DF - Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PS5 - The Digital Foundry Tech Review

This is insanely impressive, and so far only watched a few minutes of DF analysis. Insomniac are in a league of their own.. now where is Resistance.

Dat Rivet fur tho... Also, HUGE boost in RT performance, would like to hear from IG what's the magic behind such resolution bump compared to Spider-Man, this really gives a lot of hope for AMD GPUs to perform well with those kind of effects, like really, Lisa Su should talk to the guys how they achieved it.

This game looks absolutely INSANE.. i'm still watching but when he shown the little details i just couldn't believe my eyes.

This is fucking mindblowing.

The game is literally titled Rift Apart. It's the central gameplay feature.

Like proclaiming guns are a gimmick in a COD game, lol.
There is even a gun that uses rift mechanics.....Insomniac posted it on Twitter yesterday. Some felt it was kind of a spoiler so....

They are going out of their way to not make it gimmicky. One rift is basically a fast travel for the same area.

Delivery high quality games non-stop.

That is about PS owners have the whole generations…. something not easy to understand and that generate the loyalty userbase.

R&C put PS5 hardware above everything else in the market.

Truly awesome job from Insomniac with two big exceptional games in a year after the acquisition… Sony Delivery DNA already incorporated in the recent acquisition studio.

rendering two different viewports at native resolution that you can walk through.. ok that's crazy

this is a joke dont get mad
Lol, why would i get mad, portal was crazy too. I'm just referring to the crazy amount of data and detail present in both worlds as they chuck data in and out of memory.

  • Test made without the day one patch.
  • There is an unprecedented level of detail in everything from the bugs to the random non-interactive insects on the planets, to the shotgun shells fired at the ground... visually have been given special care with perfect graphics as well as reflections by RT.
  • The main characters have ~1/4 of a million triangles not counting hair and fur.
  • The final version is better than what Sony showed us in the previous trailers, basically Insomniac Games has greatly improved his game.
  • RT reflections are now in 4K and not 1080p as was the case in the version shown in June 2020.
  • Dimensional jumping is also part of the gameplay.
  • Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart is better than the Ratchet & Clank movie released in 2016 in most areas.
  • There is no frame loss or stutters when switching between dimensions.
  • Performance mode with RT at 60fps is very smooth.
  • Fidelity mode at 30fps targets native 4K most of the time (1800p~2160p).
  • The game takes full advantage of the PS5's SSD.
  • Loading times are almost instantaneous.
  • R&C RA is a Next Gen showcase unfeasible as is on the PS4/One generation.

I think you meant this as a joke, but just for anyone who might accidentally think this is the same thing Ratchet is doing... all Portal does is shift you from one area of the existing loaded in map to another, whereas Ratchet is loading in an entirely new environment instantaneously from scratch, with your player character as the only constant. As you'd imagine, this requires a colossal amount of memory and power to accomplish. Nothing has ever done this before, including Portal or Titanfall 2 (which just changes textures on the existing loaded in map).

Yeah Insomniac's gone leaps forward with their tech and it's super impressive.

I believe Titanfall 2 was the same map loaded twice within the game space and they swap you to an 'identical' position on the other chunk. Not just swapping textures instantly.

Yep. Thor 2 Dark World came out around the time Portal 2 had come out and everyone likened the Thor's ending boss fight to Portal.

It's really depressing to see what we wont see this kind of level switching in GoW even though the Norse mythology 9 realms setting is literally identical and worst of all, the tech is there. It's shocking but we are literally at a point where we have the tech in consoles that can match the ways movies edit together different setpieces.

I remember brining this up back when Cerny first did Road to PS5 but if we wanted we could easily do Nolan style dream within dreams sequences now on PS5.

We still might need some short 2 second cutscene to mask the loading but its possible to go from the car to the hallway by just doing a quick 2 second close up of the protagonist.

I guess it's a newer version of portal. Valve better get off their duff.

I still remember when people were wow'ed by Infamous Second Son and everyone made tons of gifs showing off those PS4 graphics. I think this game will have that same effect for PS5.

I take your viewports and move them too 2006

I know it's executed differently and it's just a whole loaded level. But still. Prey was nice

Fucking tragedy, isn't it?

And yet there are folks on this forum who think that GoW being cross gen won't hold it back at all. Everything can just be easily scaled down.

That is the same room, no?
There is only one area being rendered in Portal.

R&C do something similar to what The Medium devs called "innovative", "first time", etc… but let's not compare them because the results are too far a part.

What's that weird jerking when he walks in? Just lower level floor?
Can't say i know for sure but if i were to guess, i would say they're teleporting you into the other viewport once you get close enough but it is not entire seamless or it could also be physics related as well with the lower floor.

Rendering 2 separate viewports simultaneously like the Medium but this time you can just walk across both. Ok this is some crazy shit.

that is what being a part of first studio does. with unlimited funding, you can take advantage of your imagination, without a budget constraint.

Prey was awesome. Shame you can't officially buy it on Steam anymore.

Insomniac knocked it out of the park. A great showpiece for the PS5 and a great display of their tech in general. I've never had an interest in the series even since the beginning but this game looks fantastic visually and it's a great example of art and tech working in harmony.

Insomniac were easily one of the most consistent and efficient AAA developers of the last generation. There output was astounding and impressive considering it was across 3 different platforms in Xbox, PlayStation, AND VR.

After finishing up Re7 with those low quality textures popping up towards the end, Ratchet is about to show me why I drop so much money on my oled. Bring it.

I hope this is sarcasm. First party doesn't have an unlimited budget. Less constraints having to only target one platform.

This game is really encouraging for the RT future on ps5.

Thats the point of not making cross-gen. Happens with PS4. Third party will not use RT if both Xbox and Playstation exclusives don't push RT foward.
