This is the real question that it seems nobody knows the answer to - how do you find a job that suits you? Pretty much everyone I know ended where they are by accident, with varying degrees of happiness. Sometimes it feels like once you're in your lane changing is an impossibility. Especially once those bills start rolling in...

This. This so much. By the time you realise what you want to do, you're already stuck doing something else.

I guess you could do what jimbor did, but you would have to have significant savings, or be made redundant with a nice package first.

Sucks :(

War Peaceman

You're a big guy.
Ugh, it's so shit how someone can make you feel so worthless in seconds.

EDIT: And yeah, I know, I know. I'm a misogynistic twat who deserved what he got and I only have myself to blame for actually expecting someone who claimed they like me to actually like me, blah fucking blah. Fuck this.

Jesus Christ. People call you a misogynistic twat when you say misogynistic things. It doesn't matter whether it is a 'facade' or whatever. For the purposes of other people, you are what you say and do.

You place too much of your self-worth in the opinions of others if your self-worth can be damaged so quickly. I am really, really glad that I am not as prone to emotion as many of the people I meet. Living in their head must be a nightmare :p

Valentines Day ruined. Me and my mate were supposed to be going out clubbing to chirpse all the lonely ladies but he's got a chest infection now and all my other mates will probably not want to do anything. FML. Will stay in and play FF6 or something. Probably have a browse on pornhub as well.

Being emotional is fantastic and rewarding if you can keep a bit of a handle on it though. Self awareness is key. But man, feel all the feels!

I was just thinking about it this morning on the bus where I managed to well up a frankly embarrassing three times, once due to a wonderful speech about gay rights on a podcast (inspiring and beautiful) and then twice to some music that I should know better than to listen to early in the morning before I have my emotional armour on.

I think the key is to be literate about emotions - what they are, what triggers them and what your response is. It's far too easy to become overwhelmed by them, or to let them dictate behaviour. They're more like the MSG of life, make everything taste better but might give you a headache.

PHILOSOPHISING, YEAH!

Oh wait, I know what I meant to talk about today! MUSIC BGAF, lend me your record collections!

Alternative love songs, give them to me. I used to make yearly V-Day mixtapes for the wife (before she had that awesome title and badass new surname) but after a decade I pretty much ran out of songs so it fell by the wayside. So, what are your quirky, sweet, softly strummed or heavy as fuck love songs of choice?

I'll post some of my own in due course.

Gaffer: Hey Ninj, where are you?
Me: I'm still in Sunderland, why?
Gaffer: There has been a false fire alarm activation at Irvin Building. Can you go and sort it out?
Me: Sure thing boss, it's only like 45 mins away and I'm not busy as fuck or anything.
Gaffer: Thanks Ninj! You're totally mint as fuck like.
*45 mins later*
Tenant: Thank god you're here! It's been going off all morning! Please silence it.
Me: *pats down jacket, no fire panel keys, left them at home*

This is going to be so good! I meant to set it away downloading before I went to work. Meh, I'll just pop home at lunch time.

PJ Harvey - This Is Love

Massive Attack - Angel

Thom Yorke - The Eraser

And for smanging purposes, this works a treat. Such a sexy, brooding track:

Death In Vegas - Dirge

I'll probably post a few more later when I have time.

Hmm yeah good list for an old dude :p I've used those Knife and YYY songs before myself too. Personally I think Love Song by the Cure is a bit dark, I'd go for one of their more whimsical tracks, like Lovecats or maybe something like Just Like Heaven. I like your style on this mix though, it's good. Dark, a little bit seedy.

Bjork - Joga

But 'our song' is All About You by McFly (semi-ironically)

I thought you were cool, ladydude.

Our first dance was a videogame tune, technically (The Ink Spots - If I Didn't Care). Fallout 3 all up in this bitch. Now I think of it though, it might've been Bobby Darin - Beyond The Sea. Still a videogame tune though. Huh, it was only 5 months ago and I've already forgotten. Hope the missus doesn't read that.

As for my Valentines tune, I'd go with Kid 606 - Kidrush. A particularly smooth choice.

True story.
It's certainly the story I'm sticking to ;)

More unconventional love songs:

Portishead - It Could Be Sweet

The Roots ft. Erykah Badu - You Got Me

Aphex Twin - Girl/Boy Song

Lucy Rose - Shiver

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Turn Into
(This song never fails to make me happy, it's just so joyous and life-affirming.)

I see your Aphex Twin idea, and I raise you Adem's cover version. Perfect for a lovemix.

The key to a good lovemix is that you have two metres you're trying to affect - the first is happiness/joy, the second is that weird umami emotional reaction of good-pain. So the trick is to up up up the happiness with something really sweet and fun, and then smash it like a wrecking ball with something really vulnerable and delicate. And then some songs about fucking for good measure.

Here's some of my choices btw

Nick Cave - Breathless

Groop Dogdrill - On Me Not In Me (would prob use Best Sex In Texas but it's not on youtube)

Morningwood - Take off Your Clothes (vid is a bit nsfw)

Eels - Good Old Days (really could use any one of about 10 other songs)

Reuben - Boy (this one's a bit of a kick in the balls, could also use Eating Only Apples for something a bit more fun)

Slow Club - When I Go (this might have been our first dance at the wedding)

Everclear - Good Witch of the North
(about as on the nose as a proposal song gets unless your name is Bruno Mars)

Afghan Whigs - John the Baptist (this song is 2 sexxxy 4 u - "Hey, welcome home, I got a little wine, some marvin gaye..." awww yeah)

Postal Service - Such Great Heights - because even I can be obvious sometimes

Frank Turner - You are My Sunshine (get your tissues ready)

So much good music today guys! Like literally all of it is decent, I'm not going to bother picking out individual posts.

Top work BritGAF peeps.

Oldies:

Curtis Mayfield - Love Is The Place

Billie Holiday - Lover Man

Otis Redding & Carla Thomas - Tramp
(You did specify unconventional!)

I have no idea what this is. It's just an empty page when I click on it. Could you just post it as, you know, vanilla text? I'm curious!

And the award for Soppiest Cunt goes to Mikeside!

I've used 5 of those songs myself :p You, Me, Dancing is perfect!

Oh and Mrs H informs me that Let's Get It On was our first dance, so my elitest "alt only" comments mark me as somewhat of a hypocrite. Damn.

I thought you were cool, dancing white man. :p

Ha! Just found this post from 2009(!) with the tracklisting of one of my lovemixes. IIRC I put this on when I proposed and it ending with us bangin on the floor, so classy.

Dude, that mixtape is a lame crybaby pussy-man mix, you need some good hard songs about fucking to round it out, although this probably says more about my distaste for RnB 'love' songs than it does your mixmaking skills. Every V-day I make a tape for my lady and I can consistently make her cry, which is a victory for me.

EDIT: You can't start with the Whitney, that's like a premature cumshot, save that shit for later on when the mix heats up. Also, two Leona songs in a row? No, pick one or t'other, not both. // EDIT AGAIN: use Angel I think, A Moment... is a bit lame IMO "Woah I can't believe this is happening to me!!" Umm, no, unless you're refering to the early ejactuation with the Whitney? :lol // Two songs one after another is a big no-no - here are my rules:

First, only one song per artist (this rule can be broken once-per-mix but the songs must at least be from different albums). For a lovemix I like to start off strong with some classic low-key romance, take it up a notch with some more pace and then once again with a bit of lovin', and then hit below the belt with a sappy softie that'll melt her heart. You can put a couple of softies together, and then at around the halfway point start with the songs about fucking. Very important. Pace the tape like you're seducing her - melt her heart, take her clothes off then fuck her hard, then hit up with some post-coital cuddles, then back to the bedroom. Also, use some songs that you love but she doesn't know. If they're especially good she will connect these songs to you and they'll be all the more special. I use B-sides for this purpose usually.

Here is my most successful (IMO) mix, it's a bit rock oriented for your tastes most likely but it did the trick for me -

Peggy Lee - Fly me to the moon (classic original version - pure romance - represents her) This might work for you
I'm From Barcelona - Treehouse (a song that represents me "I have built a treehouse, it's a you and me house")
Adem - Spirals (soppy song using spinning galaxies as a metaphor for two lovers)
Bright Eyes - First day of my life (classic indie love song, makes her cry on cue) This might work for you too, I dunno
Broken Social Scene - Swimmers (sexy voice, sets the mood)
CSS - Let's make love and listen to death from above ("Wine then bed then more then again")
Green Day - Hitchin a ride (leftfield, but it's a song she saw me perform with my band when we first met)
Morning Wood - Take off Your Clothes (raunchy song about gettin nekkid)
Groop Dogdrill - best sex in Texas (groinal groove rocker, such a sexy song)
Postal Service - Brand New Colony (electro romance, nice pacing to bring it down after the fucking)
Frank Turner - You are my Sunshine (the kick in the balls/uterus, so sad and romantic, tears guaranteed)
Fester - Fuck (a song by my mate's band - "I'm bored I'm bored I'm bored lets fuck!", always gets a laugh after the heart on the sleeve sappyness of the previous tracks)

Hmm, that was fun to write... as for you mix, no idea mate, got any Lionel Ritchie going on there? How about some Stevie Wonder?

(left the rest of the text in there because it make me LOL

I assure you my command of the english language is quite exquisite. My meaning is that I'm interested in alternative love songs, in that they're not necessarily in the canon of shit that you'll find on "Now that's what I call Love vol 26". Or if you were to ask 100 random people, about 1 or two would know what you mean.

edit: Plus, is not r'n'b or pop or something
