Breaking: Xbox and Microsoft reveal global price increases for consoles, accessories — and even games

I've only read the first page of comments, but hopefully the Sonytoo deflecting will die down a little as of page two. Not likely, but one can hope.

OT: It will be interesting to see how the market responds to these price changes. There's also the fact that hardware and software can still be put on sale by individual retailers so perhaps people will start to wait for that more and more.

Edit: I was thinking a bit more about market response. If a product doesn't sell at a higher price point, a retailer will put the product on sale to move stock. If that were to occur, they would probably order less to replace the sold units. I'm curious about whether we'll see this in this situation - particularly since some of the price increases (eg. the consoles) are quite steep.

Tarrifs are doing this, since Xbox and controllers are all made in China

Not impossible, unless they're still making PS5s in the japan factory.
How did I have to scroll almost the entire first page before someone stated the very obvious answer which is tariffs 🤣. Tho people were warned with fair time to buy any shit they needed.

Sony raised prices elsewhere earlier this year but they haven't in the US. Not yet anyway.

The 2tb Galaxy edition series x consoles were only a limited run. They don't even make them anymore so why even post the price? Either way MS are complete and utter morons whose greed and stupidity knows no bounds. They can't sell consoles as they are now so they decide to increase the price anyway? Morons.
This is the obvious route, but people forget that sometimes when something is niche and you know you won't sell a ton of them you might as well price it higher to lose less/make more per unit.

Dropping the price might not really make much of a difference at this point for the brand.

Owning a PS5, Series S, X, and getting a Switch 2 at launch is starting to feel like investments lol. They will only cost more with time, not less lol
Why would you own a Series S and X?

They are not in a position to raise prices. They should reduce the price now to sell all they got before next gen starts.
See above.

I sometimes use a like as a gesture to the poster that I appreciate them contributing.

I don't get the impression that the people who liked the OP are Xbox fans expressing enjoyment over prices increasing.

Same. It's not necessarily approval so much as appreciation for a topic to discuss too.

Already seeing the usual cacophony of "lol tariffs" on socials. Looks like tariffs will be the new corporate excuse for greed. Tariffs aren't making the hardware this much more expensive, and it certainly isn't a justification for raising game prices.

This is Microsoft (probably intentionally) putting the final nail in their hardware coffin and following Nintendo's new pricing model as a publisher.
Depends on what the final tarrifs are. If they are 100%+ then they absolutely will products this much more expensive.

You can directly go and check the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS) and see that no Tariffs are listed for videogame consoles under heading "9504" section 1 (Section 2 is for N. Korea, Belarus and Cuba).

So, this isn't at all predicated on Trump's tariffs. This is just MS's opportunist greed, plain and simple.

If Sony doesn't follow suit in the US, then this is by far the worst mistake Microsoft has ever made.

The "Sony too" people better hope that happens. If it doesn't, this is a huge disaster for you.

On the other hand, as a Sony fan, this is amazing news for us.

If we raise prices, nobody complains because we were just following the others. If we don't we fucking win forever. It's a win/win for Sony fans. Win/win for everyone but MS.

Here's a deal I'll be down with:

£800 consoles
£100 AAA+ games

No MTX, Earn Everything
Quality software that's feature-complete and functional at launch.
Stop trying to subvert everything to the point that subversion becomes cliche.
Hall effect sticks as standard and a good console UI/UX.
Commit to maintaining -- and maintaining access to -- the entire legacy library.
No more aliasing, minimal temporal break up, proper frame pacing and sliders for post-fx like chromatic aberration/film grain rather than on/off options.

Best they can do is £1000 minimum next gen Xbox but it plays Steam.

This has got me looking to get a ps5 within the next week before it jumps up to 600 usd.

Especially if that may 15th rumor have any legitimacy behind it

You expect me to pay that much for your games when I can't even find them in stores?
Yeah, I was in a target the other day and they literally had like 2 Series S consoles in the case and no Xs at all (also extends to online where I can see other stores). I expect Xbox consoles to be hard to find in places like Japan (it was actually sort of hilarious to see the Xbox sections in places like Yodabashi when I was there as it would literally be like a 5-10ft section off in a corner of the game section and was like 90% GP ads and like 5 games) and Europe but to have a hard time finding consoles in the US is weird to me.

No. Certainly not. GPUs and some other components were exempt, but it was quickly made quite plain that specific tariffs for them were coming as well, later down the road.

At one of my Targets all of the Xbox games are now those downloadable cards without a disc copy in sight. Mostly really old games as well.

I was right again. Keep
paying rent for games :messenger_poop: :messenger_poop: :messenger_poop: :messenger_poop: :messenger_poop:

This is clearly going to lead to a snowball effect never seen before in game development. Brace yourselves....

"Maybe the children wil have 2 consoles instead of 30 consoles and maybe the 2 consoles will cost a couple hundreds of bucks more"

Same. There are more controllers than anything at mine. The PC gaming section has currently stolen probably 50% of what was originally Xbox.

Why the raise in EU then ?
Some are speculating they are raising the price globally to not put the brunt of the price increase on the US.
Definitely could be.
Also when your product isn't going to sell anyway you might as well make a little more per unit sold
