...sod it, despite better judgement I'll argue with this. A lot of this is more thinking in general, I don't think we have a huge issue with this thread.
Just because there are more men in the thread actively than women, doesn't make it a "male space". What does that even really mean? Your implication there is if women come here, well it's their fault if they don't like "men being men", going pwoaar over tits. The thread's a lot better than it has been in the past for that, though. Really, it should be a comfortable space for all genders - the primary thing that actually should be linking people here is some relation to being a Brit or in the country or whatever, not gender. Well, reasonably comfortable. Yeah we joke at eachother or be harsh, but that shouldn't be due to gender.
And men being men is a bit reductionist too - what, are we all the same, unable to control ourselves when it comes to women? The right attitude, tone, time and place, or with who you're discussing... it's not saying that pictures of pretty women are wrong, it's whether that this is the right place to be plastering them.
Mainly as I have a MASSIVE monitor at work which I'm definitely not reading this slacking on.
Oof, sorry if it looks like were moving on and I dragged things back.
Thanks for replying
Just because there are more men in the thread actively than women, doesn't make it a "male space". What does that even really mean? - I think I meant that if you have 30ish males in a thread, then it defaults to being a male space. If there were 30ish women and 2 men, I'd say it was a female space that men occasionally post in. The gender of the space doesn't exactly mean that it's destined to be all about boobs/makeup but I find it does have an effect on the general tone of a place.
Really, it should be a comfortable space for all genders - the primary thing that actually should be linking people here is some relation to being a Brit or in the country or whatever, not gender. - this is a good point, but how possible do you think it is to have a banter-y environment that is non-gendered in tone? Sometimes the topic is "I like this, do you like this too?", and today, one example of this was a girl. The first one I have seen since being in this thread.
And men being men is a bit reductionist too - what, are we all the same, unable to control ourselves when it comes to women? - I wouldn't say that, but I would say that SOME men like to look at pictures of fully clothed women and appreciate how they look. This is not explicitly against the NeoGAF ToS (which I have read thoroughly!) but I do appreciate your points here.
I think we should have an experiment. Brit GAF as an entirely gender neutral space for the rest of 2014. By this I mean
1) No talking about sex or genitals at all.
2) No gendered pronouns. Use human, ze, zer as pronouns.
3) No gendered discussions. No talking about the following subjects:
i) football
ii) cars
iii) makeup
iv) horses
v) feminism
vi) misogyny
vii) the colour 'pink' or 'blue'
viii) The Color Purple by Alice Walker
ix) guns or other phallic symbology
x) porn
xi) Yorkies
xii) underwear or genderspecific clothing
xiii) Benedict Cumberbatch
I think this would be tough but an enlightening experiment. What say you, Brit GAF humans?
