Breaking: Xbox and Microsoft reveal global price increases for consoles, accessories — and even games

Wow, they don't give a damn, competition is not part of their vocabulary anymore it seems, free reign for Sony to do whatever the hell they want as well, this gen is a mess...

You can clearly see how multinationals are spreading costs of US imposed tariffs to the rest of the world. It f...ing sucks. As an Aussie. I don't want to be paying more for retarted decisions made by US Administration.

They did say that series x is their Pro console...

Also can I point out how stupid it is for people (seeing it a lot on the Reset thread; dunno about here) going "Sony Too™"? How about just focusing on the company that's ACTUALLY announced their pricing changes, instead of pretending you're Nostradamus.

Because going "Sony Too™" isn't a justification for why Microsoft are doing it (or announcing plans to) right now. What a weak way to try justifying acceptance (or even tolerance) of these companies increasing prices as the gen goes on, factors notwithstanding.
Silly take. There is zero point in pretending like Sony won't absolutely be following suit, in kind. It will happen. There's no question whatsoever. Sony raised prices across the board a few years ago due to pandemic supply chain economics, and they absorbed it and ate it in the US in order to avoid risking sales. Xbox has held firm on pricing all along until now (we're in Year 5 of this console gen). Sony will not simply eat it again, not when their two major competitors are both publicly listing their prices increases in the span of a month apart form each other. Though I'm sure they're enjoying Nintendo and Xbox taking the bad press, so that when they inevitably do the same, it won't be covered as negatively. It's smart, that's for sure.

Sometimes I wonder what the fuck they are thinking over there.

They're tapping out of the hardware biz. They know nobody is gonna buy these and they don't care. Now they want to sell PS gamers games for $80 plus tip and seduce PC bros to gamepass which will undoubtedly go up as well.

I've been gaming for a LONG time, and this is the first console generation in memory where the aging hardware was sold for MORE at the end of the generation than it was at the beginning.

This is just pure greed! If cost of manufacturing become cheaper as time goes on, then at the very least price should stay the same right now. Companies are taking tariffs and economy as an excuse to become richer.

Sadly, people don't care and fly in droves to buy them anyway! The Switch 2 should be failing miserably, but people are like: But the NES is more expensive taking into consideration inflation. This just BS. People didn't need to have that amount of money then, and purchasing power was much much more, than today.

Pricing a console with lukewarm( and that's being generous) market demand above the market leader certainly qualities for #thatsaboldstrategycotton. Pricing their consoles above the equivalent PS5 systems defies all logic, I don't give a fuck how 'global economics' play in. If someone was fence-sitting a Series X, raising the console $100 is going to push them towards a purchase?! Lol, LMFAO even. What the fuck??!?!?

What the fuck is a next gen console going to cost? $1000?

Likely $649

How did Nintendo's Switch 2 pricing give Microsoft cover to massively over inflate their console prices in any way?
MS i think are in the worst position to reducing the impact of the tariffs.

Nintendo and Sony have been making moves, MS atleast publically haven't said a word on what they are doing to reduce impact which makes me think they didn't really do anything.

Are you being serious? You don't understand how Nintendo leading the charge of sweeping across the board increases for hardware and software due to tariffs/ current market conditions a month ago has given Xbox and PS cover to follow suit? In what way is that unclear or difficult to grasp?

A dead Xbox would certainly be better than this.

Greedy ass corporation. No value, no quality, yet paving the way for a ruined industry in which we will eventually be priced out of our hobby

Fuck MS.

Gamestop knew.
Yep. They were taking in insane trade-in credits for the Series X last week. Someone knew something.

Edit: For clarification, Gamestop wanted to increase their own refurbished supply of Xbox series Xs so that they could sell them for ~$500 and hugely undercut the price increased "New" consoles.

Now, getting a used Gamestop Xbox will be the best buy, for many ppl.

the problem is xbox is already a product no one buys, what nintendo does with its wildly popular console wont cover shit for microsoft.

Wtf usually when a console is struggling they go on sale ☠️
I know this is a non-serious post, but consoles "going on sale" isn't a thing and hasn't been for like 7-8 years. The cost of building them no longer dramatically decreases during the lifespan of a console cycle. Hence why nothing has gone down in several years. Including Nintendo. The economics are nothing like what they were back in 2012 or earlier.

Right. I made the mistake of assuming everyone commenting in the thread is interested in having a thoughtful discussion. That is absolutely my bad.

Sony has raised prices zero in the US so far. Now are are Mee tooing Sony before they even COPIED MS' greedy move? At the very least wait until the much smaller and poorer Sony raised their prices instead of jumping out in front and taking the brunt of the pushback.

Facts. It's really annoying TBH, and you can tell it's a coping mechanism by those people to try justifying acceptance for what MS are doing raising their prices. If or when SIE actually increase their console, peripheral & game prices, THEN people can voice their anger or whatever. But trying to do it preemptively as a cope just looks sad.

Everyone who thinks this is tariff related, do you think when the trade war is over these prices will go down?

LOL, they won't.

That's the frustrating part. Maybe they do sales every once in a while, but actual permanent price drops? Thing of the past.

Micrishaft is supposed to be supporting this console by paying for part of it. That's how a subsidy works and why we have had awesome consoles over the years. It wouldn't surprise me if the whole thing wasn't a big loss at MS already and they just don't like throwing good money after bad.

Here's the worst part. Next gen we have been promised a steam machine from MS as their main platform. With no subsidy and no 30% store commission, how much do you think that son of a bitch will cost? This move will doom the Series to obscurity outside of the US for at least the rest of this gen and in the US it will be significantly diminished. If GTA6 releases this year it will be glorious for Sony.

There are people like JosephFantazy & SeanML (or whatever their names are) on Reset deluding themselves thinking the next Xbox console-like system will be $599. You can't help folks like that except with a slap of reality. That device is going to be at least $799; it won't be a traditional console so why would they take do that type of pricing model?

MS aren't interested in subsidizing gaming hardware anymore, because they're finished with the traditional model. The blanket of tariff trade wars just gives them an opportunity to further shift away from that business model.

...at least in terms of hardware. The new game prices? That's just profit-driven greed, but it's not like they're alone in that (hello Nintendo 😁)

Tarrifs from my understanding only apply to the assembled BoM cost (i.e MS's break even cost), NOT the retail price. So if it costs MS $300 to build a Series X, the tarriffs are levied on $300, not $500.

Increases in the BoM & assembly costs would still be reflected in higher MSRPs though, if they want to retain the same margins. Also gotta consider shipping costs; those get tariffed too.

Because 1 is a new product with hardware and software that people want.

The other is a failed project with a third party first party offering which has been in free fall for years at the current bargain bucket prices.

So again? How does Nintendo pricing their products accordingly allow Microsoft to hike their own prices in this way?

Hope that's easy for you to grasp.

The 2TB Series X is a special edition

Mainline console is $599
What's special besides it being 2TB? The next gen console will probably also have that amount of storage. And even if you want to go off the main console price, I doubt they're only jumping $50. What technical leap next gen do you think they'll achieve and only charge $50 more? The current gen is like 2018/9 hardware and they're charging $80-120 more, as if economies of scale no longer exist now.

These pricepoints exist for a reason, to condition the market to what you can expect in 2-3 years.

The worst part about the tariffs is that the rest of the world has to pay for the absurd trade war started in the U.S. Tariffs should be paid by Americans, not the rest of the world.

Most games are 80-150GB

What a crazy time we live in. Guess my days of waiting to up a console cheaper are over.
I could have told you that at the ps5 launch. I laughed at all my sucker friends who said they'd wait a few years to get ps5 at half the price while they continued to play their shitty PS4.

Wiped the smug look right off their faces when they ended up paying the same price as me years later. They said we were the suckers paying €500 for a ps5 😂

this is fucking mental, we now live in a world were 5 yr old tech goes up in price. Im expecting the next gen consoles to be between £800-£999 .
