I've just tried the demo and I'm loving it. I have some questions though. How do I acquire a resource outside my city's border? By Building a city near it or just building a road to it? Do I have to build an improvement on it for it to connect to my trade network?
Thanks.
To access a resource, the tile it's on needs to be inside the border of your city. You can buy tiles to branch out towards it or wait for the border to expand. The workers should handle the rest if they're set to auto.

So i know a few people have been referring to this, but I wanted to take a snapshot to see if I'm having the same problem...

So this is what my Civ 5 looks like when running DX11:

I've updated my drivers (Windows says its the msot up to date)
I've ran the DXSetup.exe that was found on this disk
Restarted Steam, restarted my computer... still no change from the image.

Anyone got any assistance?

(Though, FWIW DX9 works fine, at least in terms of the text being readable)

Eh, give Firaxis time to roll out patches also. I know Civ 4 wasnt the greatest game of Civ untill a few years later after expansions.

I'm not sure why people say this. I vastly preferred vanilla Civ IV, and I thought it was great from release day. It was (is?) by far the best Civ game, even without any addons or expansions.

Because there are a lot of people who had various issues with Civ 4 at launch that weren't addressed until later patches/expansions, especially multiplayer.

Some people didn't, sure. And we're seeing it all happen again now.

Is your video card overheating?

That's definitely not an overheating issue.

Try checking NVidia/AMD (depending on your video card) for the latest driver, instead of relying on Windows.

I like the changes to combat, barbarians, gold, city-states, city defense, resource usage, civ/leader bonuses, tech tree, unit movement, city radii. I think I like that Espionage, Religion, and Corporations are gone.

Dislike the AI (diplomatic, tactical, and strategic), lack of feedback on diplomatic relations, the permanence of social policies, loss of various game options from Civ IV, UI visual style.

Overall, not worth it to me so far. I'd rather have $50 and play Civ IV BTS.

You're hard to please.

Hey, it's a good game, but only marginally more enjoyable than Civ IV (and sometimes less enjoyable, because of the AI problems). That margin wasn't worth the $50 for me. The "likes" are mostly small stuff and are offset by the dislikes, which, although a shorter list, are more substantial in nature.

Game is good but not better than 3 or 4 right now. Still I'll play it for a few hundred hours at least, so it isn't the worst time/money transaction of the year for me. Still wish the game was better right now though :( So many things that need to be or can be tweaked.

Thanks. I really appreciate that.

Looks fantastic. Is there meant to be a different beftween the NA and EU editions? I know Australia had a completely different picture which appeared to be old.
I haven't had time to examine it completely, but I think the only difference is a slightly different interior packaging design.

Having played the demo twice through, I'm eager for more. It really seems to be paced differently than IV. In IV, if I had a peacemonger strategy, I would build almost everything everywhere. In V, buildings seem to be more expensive. Or maybe it's just the early game?

All in all, V seems to be a bigger change from IV than IV was from III, which I think is a very good thing.

Go play unpatched vanilla Civ 4 and you will notice that it has a lot of problems with the AI.

Hrm. Looks like the support page for my ATI card is giving me a gateway timeout... guess i'll have to try again later...
Though if anyone is having luck, my Card is is a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (7.15.0010.0096) according to the DirectX Diagnostic Tool...

After half a dozen games on Prince, mostly victorious, I have to say Im loving Civ V more than I did Civ IV. Though I cant say I dont miss a lot of the Civ IV features, mostly the diplomatic things. Kind of find it sad that they put so much work into the Leaders only to basically kill off diplomacy entirely giving you little to no reason at all to ever actually talk to the other leaders. But I bet theyll expand on that in an expansion sometime.

I also miss the other UN and Apostolic Palace stuff, map trading and what not. Most of the time I go through the entire game without knowing most of the civs until the very end when theres only a fraction of them left standing.

Finally I hope Firaxis or a modder like Rhys finds a way to make the City States a bit more meaningful cause so far Im having a hard time justifying paying just one of them, let alone multiples, a couple thousand gold over the course of the game for their "perks" when it seems a bit more worthwhile to just to take them over for their city and resources. All of the diplomatic interactions are too superficial, it just feels like a lot is missing and what is there is too cryptic I dont always know what the point of it is.

Its only been a day since launch but I cant wait to see where they go with the game and expand.

How the hell have you already played 6 games? o_O

Anyway, I kinda agree with the diplomacy thing. I find little reason to interact with non-city-state characters. I did do some research agreements, but I doubt I'll do that anymore since everyone seems to hate me (I only declared two wars....)

Awesomely detailed OT. I still haven't gotten this game yet, and I'm afraid to because it'll just suck so many hours away without me even realizing it. There's already so many games in my collection I wanna beat, but I recently just got into the Civ games, and they are pretty awesome. I love the interface for this one.

The way the leaders look in this game is cool, but I really liked the way they looked in Civ Rev more. There was something unique about the exaggerated features they had in Civ Rev, and somewhat in Civ 4.

I just got the game (my first time playing Civ game ever) and I'm definitely enjoying it so far. I'm kind of learning as I go along, but I think I'm doing a decent job (though I'm only on the beginner difficulty).

What I hate the most about this game though is how when I looked at my clock, almost 3 hours had somehow gone by... I can see how people get really addicted to the Civ games.

Im getting some bad crashes, even on the lowest graphics setting and direct x 9. My computer is pretty well above the recommended specs. It keeps crashing on the exact same turn every time at the end of the game. really damn frustrating. This seems a pretty significant bug, and I've found it only playing about ~10 hours. Bug testing FTL Firaxis.

Welp, I decided to play a Settler game on Duel and "Quick" speed to get the achievement. 6 hours later I won a cultural victory and unlocked about 17 achievements. This game has got a hold on me once again.

It's different. It's better in that it's a lot more polished, friendlier to new players and (as far as I can tell) balanced.

But although they share many traits they feel like unique games. The only thing that remains constant is, besides visual similarity, the thrill of building your civilization from scratch and seeing them flourish.

Try a Civ IV game, then try the demo if you can get it. Although that might take you about 8-10 hours.

Honestly, Civ 5 is different from Civ 4 in such a way, that you can get two different experiences from them. So, to answer your question, get both.

Thanks guys :) I tried the Civ V demo and the thing that immediately jumped out at me is how much better the graphics and UI is. Other than that, it seemed very similar but I'll trust you guys on this and just play Civ IV for now. After all, people have said it's one of the best games ever for a long time and Civ V really shouldn't change that :)

Still working on my first game (grr work) but I have to say that I am really liking the game so far. Thus far I'm really not seeing the horribleness of the diplomacy in this game. I use it a lot more in Civ5 than in 4 because in Civ4 the AI never ever ever agreed to anything reasonable no matter what, from my memories at least, and while sometimes the other civs can be unreasonable they often are willing to make trades that benefit both sides in 5.

Maybe I just got lucky this game, but I've actually been at peace with another Civ that was a little smaller than me but had a decent military and on the same continent for thousands of years. I keep expecting him to sneak attack me (in 4 he would have every time long ago) so it's been a nice surprise that it's at least a possibility for something else to happen.

Happiness/unhappiness seems cool so far - I like it a lot better than other mechanics they've used to try and stop you from spreading everywhere. Another really nice thing is that the AI for controlling where your people work in your city is a lot better than times past. When my civ was unhappy and so couldn't really grow it automatically switched to having a lot of specialists because they weren't affected by the unhappiness like production and food were. I -really- like the new way that your city borders grow, too.

All in all I am extremely pleased so far with how things are looking. I have the day off tomorrow so I should be playing all day. ;P

fuck this game and fuck gandhi too! I thought that asshole was supposed to be peaceful but he kept sending wave after wave after wave of soldiers to me. I managed to hold on for like 2 hours but eventually it was pretty much impossible to do anything about it.

You should have given the lawn mower back when he asked the first time.

I also preferred Civ IV Vanilla (or even Warlords) to BTS. I personally didn't find Espionage or Corporations added anything positive to the game, just more annoying things to micromanage. Corporations was just religion by another name, and Espionage just meant you had to park Spies all over your land to not get sabotaged every dozen or so turns.

Brilliant, I get Civ V a day early and because it's not unlocked I need to wait until tomorrow.

Any know if there's any way to view the Civilopedia from the main menu? It seems like it's not possible any more, which I find hugely disappointing. I like to be able to sit and just read for ages before I decide how I'm going to play my next game.

Damnit, I played a game until 2000+ AD, and it keeps crashing now. When I restart from an autosaved game it still crashes within 2-3 years.

I hate that expanding basically kills off social policy and golden ages. What possible reason is there to increase social policy costs by 15% per city?

Dont more cities = more points per turn though?

After playing the V demo a couple times (and finding my fix dreadfully unsatisfied) I loaded up BtS as I'd never played it before (only vanilla IV). I was beyond annoyed by the time I reached around 1000 AD. Will probably just go back to vanilla IV if I wind up playing it again before I cave in and just get V. Going back just made me appreciate the nice graphics and UI more (although I'm surprised that I actually can't hold 60 FPS at times even in the V demo when zoomed out).

Presumably the idea is that the more cities you have the harder it is to have everyone pulling in the same social direction, i.e., distinct and separated populations will want to set their own moral, cultural and political values. So more investment is required to align everyone with the social vision of the capital city.

I thought it was 30% per city, which sounds high but is your impetus to pay attention to culture. Also, the piety tree gives you 2 free policies when it's completed.

Right, but that actually makes sense.

I just like building a lot of cities and it's a lot harder to do that in Civ V.

In one of the podcasts they said they wanted to do this to stop people just building cities in places to gain/block territory and end up with the city itself being pretty crap; not being able to produce much or be beneficial at all apart from it's strategic location.

Also, with 1 unit per hex, I imagine less cities on screen would probably be a bit kinder on the system. Not a lot, but still a bit. (HD CITIES jk etc etc)

Hey guys, I'm thinking bout getting Civ 5, tried and loved the demo but the 2k forums are riddled with people having technical problems with the game. Has anyone here had the game crash or bug out repeatedly?

I fell in love with this game the second I found out you could no longer stack 90 units on a single fucking tile.

Did you even play Civ IV? Ignoring your hyperbole, you never needed an extreme amount of units in a stack. I think my record in Civ IV was something like 10.
