DigitalFoundry: Hands-on with PS4 1080p 30fps...!!

You know how Call of Duty feels "snappier" than Halo? That's the difference between 60fps and 30fps.

That... that's probably the best analogy I've heard in the past 20 minutes.

Yeah I see what ya mean. Literally. I understand a little better what the big fuss is then. If they can accomplish it for current gen, why can't other companies (including Killzone's) achieve the same frame rate. Okay, I understand the point of these frustrations.

Dang, well this is what you expect from launch titles. But man improved image quality and better quality textures were what I most wanted from next-gen.

Acceptable last gen shouldn't be acceptable moving onto new hardware. I genuinely think the engine has some issues with input lag which they can try and cover up with plasters but it's buried to the point where it'll never feel as snappy as it should. While Call of Duty gets alot of hate, that's something they really do nail is the controls and movement feeling snappy and precise - this is the level console shooters should all be reaching now.

If a game is built around the feel of the input (and it was in Killzone 2) then I'm not sure I agree. I want Killzone to retain its feel and identity.

No they don't lol. Killzone is not a twitch shooter. You don't get these sorts of visuals at 60fps.

Great, here comes the gifs. You know that these low res gifs do nothing to prove any graphical point, right? They hide the flaws in many ways which makes a game look better than it really does.

As much as I like a smooth 60fps, people expected there to be a switch to it becoming the standard? Because that's probably never going to happen as long as developers try to push the graphics as much as possible.

That's not really a fair comparison. COD has more auto aim including a full on snap lock, than most shooters ever created. It also has far higher sensitivity and movement speed compared to Halo. The frame rate is just one part of why it feels smoother.

Because 30fps looks better in screenshots and trailers on youtube. It means they can have more effects playing at once.

:(

edit: Collected all the negatives together so as to better enjoy those GAF tears :P

Not saying I'm gonna cry because of it, but that's my personal reason why I couldn't call a proper winner after E3: I ended liking PS4 way more than XBONE because of Sony's attitude towards gamers, of the greater power compared to MS's system and due to the aggressive price... That said, the games on the whole left me kinda uninspired (even the ones praised as awesome, like inFamous).

Rather harsh article but it's definitely the most in depth tech analysis we've gotten of PS4 exclusives. It also seems like the article is framed to say XBO can do 60fps but PS4 can't, which is odd. Still it's a very good analysis. I hope the KZSF issues are cleaned up by launch. Final dev kits should help a lot too, whenever they go out.
It sounds like XBone games had longer development time. Optimization is an ongoing task for engineers and judging a game based on a demo version which isn't even beta isn't exactly fair. Lets wait and see.

Agreed. I can't stand what MS is doing with the Xbone, but I think it's sad how it's now more popular to shit on them even when they show some good.

Whats good ?
It was expect that KI and Forza would be 60fps .
One is a fighting game and the other is a sim both types of games where 60fps this gen .
I would love for all of Sony games to be 60fps but with all multi games going to be mostly the same it's easy to see why they would chose eye candy for there games .

As good as dead to me.

Yup. Input lag built into the game = bad game. I thought this was fixed with Killzone 3? Did the fans really like the input lag that much? It's ridiculous some people defended Killzone 2, saying the game breaking input lag was just "weight".

Glad to see everything at native 1080p though. That was THE most important thing they could do this generation.

The XBone article was very similar with the 60fps exceptions being KI (which graphically looks a bit ass compared to a lot of other games) and Forza 5. Turn 10 are wizards when it comes to that type of thing though, huge fans of theirs.

Fighting and driving need that 60FPS and a lot of other games are just better with it. It's why DriveClub could be dead to me and let's be honest, it's a maximum of 6 months awaya nd they're already having drops from 30fps. I don't hold out much hope.

Top graphics games will end up being 720p30. It´s the only way we are going to achieve "Last Samaritan" level this gen. And, afterall, this time PS4 has a decent upscaler...

The reason why we get shitty framerates is because gamers like shitty framerates and reviewers don't give a fuck about framerates. It's like they don't understand their own medium and the importance of well done interaction.

Read the various Last of Us threads and be educated. You guys just get what you want.

High latency always hurts a game. It's bad. Full stop. You can be 60fps and not be a twitch shooter.

It's important to press a button and have it be recognized as fast as possible.

A feeling of weight can be done entirely through animation and speed.

Killzone 2 would be a much better game if it was 60fps.

(Infamous) "The frame-rate is very consistent too, and there's no obvious pop-in on the horizon when bounding across rooftops."

Hate to disagree with them, but I noticed textures/objects not loading, and entire buildings (an entire watch tower) popping in. Some was just across the street, and most of it wasn't more than 75 yards to 2 blocks away.

Was very obvious to me on rooftops. Ground level/enclosed areas were fine.

2D Trees, rough ground textures and background (granted anything within 50' looks nice)

Buildings just 2 blocks away with worse draw distance/texturing than current gen open world games I've played.

Watchtower on the right popping in out of nowhere, building textures/polys changing and/or popping-in.

Yeah, I love the way Killzone games have weight/"lag" to their aiming rather than impossible oiled up twitch cyborg shooting. Makes you feel like a heavy ass soldier and not a camera on greased rollerskates.

It was patched in Killzone 2 and fixed in Killzone 3 and I'm sure this game will have the ability to turn it off too. It's a non-issue, but yes it did make the game feel like the guns had some weight to them.

omg at that need for speed rivals video.

now i am going to buy it. %$#%. its like NFS HP. the best Need for speed game i ever played.

i am so fucking excited.

god damn where have i been ???

EDIT : is need for speed HP servers on PS3 still up ?

are they active ?
it would be great if someone can share this info as i think i want to buy the game again :)

If there's any input lag at all when the game releases it's an issue.

Input lag isn't "weight", it's a technical flaw that does not belong in video games. Ever.

As i thought. Games are still few critical months before release date. From this point it can look only better.

Second Son looks amazing

I dont think its fair to write off DriveClub for not being 60fps. Games like PGR4 and Forza Horizon were only 30fps and looked great while still feeling very slick. DriveClub falls in this same niche with these games in terms of being a realistic-looking, yet not totally realistic driving, sort of game.
