So I have a question, and I'm gonna out it in spoilers just in case. They include spoilers from the 50th, and a bit of speculation.
So Rose/The Moment. At the end of S1, when she absorbs the time vortex, one of the first things she says is "I am the Bad Wolf. I create myself." Now, we see that The Moment's interface is The Big Bad Wolf, and taking Rose's form. So my question is, is the Rose Tyler that we saw in S1/2 something/someone who was created by The Moment in order to get hold of the Time Vortex for a short time, or did The Moment just take the real Rose Tyler's form for whatever reason? I know she said something about Rose Tyler when talking with Hurt, but I was still too WTF to follow it, lol. If it's the former theory, then it makes the "real" Rose's speech as the Bad Wolf at the end of S1 seem much more interesting and powerful. At that single point in time she was more powerful than just about anything in the universe, as she is The Moment and holding the entire Time Vortex in her mind.
The Moment took a form of someone from the Doctor's life. It should've been someone of importance and significance to his past, but Rose is the only one who is still presentable and adored by the fans so she took that form. It could've easily been Amy Pond or Donna Noble.

I think you're overthinking it a bit. The Moment mentions to Hurt that he/she/it chose a form that was familiar to him. The Moment tried to pick a form from his past, but (possibly due to the Doctor's weird timeline) he/she/it accidentally chose a form from his future - specifically Rose in her Bad Wolf form. Rose/Bad Wolf from series 1 has nothing to do with the Moment, it's simply an imitation. Besides that, Moffat later mentioned that he chose to use Billie Piper like this because he didn't want to add or change anything about Rose's story as told by RTD.
Saw this special live, loved every second of it. So glad that they went with a slower pace rather than the overly hectic pace of some of the more recent episodes. Also very glad to see that they chose to tell an interesting story rather than simply throwing a million references at us. Christopher Eccleston's absence was very annoying, and I expected to see just a tiny bit more of the classic Doctor's when they turned up at the end (just a quick shot of them in their respective Tardises just before freezing Gallifrey would have sufficed), but the rest of the special was so good that I won't complain about that. Love how they brought Tom Baker back. The idea of the Doctor retiring at some point to turn into the Great Curator, in a museum full of artifacts of his past, in his old 4th body - such a lovely image. True to the concepts of the classic series and 4/Baker's personality as well. I feel bad for 5, 6 and 7, but I guess they'll get a chance in 10 years.
I also really liked how Hurt represented the classic Doctor's in the way he talked an presented himself. Great actor, accepted him as another Doctor almost immediately.
Looking forward to Matt's last episode. I'm sad to see him go, but the timing is just right. I'm prepared to be very annoyed when we'll get 30 seconds of Capaldi before having to wait the better part of a year before seeing him again .
Edit: For those that might have missed it: the afterparty liveshow on BBC3 was hilariously embarrasing. Here's a clip of possibly the worst part: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZYkuSto80k.
It's got everything: technical problems, a confused John Hurt, a trendy, factory-produced boyband that has nothing to do with Doctor Who getting angry at the producers, a panicked presenter who's close to tears, a confused (and ignored) collection of classic companions in the back, and Stephen Moffat cursing under his breath and sinking his head in his hands. I couldn't watch all of it, because we (probably wisely) decided not to spoil a perfect evening with a show like that. I love Who, but I could never stand the shouty, hectic presentation the BBC uses for productions like this. It's bad enough having to catch the last five minutes of Dancing with the Stars before every episode of Who.

Hmm, interesting. So we still don't know where real Rose got the name"Bad Wolf," as it would be implied that if The Moment was imitating her, then it also took the name of Bad Wolf.
My first reaction to the bolded is "Oh god that would have been amazing!!!!" but after seeing how "Rose" was played by The Moment, I imagine a lot of the spark that made Donna would have been missing. I think Piper did a fantastic job separating Bad Wolf from Rose, and she could make it work. Donna, on the other hand, maybe not as much.
The only other people talking at the time are the general and possibly his right hand man/advisor. It's neither of them. The High Council is the table that Rassilon sits at in the end of time. The advisor to the general makes note of that they are still in session and have a plan to which the general says. "To hell with the High Council there plan has already failed"
The plan being The White point star and the master

The Moment was actually trying to get someone from the Doctor's past, so that John Hurt would recognize him/her. I would have paid so much money to see them use Adric, just to fuck with fans that had to suffer through the 80s.
On that note, I was very pleased to see Kamelion get a small cameo on the notice board in Unit's HQ. Such a bad idea, but such a hilarious character in retrospect.

Another thing to take note of is the way Rose was always and understanding and calming figure for the Doctor and Rose was what essentially the person who helped him get over what he thought he did. As a form to choose from the Moment did a great choice instead of going for the pushier and more aggressive Donna who would've gone: "Oy! What the hell do you think you're doing?".
Yeah, that's not Capaldi's voice, even if he decides not to use his regular accent in the role. The only Doctors you hear are Tennant, Smith and Hurt. You can also hear the first Doctor very briefly when the classic Doctors start arriving on Gallifrey. Can't remember the exact quote, but he adresses the 'War Council of Gallifrey' (which means that it's not Hartnell's voice, because the name 'Gallifrey' didn't even exist during his run).

The first time I heard it I thought it wasn't Capaldi. If I try really hard I could imagine it is him without his normal accent, but it's easier to think it wasn't.
Besides, it doesn't really matter because we know what Capaldi sounds like so it isn't a major revelation or anything.
Don't get me wrong. I'm no particular fan of Rose as a companion but as the Moment she was perfect. Both as an actress and also as a choice for a conscientious figure from the Doctor's life.
So I guess I'll post this here til we have an official Christmas thread. It's only an announcement of a casting, no roles revealed, but I'll stick it in spoiler tags in case people want to go in cold.
Orla Brady has been cast. Which is awesome personally because I've recently been making my way through Fringe and she's fantastic in that. Apparently playing someone from the Doctor's past though that line gets used constantly. (Though how great would it be to reintroduce Romana now Gallifrey's 'back')

Totally agree here. I rather dislike Rose as a character, but I've never had a problem with Billie Piper's acting. She's leagues beyond Karen Gillan, for example.
Just thought of something. 11 may have forgotten about 12, but surely Clara hasn't, has she? It will be interesting if 11 is sure that he will die in the Christmas special while Clara is convinced that he won't. Then again, it's also possible that Clara won't even be in the special.
They weren't supposed to know which one was the human. The human assistant had the inhaler with her from earlier. Even though they figured it out, they kept quiet and kept the negotiations on track.
man, if they'd had the time to characterise the shapeshifters a bit more prior that would have probably paid off better in-episode. Of course, it was a doctor-focused episode so I'm fine with it not doing that... but still
Not to get all Comic Book Nerd, but some people in this thread keep saying Queen Elizabeth I set up Torchwood because she was pissed at the Doctor. It was actually Queen Victoria who set up Torchwood centuries later after the whole werewolf thing, but the 10th (11th?) Doctor did meet the older Elizabeth as well when he met Shakespeare, and she was pissed.
Seen this twice now. I would have preferred less Zygons - and I like the Zygons. They never really seemed like a threat, certainly not one worth nuking London for. I wonder if the show was actually an hour long at one stage (as was heavily rumoured) and they ended up extending it?
Also, it was a major missed opportunity not getting the surviving/agreeable Doctors to record new dialogue for the Mega Team Up. Since they were shown in small video windows, you wouldn't have noticed any lip sync issues, and they could have had a proper inter-generational discussion as they co-ordinated their plan.
Unsure about the Time War 'retcon'. The programme could have moved past it simply by not talking about it, as opposed to rewriting history. On the other hand, one of the earliest write-ups for the Doctor's character in the 60s was that he was 'running from something, but also looking for something'. He's done the former, now it seems he'll be doing the latter.
Christmas special sounds awful. I'm sick to death of the all the Silence-Trenzalore-Question stuff, I really thought Name of the Doctor had finished all that. Hopefully it will be one last gap of Moff's over-convoluted period, and we can have a fresh start with Capaldi.
I was under the imoression it was Capaldi due to the timing and editing. Though it could've just been added in Post once they secured the footage to edit his appearance into the sequence. A last minute decision designed to make us all nerd out just a bit more.

Can the show really "not talk about it", though? The Time War and the Doctor's role in it is(/was?) one of his defining characteristics in NuWho. At some point, I think it would've come up again.
Was it a conscious writing choice to not have the 9th doctor? Or was it that the actor didn't want to be involved so they just worked around that? Or something else?
Just curious, because I would have liked him being in this as well. It would have been interesting to me.
Sort of? The way they undid it, then did it, then undid doing it to undo it again.. I'm not entirely sure if it really was supposed to always be that way at Lake Silencio. At least this movie didn't get THAT timey wimey.
No, it's pretty clear that the Doctor never died in any timeline. The undoing was making it so everyone knew he didn't die (because River fired into the ground), but it was always the Tesselacta that River shot in the main timeline.
Why all of that made it so time fell apart is a much bigger mystery.
"Wearing thin." Old and tired. There may be a subconscious element to, in that the War Doctor was created specifically for fighting the Time War, and now that it was over he was ready to change again.

Eccleston refuses to be involved with Doctor Who at all costs. The War Doctor was very likely a slightly rewritten part that would have originally been filled by the Ninth.

I really doubt this, tbh. There's no way at any point that they'd have been expecting to be able to get Eccleston back for a full role like this given history. And it's entirely possible that part of the reason he turned it down is because the only thing they asked him to do was the regeneration scene at the end.

I don't reckon it was rewritten, but I do think that when Moffat probably conceived the original idea and did his treatment before actually starting the script it was probably a modern day three Doctors with the three of them, with Eccleston in that role. Then they had their chat, he turned them down & Moffat adjusted plans accordingly when actually doing the script for real. This is what 'insiders' have suggested, too.
"There have been two David Tennant Doctor Whos technically and with John Hurt playing another Doctor in the film, it basically means he can't regenerate again. The riddle of the regeneration problem, something fans have talked about for decades, will be faced head on at Christmas. There is going to be another huge cliffhanger and somehow Peter Capaldi has to join and the series has to continue."
The 12 regenerations limit is a central part of Doctor Who mythology - science fiction is all about rules, you can't just casually break them. So if the Doctor can never change again, what's Peter Capaldi doing in the Christmas special?

Orla is Tasha Lem, a member of the Church of the Silence and the Doctor's liaison with them during his time on Trenzalore. She also arranges for Clara to be present at the regeneration (albeit far away, for safety)! Her face appears as a projection, as well as her appearing in person. She seems not to age.
I'm not certain, but everything I've seen and heard about the Christmas special points to her being important but new. I'm leaning towards her actually being the Papal Mainframe Herself, as mentioned in AGMGTW... She certainly is powerful and possibly age-proof.
Incidentally, I'm really amused by Eleven's equivocations about his age. Definitely answers the question of whether you can actually trust what the Doctor says about his own age.

How would someone like the Doctor even count his age. He probably has to ask the Tardis or check the age of his screwdriver and offset some value to get a vague idea of how long he's been alive.
With non-linear time and especially considering that he seems to talk about Earth years even though he spends a lot of time in places with variable length days/years it'd be a nightmare to work out how much time has passed over you.
