Digital Foundry: Assassin's Creed Shadows - PS5 Pro vs PS5 Review - One Of The Best Upgrades For The System

If yotei can looks better than shadows i will be over the moon.

Deffo waiting for a pc port of yotei after playing shadows. I need it to look as close as possible and no way thay the pro can deliver that in my opinion. The hardware just isn't good enough. Compared to my pc obviously. Which is worth like 4 times a pro.

I have my reservations about Yotei and I don't think it'll be as visually pleasant as Shadows.

Ubisoft went out there way to push the engine and incorporating a new micro-polygon rendering system similar to Nanite, and on top of that they adding full RTGI. The only thing I cans see Yotei exceeding in is facial IQ and animations. Harsh I know, but Sony first parties have been mostly mediocre since the start of this PS5 gen.

Yea but it won't have Naoe.

If they include PSSR they will possibly be forced to reduce the native resolution to 720p and upscale to 1440p.

I wish the PS5 Pro had an 80%-100% better GPU than the PS5 Slim and not just 45%

That's not how it works. They'll just upscale from whatever its at now.

Ubi has their own upscaling tech they're using.
taau is quite light
it won't have to drop to 720p but I'd say it would surely drop below 1080p which would make a lot of people angry

dlss vs taau

around 10% performance cost. I think PSSR could be heavier on the ps5 pro or something like that. not so sure actually

anyways it is quite bad. they should implement PSSR regardless. PSSR at 900p internal would probably look better than TAAU at 1080p internal

I don't know how much you're allowed to say, but I'm actually thinking of holding off on playing AC Shadows till they drop the Pro PSSR patch, I was currently already playing MSGV (which i really love).

My question is how long do you think we'll be waiting for the patcH? if you're not allowed to answer that's fine but I did think it's worth asking.
They said that the PSSR patch has already been submitted for cert (before the game even launched). Of course, I can’t say exactly when the patch will land, but safe to say it should be on the order of weeks and not months.

Ideally we should expect a 2025 big budget open world game to look better than a 2020 big budget one.
Yup (and GoT is a PS4 game).

I thought you were playing this game on your Series X.

In terms of PSSR, we analysed PSSR and TAA dat the time of shipping AC Shadows and found better results with our TAA solution. However, PSSR is a new upscaler and after an in-depth collaboration with Sony over the past few months, many issues have been addressed, mostly around moving vegetation and water - problems that other titles have faced. We're now confident that the image quality with PSSR will always be better than with TAA.

For launch, our priority was quality mode specifically to ensure it didn't prompt graphical artefacts or other issues. We've continued to optimise RT reflections and the game in general, and we're happy to say that a future update will enable RT reflections on PS5 Pro's balanced mode.
Nice.

"RT reflections were developed after the initial delay to AC Shadows. Given the shift in our release window, we wanted to make sure we remained competitive on high-end PCs and PS5 Pro. We had an extremely motivated team that had learned a lot developing the RTGI solution, and felt confident in achieving the objective of shipping RT reflections with a 30fps performance target on Pro. This is precisely why I tell people that when a game lacks a featureset/has issues/etc, it's generally down to devwork. It's Game Design 101, and as a student of said major, it was one of the first things we learned. It's truly like a child's sandbox. You can bitch and complain about a missing shovel, less sand than other sandboxes, or what have you. Or..........you can build something appreciable with the tools available.

I wonder if as part of optimizing reflections, they have improved quality as well. Seemed quite noisy to feel like a bonus. And may be PSSR can clean it up like it did for R&C

This essentially is the info I heard from the dev team. Better them than me to put it out there 😉.

So PSSR will be present on all modes and extended RT will be added to balance mode as well. There are some other tweaks under the hood as well but now there will be meaningful improvements over base in every mode! Definitely something to look forward to!

Now the 40fps mode will become great on Pro. PSSR (better than their TAA that breaks in motion), RTGI + RT reflections. Also the 60fps mode will greatly benefit from PSSR.

They are talking about eventually adding virtualized geometry to vegetation and characters when they release expansions. Should be interesting to see how far they are able to push the hardware

I'm looking forward to the new PS5 Pro Balanced Mode, which improves image(latest PSSR) quality and adds Extended RT.

Christ, Ubisoft is woke but they still created both characters that are attractive. Naoe is not a sexbomb but she is cute.

But this old and ugly hag?
I agree on this. In fairness the AC shadow protagonist us cute. For me, I just kinda dissapointed the game has twisted gender ideology binary crap thing in it with one of the npc in the game. About, GOY, Im a bit worried GOY since the actress model used as protagonist is a radical left and active lgbt activist. I just pray that there will no push and force woke agenda in GOY especially twisted gender ideology like binary, transgenderism and misuse of pronouns trash.

Which is also means good news for upcoming ps5 games especially DS2, GTA6, Wolverine, Saros, etc. Pssr ml is really evolving in a very fast pace and more exciting is the pssr + fsr4 integration coming up in the near future.

I'm wondering why the second half of the RTGI demo that's present here wasn't in the PS5 Pro video, even though that's the system he's choosing to highlight the upgrades with. The additional detail included with Specular was sort of dismissed in the Quality mode portion even though it does show a substantial upgrade over the SSR implementation here. It also shows an upgrade over the base consoles that just includes RTGI Diffuse in Quality mode, but Oliver never showed an example of it, just saying the modes had similar settings. across both systems. Well here they are saying something different. The addition of Specular is the reason why some people in the other thread thought it was just a different time of day in the scenes to dismiss the obvious upgrade in lighting added to the Pro Quality mode. Hopefully with the update coming this could be included in the 40fps mode as well.

This section clearly needed to be added because the VS. video was extremely barebones:

Yet, it's missing from the video except for one still shot that doesn't even highlight the difference. They should've released one long video instead of handing it off to others in pieces. It's two totally different tones highlighting the differences.
