I need some advice.
I recently sold an item, packed it properly and shipped it out accordingly via USPS with tracking. The package made it all the way out to Houston (where the buyer lives) and was even marked "out for delivery". I believe at that point, the buyer's local postman then misplaced the package and it's now lost.
The buyer opened a dispute of course, and PayPal took back the funds for the transaction. The item is valued at $260 so it's a decent chunk of change. I only sold it in the first place because I needed the money.
Is there any course of action I can take? As a seller, am I screwed for something totally beyond my control?
Insurance on the package fell through?I need some advice.

did you had an insurance on the package? you might dispute that with USPS; otherwise.. it is pretty tough
Used USPS priority mail, so it includes $50 worth of insurance by default. Still nowhere near the value of the item.Insurance on the package fell through?

I've been buying and selling stuff for years and never bother with buying extra insurance because frankly I've never had any packages lost in the mail like this
USPS is not a risky company, it's the postal service. Just make sure you have the right amount of insurance on your packages. Any company that delivers packages can loose a package. I use USPS exclusively to ship packages and have never had an issue, I also make sure they are insured.I do not live in US; but even where I live I know USPS is a pretty risky company, so I would suggest you to start using another company even if it is a little more expensive or pay for a bigger insurance at USPS

If you can't afford to take such a loss, you should always insure your packages. Take it as a lesson learned because any courier can lose your package and not be responsible for it. http://commercialinvoiceform.orgQuestion: I get a lot of people asking to ship to Canada and sometime overseas but due to work I cant make it to a post office before it closes. In the past I had to go directly to the post office as there are forms you have to fill out. Is there a work around to this so I do have to go to the post office? I know there is international postage on PayPal but you still have to declare it in person and tell them what is in and they write it down right?

Are you in the US? You make it sound like you are.
You can use USPS.com to print your shipping labels. Including the customs forms. You can also do it through Paypal here
If you send first class mail (less than 4 lbs), then you don't need to print customs forums, it will just print a regular label.
Also you can have USPS pick it up off your doorstep for free here.

I am in the US. Pick up is not an option being that I'm not home for a pick-up but that custom form is very helpful as now see that it is all on the label rather than a separate form like before. Haven't shipped international in years. Thanks for the help.
You don't need to be home. You just leave it somewhere like your doorstep. They let you specify where it is located outside.
