CVG: Next Xbox Event scheduled for April 26th

Microsoft has been on lockdown. I mean, there still hasn't even been any acknowledgement that the Durango even exists (which is why I am skeptical of all these "sources"). I doubt we'll get confirmation of an announcement before mid-March or so. There's no real benefit to affirming this date- the benefits of building up hype for an announcement 1.5 months away is minimal.

Microsoft has made me an incredibly happy gamer with both the Xbox and the 360. I'm excited to see what Microsoft has to offer.

The schedule PDF indicates that Microsoft is showing off Durango to its employees / partners at START FY14.

You guys are scaring me a little, are you telling me that I have to be jumping around my room waving my hands around in order to play games on the next box?
I don't want to do that. I never used kinect, I like to chill with my controller and barley move for hours on end. I'm not in the mood to fkn jump around my living room.
The only next gen console that we know for sure has a wavey camera is the PS4.
True story, I accidently punched my 3 year old daughter in the face whilst playing Wii Bowling over Christmas. (She walked behind me at an in-opportune moment)
She still gets all arsey about it if I approach the Wii to play it again, can't say I blame her :P
Motion controls need to be purged from the Earth!
I fear for the little brothers and sisters of the world.

I had to do it.
I wonder if Kudo Tsunoda is still in charge of Kinect stuff?

And people would yawn. Microsoft announcing a new console will overshadow anything Sony does.

Well obviously people would pay more attention to a new Xbox being released but trying to act as if no one would pay attention to Sony showing what the PS4 actually looked like is ridiculous.

Sure, Sony fans would care. The press would post a pic. The point is if they were stupid enough to think it would distract anyone from the Xbox reveal, then they're...wait, they released the Vita. I can't put anything past them. Regardless I can't wait to see the design of their new console. Infinitely more interested in a launch even though.

I wonder if MSFT was wanting to put out a 2GB RAM console and are scrambling now to decide on how much RAM they have to put in now because of Sony's move.

Seems reasonable. Without Epic to guide them, they probably thought 2gb would be more than sufficient.

The Yukon leak indicated that Microsoft were planning on 4 GB of RAM. However, all the specs from that leak are different so I don't know how much we can look into that.

Even 4 GB would be a huge gimp on the market. My love for Halo may be trumped by a love of RAM.

If I were the Xbox VP, I would go back to the drawing board for cost vs competition to step up the RAM. Pitch the feel-good nature all you want, but it's quality that the core market craves.

I dunno, I don't think Microsoft is really that reactionary. I think they'll stick with the ram that they had planned for and I don't think they'll switch strategies even knowing what Sony will put it in the PS4. At the end of the day they want to make money, and not necessarily a high end gaming machine.

Good or bad, they've decided on what they're doing. Sony pissing their own pants and announcing early doesn't appear to be frightening anyone. I feel for the devs that want to talk about their projects, but i'm sure they've known for quite some time when it would be that they could.

I think announcing early has been extremely beneficial for Sony actually. They've gotten a ton of coverage and social/media views. MS is misstepping by announcing late April...should be earlier IMO.

Going first does not make a difference if these devices have a life cycle of 5-7 years. They're not phones. Besides, positive and impactful first impressions is more important. They will announce when they're ready and I have a hunch they will perform above expectations.

They will have 7 months to sell their machine to the public after the reveal. A 2 month reveal advantage is not going to determine which console comes out ahead this Christmas. It's going to be all about what games and services are offered.

By 'pissing their pants' you mean gaining lots of press coverage and having GDC entirely to themselves regarding third parties?

Pretty much. They have gone early and got every one talking about there consoles, but will it be the same come Xmas? Only time will tell.

Which is good for us because we follow these sorts of things, but we are only a fraction of the total audience that these consoles have been sold to this gen.

I think Microsoft may suprise us at their event spec and games wise, i have a feeling that their machine will be better than the leaked/rumoured specs and there hasn't been a peep out of them since the Sony press conference, its almost like they don't care or have no reason to care.
I also feel that a lot of the 'bad' rumours that we have had about Microsoft and the 720 will turn out bullshit (like the no used games stuff and the os using 3gig of ram etc).

Its just fuunny that the 720 has kind of been written off in the gaming world already since the PS4 was announced but Microsoft know what they are doing and i expect them to prove just that.

I think there's truth to the rumors, but they're not necessarily telling the whole story. For instance, what if they shut out used retail games but allow us to buy/sell our game licenses on XBL?

And I bet they have a bunch of cool features/services with which to surprise us. They have so many people on this project, and they've been at it for so long, that I can't imagine they'll underdeliver on the OS front.

Microsoft is a software company through and through.

I think most of the praise directed towards Sony is because of their change in attitude and focus towards gaming.

I believe Microsoft are going to show some pretty stellar stuff.

Sony focused on games at their conference. Microsoft will hammer home the message that this is an all in one box. In fact I am 90% certain they won't use the word console once during their whole presentation, they will call Durango an entertainment box or device, not a console.

Who cares what they call it, they will show 3rd party games, and they will show 1st party games.

Sony's real message of the night was the fact they learned there lesson. That meeting was basically geared toward the developers and community. MS will still drive home the fact that it's a gaming console imo

I am not saying they won't highlight that Durango is capable of playing your big blockbuster games, but I think they will also hammer home that it is the all in one entertainment box that you will ever need.

The marketing people will care.

By 'pissing their pants' you mean gaining lots of press coverage and having GDC entirely to themselves regarding third parties?

By pissing their pants I mean rushing their event to the point of having Square come out and show an old video and tease E3. Press coverage was overwhelmingly bad or non-plussed. I liked most of what I saw, but it's clear the show wasn't well planned and is mostly likely the result of Sony rushing. They desperately need a win after the disastrous last 8 years, so I can't blame them for doing it, but don't tell me what we saw the other week was the result of months and months of careful planning.

Sorry, I don't buy it. I think Apple does it the right way of announcing and then releasing it soon after. They don't give time to let hype dissipate. No one is buying a Sony PS4 right now. If Microsoft has even one thing that makes it more attractive to consumers than Sony announced, those two months of mindshare won't mean anything.

This. All that mindshare is almost worthless if you can't buy the product.

Didn't that Micosoft guy in that article from a week ago or whatever suggest that it was more the 360 that is the main focus for all this media stuff, kind of like he was suggesting that gaming is moving forward on the 720 (although he didn't say that part obviously).

Press coverage was overwhelmingly bad or non-plussed.

That's not exactly Sony's fault as many tech blogs felt the very idea of a gaming console a dinosaur that should have been put to bed a long time ago, since mobile gaming is the future, etc.

I think we'll have much more positive press on the MS reveal simply because MS will position it's new console as 70% entertainment (DVR, Kinect interaction with shows, etc.) and 30% gaming. Tech press will feel like MS "gets it" as you have to reinvent your idea of a gaming platform to intersect with the new wave of living room entertainment. I don't agree, but hey, that's why it's great that we'll have two consoles to choose from.

Or I could be completely wrong and MS will go the Sony route of showing nothing but games for two hours. I highly doubt that'll be the case, but we'll see. Can't wait till the unveiling.

Well since Durango doesn't officially exist the exec can't mention it. I interpreted it as the Xbox console itself has gone from a gaming console to an entertainment device.

If always online and no used games becomes a reality, it doesn't matter what they show. They failed.

Right, right and that's bad a thing because?

I don't expect the MS show to be much better. I do expect it to be more focused though.

Sony's "message" is simply them opposing what and how MS is presenting the Xbox. They played catch up pretty much this entire gen trying to me too and match MS in the services and expansion space and I think they found out that they really can't. So MS says "not just for hard core gamers", we'll say "we are all about the core gamer". Pretty simple marketing 101 when you think about it.

I hope MS does make the new Xbox a "media center". We got rid of our DVD player and cable box because of the 360. It's the only thing we turn on now, it's fantastic.

Going slightly off topic but these annalysts and 'epert' guys that predict stuff like this always make me laugh, for a start console games still sell in huge numbers overall and i can't speak for anyone else but can you imagine all those tens of millions of COD, Halo and GTA fanboys etc playing their fave games on I-Pads and mobile phones? lol

I'd literaly bet everything i own that the PS4 and 720 will sell huge numbers and that we will get a PS5 and Xbox 3 in 10 years or so.
Just like PC gaming has been about to die for 20 years now and it hasn't happened, mobile phones were goping to kill handheld gaming (remember that one from years ago?) well it never happened, quite the opposite really.
Its just annalysts who always go to the extremes with what they 'predict'.

That depends what you are expecting from the presentation.

If they do what I expect, it will be great (for them). If they do what I want, it'll be great (for me). I expect it to be great for them. Selling to the hardcore ala Sony would be stupid. They need to show a healthy mix of everything. I just want to see next gen games.

I do think they will expand eventually like they always do, but you are right. They see Nintendo down in the dumps and Microsoft spreading themselves to cover every demographic and so they see a niche opening up and decided to exploit it.
