Hell is going on in here? Do not understand it, have been away too long clearly (financial year-end).

Random thoughts of the moment:

(a) despite not being an actual real lawyer I have found myself knee-deep in a manslaughter/medical negligence/probate/benefits case - I seem to attract these things in real life and not just on the internet. Rather a lot of fun in a fairly perverse way. Can I get a real solicitor to handle it? Nope, they all seem to specialise these days, so I get all the heavy lifting.

(b) in light of the above, thank goodness I have finished stocktaking the shop - reminds me, I must talk to the insurers. Got 60 kilograms of charms in stock, anyone want charms?

(c) decent budget

(d) roll on the summer. I want to walk to the shop in sunshine.

(e) fingers crossed for car MOT tomorrow morning at super-keen garage that wants the car at 8 am.

(f) Son of D, how's Dawlish doing? Still got transport problems south of us so I assume there is still a load of water around only nobody is reporting it. Old news I guess.

(Really mild, barely story related spoilers tagged.)

I finished TLoU: Left Behind, absolutely brilliant. The whole thing was taut, compelling and subtlety inventive. Some really clever narrative touches,
the photo booth, the imaginary arcade game, the costume shop,
just a few that spring to mind.

And the ending was really confidently delivered. Anyone who's played the main game probably knows what is going to happen at the end of the DLC, but it's so deftly handled. I was impressed that it told me both more and less than I expected.
Someone just posted this on Facebook. I'm really impressed by this sort of shit. Reminds me of the first time I saw KT Tunstall do Cherry Tree, or anything by Walk off the Earth

These were great Musha! Heart-Shaped Box was particularly good. She super talented, no doubt.

And she's kind of a dreamboat innit.

I know right? So fucking good. The NIN one gets such a funk on at the end too. She's wicked.

Musha_Soturi gets four Chow Yun-fat's out of a possible four Chow Yun-fat scale for that little gem of a post:

Random stuff, just finished XCom Bureau which was way more fun than I expected for a tenner. Roswell-ish alien lore and Mass Effecty shooty stuff and all together hitting the right buttons for me.

Also just managed to pour a quarter bottle of record cleaning fluid over my leg trying to smarten up some Sun Ra 7" singles on the turntable I've been restoring to functionality so if I don't post again it's because I was flammable.

PS4 Infamous bundle in the post, so any other PS4 game recommendations would be welcomed.

Arrow was great this week. I've lost track of most of DC's comics of late but this is great at scratching that itch.

I really like Motley Crue Girls,Girls,Girls and Wild Side are my favorites though. Van Halen I only like panama I can't stand jump personally. That Kleerup stuff is nice I listened to some others in the suggestion I pretty much enjoyed them all.
Dr. Feel Good is another great one. Jump was played to death, I don't like it either. The video is so stupid because it's impossible to make a one note bassline look bad ass in that era. Unlike Andrew W.K. who makes that piano key sing in Party Hard.

I Get Wet is the best song though, and this piano intro proves it. I love how that man plays the piano.

These are great! I love how she gets into it playing Closer.
I don't know NIN all that well, but Heart Shaped Box is an old favourite.
I could talk for hours about NIN. Tell me the type of sound you want and I'll have a suggestion.

Hey Phisheep, great to hear from you :) I always enjoy your updates, somewhat less dramatic and self involved than us youngsters! I hope you're well.

Cool. Lay it on me and I'll have a pogger tonight.

Listen to The Downward Spiral from beginning to end, it's real gud.

In other news, I forgot to download MGS before I left for work which is kinda a pain in the arse. At PSN speeds I'll most likely have it some time on Saturday afternoon...

Looking forward to spending two hours of my day playing and completing it tomorrow.

Fuck yeah.

Now, I love me some Fincher (even Alien 3) but I simply can't bring myself to watch The Social Network. I just can't do it.
Aww dude, it's really good man! I was reluctant initially, I hate Facebook, I just acquiesced so people stop looking at me like I touch kids.

But seriously, it's a primo movie. And it's barely even about "Facebook" per se, more about the people responsible for it's inception and the stresses it had on their relationships.

Such a good movie, I implore you to check it out. Even if it's just for that jaw-dropping score. (Check out "In Motion" too if you missed the link I posted a few days ago. Gotta leave it at least a month or two between reposts!)

At least it's not Xbox live you would be there for ages waiting for that to download.

I've never actually heard piano intros before they're not that bad at all. Different but good I like it.

I'm not sure if I could care about the people responsible for it though, which could hamper my viewing pleasure.

I thought it was over rated personally.

And I don't get what everyone's problem with Alien 3 was. Though I haven't seen it in a good while.

Me neither. I think a lot of people were pissed that Hicks, Newt and Bishop were killed off so unceremoniously. Loved it when the Tetley's Teabag guy gets his head chomped on.

I liked Alien 3, but I suspect part of the disappointment for some comes from it not being Aliens 2.

William Gibson submitted a script for Alien 3 : http://home.online.no/~bhundlan/scripts/alien3/gibson.htm

I didn't get on with Aliens even though it's clearly a well put together action flick. Much prefer the "one alien picking off people" deal.

William Gibson, eh? That's an amazing find. I'll check this out later, thanks!

Fincher all but disowned it after the studio interfered too much in post-production. It's the movie he's least proud of by all accounts.

I watched it a few months back. It's just boring man, that's it's biggest problem.

Aliens is the best movie in the franchise. Alien is a great sci-fi horror movie, but Aliens is one of the finest action movies ever made for my money.

Let's just not mention Resurrection eh?

I kind of liked that too. That said, given that I've just played through a game that's vilified as rubbish by most (Xcom Bureau) I suspect I am tolerant of anything with aliens in it though. I guess the litmus test for that would be Colonial Marines if I felt masochistic.

Also, wasn't it a mostly Joss Whedon script not long before Buffy?

Alien 3 like Psycho II are good horror films in their own rights, but the fact that they had to follow up classic films really hurts their reputation.

The 'Assembly'/Special Edition cut of Alien 3 from the Alien Quadrilogy is the only version you should watch. It really fleshes out the characters. The Alien 3 the documentary “Wreckage and Rage: Making Alien 3 is an must see too.

Yeah, tbh I think I give Resurrection more leeway than most people because of the Whedon/Jeunet authorship. I love how the film looks, Jeunet has such a good visual style. I think it was quite influenced by Hyperion originally too, was going to have a wooden spaceship etc. Also fun to see the parallels between the ship crew and what Whedon would later do with Firefly.

I know. Loads of people really rate it. I think my perception of it's coloured. When I first saw the trailer I thought it was a joke and now I can't shake the idea that it's "Facebook: THE MOVIE", even though it likely isn't.

It is. I'd usually not recommend a film to someone who already harbours hatred for it, but it's not that great a movie that I'd be doing it a disservice by warning you off it.

It's really not a big deal. You might like it as long you don't go in with high expectations or are in that mode where you are mentally reviewing it as you are watching it.

Aww yes! Can't get enough of Andrew WK. Never cared much for his music until I went to a live show of his and holy shit! I partied hard that night. Did you know he owns a nightclub in NYC Acrid? Curious to see what it's like.

Also, Andrew WK Piano intro songs and no mention of Never Let Down? tsk tsk :p

I think Jeunet's input was what left me so disappointed with it, it was a bit camp and theatrical. I love his style, Amelie and A Very Long Engagement are both absolutely gorgeous and extremely heartfelt movies, but they're also quite twee and full of whimsy.

He's basically makes live action cartoons, I'm not sure he was the best fit for a sci-fi movie about parasitic aliens that like to tear your face off.

I think it's simply the cinematographic style he uses, something about the contrast or colour correction maybe. The colour tones are so rich and deep. I can forgive a lot if a film is pretty.

Seeing this live was probably one of the best moments of my life

I think I would actually cry. When I was... uh, your age actually... they broke up and I got the recording of their final gig the versions of 1979 and Today had me blubbing like a Take That fan in 1996.

I was at their last UK gig. Trufax.

PS 8 bit - Pikmin 3 is pretty funny.

Alien is great.
Aliens is great.
Alien 3 is fucking dire.
Alien Ressurection is, eh, alright.

Haven't bothered seeing Prometheus.

Don't.

It's well acted, it looks good, it sounds good, but after about an hour it goes straight into what the fuck is going on territory. Which is a shame as the end has a great payoff, but it's not really worth the wait.

Edit: and Prometheus is good.

...and Prometheus is good.

It has glaring plot holes you could ride the Nostromo through, terrible dialogue, too many undeveloped threads, too many flat, uninspired characters, too many new creatures with new rules... I love Ridley Scott but this was a genuinely awful movie and the biggest disappointment of that year. Awful, awful film. Alien Resurrection was - unbelievably - a more satisfying and complete experience. I don't say that lightly either.

EDIT: The one thing I liked about it was how it flipped the original concept on it's head: where Alien was about femininity given destructive masculine traits, Prometheus gave it's masculine aliens feminine creative traits.

I guess it looked really good too...

Harumph.

I thought the cycles of creation and death in it were interesting, I loved the David character, the visual design and it's ambition to cram every single Big Science Fiction trope into two hours. I also liked how parts of it weren't explained.

I know I'm in the minority, but I really enjoyed it. I like flawed but interesting films about ideas (see also Tideland).

To each their own of course!

You're right about that, too. Three things then. I could've watched him alone on the ship for 3 hours. :)

Personally, I didn't find Prometheus' ideas all that interesting (well, apart from the inversion of the basic Aliens concept, as I mentioned). It was just a really bloated, confused, inconsistent mess from head to toe. They could've cut half the characters and no one would've noticed they'd gone. On the flipside, the original Alien is such a taut, tightly honed film that not only manages to revitalize some pretty tired horror tropes and explore some genuinely interesting and disturbing concepts about sexuality, but also be a damn good film. Idea films and good films aren't mutually exclusive.

If Terry Gilliam had directed Prometheus he would've made it work. He can do no wrong in my eyes :)

EDIT: WHAAAAAAA...? WHY ON EARTH DID SPLOATEE GET BANNED?!
