been innocents caught in the crossfire).
...I feel sick even quoting that, but I felt like the juxtaposition needed to be made. Those who talk about "the unavoidable reality of war" seem to forget they're talking about people.

Hopefully his family is alright.

NPR just broadcasted a segment where there multiple stories of people trying to run from Israeli rocket fire only to get hit by it anyway.

I

Would you be willing to attribute AT LEAST a majority of these deaths to human shields and living in areas where rockets are being fired from?

Because I'm getting the sense from those making this argument that those two reasons are behind each and every single civilian casualty in this conflict
I'm blaming Hamas for taking advantage of the Palestinians by taking refuge in the same areas they do. Doesn't mean all civilians die this way (again, I admit there are trigger happy idiots in every army) but Hamas created this situation where the chance of civilian casualties, dramatically increases.

If the Palestineans were given their demands and organizations like Hamas continue, wouldn't they weaken due to popular support for them drastically decreasing in that situation and even a portion of these organizations even splitting off and stopping these activities?
Dunno. Nor do I think Israel should risk it. A simple demilitarization of the Palestinian Authority would keep everyone happy. No weapons means no extremists can overthrow a government.

...I feel sick even quoting that.
Are you intentionally being ignorant?
Maybe you should read what war is. Or avoid this thread altogether if you can't handle it.

I think some of you are trying to put me in a position of praising war or something. I'm sorry to tell you it's not working. I'm only taking the rational outlook on life.

At this point, this just sounds horribly inhumane. Given the population density, anywhere Hamas might go, there will be civilians.

But it's pretty clear the blame the victim mentality is too entrenched here to evolve into something less monstrous.

The West Bank is much bigger than Gaza. Like a good 10x bigger.
If Israel can barely stop Hamas in Gaza, imagine what would happen in a territory much bigger.
Israel needs to withdraw their settlements but you can't deny they're right to feel paranoid.

That's why I think a Palestinian state needs to agree to a weapons ban. They need to prove to Israel "we're not going to break into your country every 3 months and bomb a bus".

No, they do not need to bend over backwards at every Israeli demand to get their inalienable fucking rights. The only thing they need to do is sign a peace treaty with Israel and perhaps agree to a small contingent of NATO troops to monitor the borders.

How long would they stay there and how effective would it be?

There are plenty of UN soldiers in Africa but lots of bad things still take place.

So really, what good does an invasion do if it literally hasn't worked time after time?

Well it gives the IDF some live moving target practice I suppose. Too bad they've "only managed to kill 200 people“ and counting. They're "not very efficient" after all.
I mean the kids especially are cheating since they're smaller than your average target and thus harder to hit

I didnt say UN soldiers. I said NATO soldiers, who, unlike UN soldiers, will act decisively should the situation call for it. It's not an ideal situation. Lord knows, the Palestinians shouldnt have to deal with more foreign troops on their soil, but since Israel doesnt trust the UN to keep the peace, a NATO contingent, commanded by a US general, is a reasonable alternative.

And the fact of the matter is, NATO troops would be less likely to commit the kind of rampant abuses the IDF is responsible for in the West Bank.

These periodic outbursts of violence aren't intended to end the violence from Hamas or Islamic Jihad or whoever once and for all. They're intended to "mow the grass." As long as the violence is at a low level, there is minimal pressure for a final settlement and colonization of the West Bank can continue.

There is nothing unavoidable about the current attack on Gaza.

You trivialize the deaths of over 200 people as "collateral" in an attack that won't accomplish shit.
You're twisting my words and worst off, adding news ones too.

I never claimed collateral or wanted to trivialize anything. There's been more trivialization being flung from the other side than not (i.e, the countless nazi/warsaw ghetto/concentration camp comparisons mentioned in this thread).

I also have no idea what you mean by "There is nothing unavoidable about the current attack on Gaza.". I can't make sense if this is a statement about war or not.

By the way, speaking of the death toll: IDF has tanks, artillery, fighter jets, cruisers but only 200 people die. Yet more civilians have died in surrounding middle east conflicts, usually having nothing more than ak-47's or home made bombs.

Again, what does this say about the war in Gaza? Either Israel must have some really shitty weapons or they fight like stormtroopers.

Or maybe, Israel does attempt safeguarding civilians from danger.

Israel positions itself as the shining light in the middle east then excuses itself by suggesting "at least we're better than these guys" If Israel wants to be taken seriously as the only true democracy in the region it HAS TO hold itself to a higher standard than the countries around it. It cannot point at Syria and say "at least we're not that" while maintaining a moral high ground. If those are the conditions required to think that Israel is acting in a moral and responsible manner then yes, for a middle eastern dictatorship Israel is doing quite well. If you Israel on the standards of a modern democracy, however, then it is failing.

I doubt anyone is saying IDF is engaging in genocide. If anyone is saying that then they arr wrong. What they are saying is IDF is not a beacon of truth and upholder of civilian life and justice as you are making them out to be. IDF engages in ruthless warfare. It will harm civilians if it achieves the mission objective. It will level civilian homes and infrastructure as a means of intimidation and fear. Look up Dahiya doctrine.

The term you are looking for is 'ethnic cleansing'.

Yeah, I think I'm just about bored now. Whitechocolatekrispies was right. Far too many posts that attack Israel for no reasons.

I said civilians die in war and you responded like you had no idea what it was and you horribly quoted it out of context.

This is the stuff that has me bored. I'm being made a villain for other users enjoyment. If someone else takes over, good luck.

You're fine. If anyone is getting on your case it's because we all have ruffled feathers over this. Don't take it personally.

Tell me what it looks like then.

When somebody can't tell the difference between trivialization and analogical reasoning yet wilfully trivialises human life without a second thought you know you're just dealing with a scripted mouthpiece.

And we all know what the final piece of the script is; when all else fails play the victim and, preferably, start labelling any opposition as anti israeli or anti semitic

Yeah see, this is the other one. You're assuming I said anything praising the IDF for killing or "them looking better than other genocidals". It's not.

I'm pointing out the weapons Israel have are far more dangerous than any ak-47. Yet something is getting in the way of all these deaths if Israel acted without zero restraint.

If someone quotes this and says "nah, you really want dead Palestinians" then I truly quit.

Yet every single one of your posts for the last 5-6 pages have openly attacked Israel under the guise they actually want to kill civilians, while completely downplaying, ignoring and defending the extremely well documented and proven tactic of Hamas' propaganda and lying.

You can laugh all you like at Israeli pitiful propaganda, however they have ten fold more credibility that Hamas has. Yet you ignore this jumping on every image, every tweet, every fb post as if pure fact. Hamas are a lying propaganda machine and you do not acknowledge this with any of their claims.

Hamas wants this invasion because they want picture of dead children to post. That is a fact. It is their primary tactic to fight against Israel. Dead children and dead families and dead Palestinians. That is what they want.

That is who they are and that is why the world ignores their plight. They are the reason Israel responds, they are the reason Israel bombs, they are the reason people die. They know this and they want this. Dead Palestinians.

Yet you only want to call Israel out. It's disgusting.

Israel has a right to defend itself. To defend itself against lethal rockets. It doesn't matter how infrequent they hit their targets. All it takes it one. One rocket is a declaration of war and in war people die. This is a fact.

Hamas does not have the right to terrorise civilian populations because of a territorial dispute. Settlements are bad. But firing rockets into Israel are on a whole new level of international criminality. The Palestinian people have more than enough support to stop settlements in the West Bank. But their cause is flattened by violent acts against civilians. End of story.

Settlements do not justify terrorist behaviour. There is never a justification for terrorism. It is utterly despicable people in this thread are trying to justify the indiscriminate attack and attempted murder of a civilian population.

And no targeted military action from Israel is not terrorism. It is war, and in war people die. Israel has a uniformed army. Israel attempts to follow the Geneva convention, it follows unprecedented tactics to minimise civilian casualties, yet innocent people will still die. This is a fact of war and if Hamas is more than happy to start one, then they share just as much of the blame for their deaths. So yeah Israel royally fucked up by killing those children on the beach. Yet I only see condemnation for Israel, never once is Hamas blamed for constantly dragging their land into conflict.
Great post.

If the death toll was still the same with a country that had no buildings and all the civilians were spread out on the lawn, I would believe the Israeli Army wouldn't want to protect people.

But Gaza is dense and full of buildings. Hamas hides there. Hamas rarely comes out of there, and the times they do, it's through a tunnel. It's a stretch to say Israel can fight a war and miraculously end up with zero casualties.

If they did, every country would look up to Israel. They would want to know "how did those IDF guys manage to avoid hitting all those civilians when Hamas was even standing right next to them".

I suggest you start reading some Norman Finkelstein, his language can be a bit crude but his is bullet proof in historical analysis.

Note: The following is not about this particular poster, but behavior engaged in by many posters, in many threads. Sorry Shinobi.

This is not helpful. Responding to questions and assertions with image macros in a serious conversation -- and I think you'll agree this should be a serious conversation -- especially when the poster has already been engaged by others in a serious manner, just pads the thread and wastes everyone's time. If you have a response, respond. If you don't, then keep it to yourself.

It would be nice not to have to scroll through fifteen of the same quote, with varying gifs and what the fucks. It also contributes to posters feeling dog piled, without producing anything of value for the discussion. It's not good for discussion, and I encourage you not to do it further in serious threads.

Ironic

And no targeted military action from Israel is not terrorism. It is war, and in war people die. Israel has a uniformed army. Israel attempts to follow the Geneva convention, it follows unprecedented tactics to minimise civilian casualties, yet innocent people will still die. This is a fact of war and if Hamas is more than happy to start one, then they share just as much of the blame for their deaths. So yeah Israel royally fucked up by killing those children on the beach. Yet I only see condemnation for Israel, never once is Hamas blamed for constantly dragging their land into conflict.

Actually you will find examples of it in this thread (or the old one) from the same people who are shitting on Israel.

Posts like this would carry more weight if this entire go around was not predicated on a few things:

1) A blatantly fabricated pretext by Israel to use as justification to aggravate Palestine

There is zero proof that those three kids where interacted with Hamas in any way. No one, not even the US state department, says that there is no evidence of this.

2. Hamas formed a Unity Government with the Palestinian Authority on the terms of the US and EU, which cornered the Israeli government.

Despite the fact that the unity government would weaken the influence of Hamas, the Israeli government tried to undermine this at every turn. Including trying to demand the the US and EU have no dialogue with it. Can you argue otherwise?

3. Israel does not want peace.

Do you have any links to articles or book recommendations? I've seen him debate but I haven't had a chance to read up on his research.

Right on cue.
Heh, working in shifts it seems.

Anyway, I have yet to read a good argument in this thread why a disarmed Gaza is a good idea apart from driving them out of their 'land' aka the dog shelter that Istael built for them much easier, like in the West Bank.

West Bank Palestinian's are getting shafted for playing nice, what proof is there Israel will suddenly treat those people in Gaza after Hamas is gone (and the west bank) nice as they just see them as dogs that need to be put away?

Hamas is just an apology for crowd control, not to mention a direct result of Israels policies towarda 'lesser humans'(as they obviously see them)

Just makes me sad to have to one day say 'told ya' when these people either have to ultimately leave their homes (if allowed) or go extinct.

I mean, the US murders people half way across the globe with less collateral damage than Israel manages against Gaza. How is that possible? Israel has probably tripled the civilian death toll of the drone war over the past 2 years in 2 weeks.

If Israel is going to continue to oppress, blockade, and illegally take over Palestinian land, what choice do the Palestinians have other than fighting back? Should they lay down and let the steam rolling continue?

It's cause they don't care.
There's so much hate that if a some civilians are killed in a targeted strike, what does it matter?

This is it. By law the occupied have the right to defend and resist. In this instance Palestinians are the ones defending themselves. People tend to forget that the way the narrative has been skewed and twisted.

How many Palestinians are left in Israel? Like how's the population growth or decline?

Serious answer? Palestinian and Haredi (Fundamentalist Jews) birthrates have normalized in the last couple of years. It's still a bit above the secular birthrate but as of now there shouldn't be any foreseeable demographic changes.

This is something people don't seem to get. Regardless of Hamas' tactics, or who started the latest round of violence.

This is the state of things, Israel is the aggressor, they are the invaders, they are the oppressors. If Palestinians simply stay quiet they will either be driven out or assimilated into Israel.

This is the really the crux of the whole issue, at least from the side of the Israeli extremists. Give Palestinians their own state, let the refuges come back, and very quickly you'd have an Arab majority in the land of Israel.

Huh? Giving them their own state avoids an arab majority. When people talk of a "Two State solution" they don't mean like American states. They mean a country called Palestine existing next to the country of Israel.
