Just watched the episode yesterday and I really liked it. I thought it was paced way too fast for a season opener, but it was still good. I like last series opener better. The silence are creepy as shit. It was also kind of creepy to see the Doctor lose his patience. How he acted in the Tardis seemed kind of odd to me, he always follows random clues and summons yet this one he doesn't want to trust River to go on one? Just seemed off.

You must have never ever watched classic Who episodes.

Yeah, I've never had the chance. Got into Who with New Who about 2 years ago. I've been interested in checking some old who out, just haven't had the chance.

Earlier I was pondering if we've seen the silence before 'The Impossible Astronaut' and found this little blog post. They all seamed to be a quite wishful apart from:

"The Big Bang - There are cloaked figures behind the Sarcophagi in the museum; a third figure moves out of shot at the edge of the screen at about 13:31"

Checked and over the shoulder of Amelia is a sarcophagus leaning with a cloaked figure holding it up. The next shot shows the figure standing straight and the sarcophagus standing freely..

Is this the 'silence' sneaking in (much like badwolf/the cracks in time/the master before, except this would be the first to cross a series boundary) or another classic dodgy Doctor Who-ism?

If it's intentional, Moffat's a genius!

Good theory, but I'm pretty sure it's just a stand. :-/

WhoGAF, I'm going dark. I can't stand spoilers, and not knowing when I can catch each episode (should be every week, but who knows), I don't want anything ruined.

With that said, I thought this first episode was fantastic. Can't wait for the next episode, and the rest of the season. I think it's going to be great.

These new Doctors are much friendlier, patient and jovial than the older ones. Personally it's nice to see the cranky come to the surface every now and then.

I definitely liked it for a change. Just not having seen it before, it came off as creppy and odd. But it was definitely refreshing to see a different reaction out of the Doctor for once.

I probably just missed the post with the avatars, but here's a few I made anyway in case people wanted:

Click for the Album!

Might wanna bookmark, since I'll probably add more avas from future episodes here. Can add a link to the OP if you want.

Can I reserve the one with the two Silents please? Really would like that but I'm at an internet spot at the airport right now and can't use it as my avatar until I'm home.

Friendly yes, but Eccleston and Smith both have a bit of that "I'm an asshole" thing going for them that Number 1 had.

I think Smith in particular plays the Doctor brilliantly. During the first sequence inside the tardis I got a bit of a flash of impatient, rude, occasionally genocidal seven.

Something that came off as a bit odd to me.

The Doctor is brilliant, how could River having Amy ask him how old he was not instantly tip him off that they've delt with his future self.

Yeah, I find it hard to believe he doesn't completely know whats going on. He should have probably figured it out just by the card. If Amy and River can figure out it's him, I'm sure the Doctor had an inkling. Also to get there and be slapped for something he didn't do, and to be asked his age. I'm sure he knows what's up.

Waters of Mars doesn't count as "I'm an asshole"?

I figured from him sitting with his head in his hands after telling them all to go home, that he knew something bad was on the way...

Certainly by the time he comes back and they all have a beach picnic, he seems to know almost exactly what's going to go down. Hence why he's trying to drink wine and saying things like "A lot more happens in 69 than anyone remembers... human beings, I thought I'd never get done saving you" -- he's obviously speaking there with the knowledge of everything that he's gone through in this episode and its conclusion... maybe everything thats gone on in the whole of Series 6... we'll see!

So I wonder if they're gonna save him, or if their adventures are going to find some context which means they shouldn't save him.

So:

Why are the aliens wearing suits?
Why does the little girl only contact President Nixon?

Those are questions not too many people are asking.

Creepy monsters/aliens are more creepy with suits.

Maybe there will be a more proper explanation, but it seem to me part of the design.

And for the other question, maybe will be answered as well...

How many other people found them creepier because of old Slendy?[/QUOTE]

I've heard about Slenderman, but know nothing other than it's a long, thin thing in a suit. Mind giving a quick rundown of the story there?

Fuck you, Moffat. I went to bed at 2:30 instead of 12:30 because I kept turning to look behind me... just in case.

I'm going to walk around with a notepad from now on so I can send messages to myself like a low-tech Hank Venture.

In case anyone hasn't seen The Graduate, Mrs Robinson is an older woman that seduces a younger man - hence Rivers reaction.

This and the following for my favorite scenes.

Doctor: There she is with that "He's doing something amazing face!"

River: This is my normal face.

Doctor: I know. /suave

Fail out bailed
As others mentioned, I like that this doctor can get a little angry and spiteful.
We saw it last season with the big space whale thing, and in a weird perverse way with the weird space LSD dream trip episode where he revealed an inner self-hatred and a desire to play his companions against each other to fill his loneliness and inadequacy.
I suspect, we'll see even more this season

ALSO, would definitely dig a shop of a silent in the shadows behind my avatar, but its beyond my skill :)

Exactly why I think they are so creepy. Love the slenderman stuff. I just wish the Slenderman youtube series would get updated more often (marble hornets, tribe twelve and everyman hybrids)

Mecklemore Is My Favorite Wrapper
Well, goddamn it. Amazon instant video is bullshit. It has the episode as available to purchase (and is in fact the 4th most purchased episode right now). So, naturally, I buy it. It charges my CC, then comes up with "Sorry, due to licensing, this video is not available."

WTF is that shit about? Anybody got any other ideas?

Added a metric ton (well, 26) new avatars to the gallery, making just under 50 avatars from this episode alone. You'd do very well to keep an eye on it. :D

Wooo the silence is after you!

Any chance of one of the Doctor sitting down in the Tardis when he begins questioning everyone , you know the "Don't play games with me"

Incidentally, it's really hard to get clear grabs of Matt Smith because he's *always* moving. His arms, legs, face, head... he's NEVER still.

setup: Film student working on a student project slowly gets more stressed out before bailing on the project and switching schools. One of his friends keeps the tapes. They don't keep in touch. 3 years later, the friend who has the tapes (jay) stumbles upon where he stored them and decides to go through some to see what his friend (alex) was so stressed out by. The concept of the youtube channel starts with jay posting unusual bits he finds on the tapes as he goes. Then, madness.

As has become tradition, I watched the first episode with my nieces. They got a bit fidgety during the talky bits, but the older one liked the Silence (the younger one got a bit scared). Plenty of game-playing potential with the Silence.

River & the Doctor can't be moving in opposite directions all the time - the River in this episode is later in her own timeline than The Big Bang since she knows Rory.

The Doctor's 'death' was a bit pointless since we know it'll get undone. It would have been better if it was something that could have stuck - like we see Matt Smith start to regenerate but don't see the result for some reason.

Didn't realise Nixon was the Jonathan Creek guy until I saw Confidential.

I wonder if Moffat is starting to lose the 'casual' audience. You might not care, but the show is probably dead without them.

So what exactly are the Silence up to? Last year they wanted to blow up the Universe, and know they're happy invading Earth?

They've been here the entire time. Its only now that they are revealing themselves to people.

Probably not always reverse, but we've seen one end of it (Silence in the Library) and the other half is pretty obvious, but those are the end-points for both of them and the order in the middle is usually very wonky.

I still love the fact in this episode the doctor was trying to cloak the TARDIS in to the Oval Office and River is pretty much the one doing all the actual work.

Was there ever actually any time in TPO/TBB where rory actually introduced himself to River?

Because the big bang is after what's going on now for river. ("next time we meet everything changes"..)

But she's probably met rory at some other event previously in her timeline.

Not necessarily. It may simply mean that Rory is going to encounter River again at some point in his future. So in some future episode (from our perspective) when River needs to be introduced to Rory will be the last time he meets her.

She calls Rory 'the Centurion' in The Big Bang - she thought he was just a Roman. That image posted above also agrees with my reading.
