Doctor Who 50th Anniversary |OT| Splendid Chap, All Of Them

Why are you guys happier you need to wait two more hours to see the next Doctor Who?

I'm waiting that long anyway. Usually have Christmas dinner around six. I imagine a lot of people are the same.

Besides, it makes BBC One look good. Their #1 drama in the #1 spot on the schedule.

Because if it's on at 1930 then everyone in the UK will have already had their traditional fight before it's shown.

you bastard :lol

I probably won't be watching it live. Just like every year I'll be kept busy enough with family stuff. First time I'm actually sad about it though, really curious to see how 11's era will finish. And, obviously, 12's first moments. Oh well, it'll be nice to have something to watch during my hangover the next morning.

Gosh, Call The Midwife is on early as a result. Wonder if they'll have to censor it. Then again, it might be a bit milder for Christmas.

Sort of off topic, but this is the current Doctor Who OT more or less.

After the 50th, I finally decided to go back and watch some classic Who, starting with "The Best of William Hartnell" collection on iTunes. I really didn't care for An Unearthly Child, but The Aztecs was awesome, and totally felt appropriate. Seeing Hartnell accidentally propose to the garden woman just resonated perfectly with Tennant's Elizabeth moment in 50.

I'm wondering if I should track down more Hartnell first, or do all the "Best of"s. I'm also really itching to get to the Eighth Doctor audio adventures after Night of the Doctor. Does anyone know if the Big Finish digital downloads are DRMd?

I'm watching Aztecs right now! Finally got round to watching the new Special Edition, the new remaster is gorgeous.
I love Hartnells face when she accepts his "proposal".

If you like that era, watch some more, but it's not really necessary to watch all of them before moving on to other classic Doctors.

I hadn't seen these "best ofs" on iTunes, good idea to round up the better stories.

What do the "Best of" collections have? I can tell you whether you're missing anything good.

Do you only want to watch good episodes, or important ones as well (sadly these aren't always one and the same)

Hartnell's is good: Unearthly Child, Aztecs, Time Meddler, Dalek Invasion of Earth

Troughton's is ok: Ice Warriors, seeds of death, tomb, krotons

Hartnell's misses "The Romans", which is one of his best serials. "The War Machines" is a lot of fun too, though the effects look naff these days. I always thought "Dalek Invasion of Earth" was crap, but the ending is pretty iconic.

Troughton's misses "The Mind Robber", "The Invasion" & "The War Games" which are all brilliant, while bizarrely including "The Krotons", which is rubbish.

That Christmas Day timeslot's a bit of a double-edged sword. Sticks us right opposite Corrie, doesn't it?

Honestly, heretical as it sounds, I'd have preferred 5:00 opposite Paul O'Grady and his dogs on the other side.

I want to watch important episodes as well!

These are the best of collections. Each has four serials. For some reason they are priced 9.99 - 19.99 rather than uniformly. Also, looks like Colin Baker gets the shaft - I can't find a collection for him.

Hartnell:
An Unearthly Child
The Aztecs
The Time Meddler
The Dalek Invasion of Earth

Troughton:
The Ice Warriors
Seeds of Death
The Tomb of the Cybermen
The Krotons

Pertwee:
Spearhead from Space
The Three Doctors
The Green Death
The Planet of the Spiders

Tom Baker:
Genesis of the Daleks
The Hand of Fear
The Talons of Weng-Chaing
The Deadly Assassin

Davison:
Castrovalva
The Visitation
Earthshock
The Caves of Androzani (which I've already seen)

McCoy:
Time and the Rani
The Happiness Patrol
Silver Nemesis
Remembrance of the Daleks

Cheers. Wonder how Strictly fits into all this.

5pm seems plausible.

It *might* do, but ITV's schedules haven't been locked down yet, so we'll see. I'm a bit nervous about a Corrie battle, I have to admit. It partially depends on how CTM does as a leadin, I guess. And, for that matter, how Strictly does as a leadin for CTM. Now that could be interesting!

6:15 is ludicrously early for Midwife, too. The whole point of it being on Christmas Day is that it gives the BBC a prestigious Downton-beater... and they stick it in late afternoon! Madness.

Who and Midwife probably should have been swapped. I'd be very unsurprised if there was a gentleman's agreement in place about Midwife vs. Corrie, and Who's been moved later as competition.

Deadly Cyclone

Pride of Iowa State
Wonder when it will air in the US. Also need to figure out where to watch it since I will be away from my apartment and my parents don't get BBC America...

Good, that'll allow me to continue my Christmas tradition of ducking out at 7pm to go home, die on the sofa and watch Doctor Who with the wife

Doesn't ring true to me. My gut feeling is that they're curious how the Strictly audience would take to Midwife, it might open it up to some people who haven't encountered it normally. Do bear in mind that it is - most likely - going up against Emmerdale in this situation.

Fact is, though, BBC are in an odd position this year of having a bit too much stuff which deserves a Christmas Day airing, and not enough hours to really squeeze it all in nicely. It's a good job Sherlock's a bit too complicated for Christmas Day!

Debating whether to wait and watch the Christmas special on Boxing Day when it airs here in Australia, or pull a Day of the Doctor and stay up late to watch it with the Brits.

McCoy:
Time and the Rani
The Happiness Patrol
Silver Nemesis
Remembrance of the Daleks

Time and the Rani?! That's arguably the worst story Doctor Who ever aired, competing with The Twin Dilemma and Love and Monsters. McCoy's my Doctor and that's a pretty bad list, Silver Nemesis is one of the weaker episodes of that season as well. If the idea was to ensure the selected episodes weren't all from his final season, I'd have gone for:

Dragonfire*
Remembrance Of The Daleks
The Curse Of The Fenric
Survival

(*An ideal list would swap this out for Happiness Patrol, Greatest Show In The Galaxy or Ghost Light, but if McCoy's dodgy first season has to have a representative, the episode which introduced Who's finest companion at least has that going for it)

Ironically she's horrible in dragonfire, before jumping straight into amazing in Remembrance.

I still think Ian is the best companion, but she's definitely a close second.

Looking at that list of classic stories makes me realise how little I've seen.

I think I might try and work my way through some stuff during the massive gap following Christmas. I wish we had a Doctor Who book club style set up, my commitment to sitting down and watching old stuff is terrible without some kind of motivation/peer pressure.

If I missed it earlier in the thread, exterminate me, but Best Buy has Day of the Doctor a week early as an exclusive. $21.99 for the Blu-Ray.

You leave Love and Monsters out of this, we don't need to have the debate about why that is a good albeit slightly flawed episode again.

Speaking of classic Who, I want to buy the Enemy of the World DVD but I found it is just a basic release, no added extras or anything, might hold out for a special edition release later on down the road.

In...Journey To The Centre of The TARDIS I think it is? He's dusting the control panel and gives her a swipe with his cloth. Not direct contact, sure, but enough to get everyone up in arms at his mildly sexist ways.
I would really like to see how sexually aggressive a female Doctor would be.

So everyone thinks that the boyfriend thing is just a clever lie for Clara's family, right?

That scene at the dinner table is gonna be great. I can feel it.

Glad to see we'll get one last bit of Matt being awkward in a normal human situation.

*Nods* The Romans is great, a historical black comedy.

Or just to make it more interesting when he regenerates, haha.

But that's how the kids she cares for see the Doc anyway? So that makes sense. I presume the Doctor assumes giving someone a spank is what being a boyfriend involves.
