Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

I really enjoyed the level where you're in that giant suit fighting mega demons alot more than i thought i would. Very well done!
I personally didn't. Found it butt ugly , low textures, and played mindless.

Chapter 5 dragon level though? That's the best part of the game so far.

Let id make a new panzer dragoon game, fuck!

So the super shotgun is king in this game?
What's your go-to weapon?
Probably 1. Super Shotty, 2. Chainshot, 3. The Cycler. 1 and 2 may actually be tied.

Yeah, honestly that was one of my takeaways too. The Serrat, turret, and Atlan segments all felt out of place to me. I mean, they were fun, but they didn't really add more to me. I think they made them with the intention of providing more variety. But I think the problem is all of those segments absolutely pail in comparison to the standard on the ground gameplay that actually shines and outshines all of those moments. The more I think about it, I feel like I would've enjoyed the overall flow of the game a lot more without those present.

Finally got to play this and after 2 levels... it's pretty good! I'm an old school Doom guy and also liked 2016 but on the other hand couldn't stand Eternal.

While everything looks a bit too Diablo and there's too much story and cut scenes, the game just feels awesome to play and I'd say this is closest to the original in the new trilogy.

What I did was recolor green projectiles to yellow/orange so they can be identified but so they don't stand out too much, removed screen effects and stun markers and enabled auto run. Great fun!

Going back in fellas. Things picked up a bit last night. Hopefully I find the missing piece of the puzzle. Good chance there's a weapon or ability out there to make it all click for me.

I played 4 levels and I dont like it, such a disappointment.

Sure the gameplay is still excellent, but everything else feels like a downgrade. And what is the point of the Dark Age thematic? Wtf are these characters and cinematics?

I am not even sure I want to continue, playing this game just makes me want to reinstall Eternal instead.

Chapter 3 or 4, where you are in that big mech suit thing?

What was that about? 😬 Played like absolute shit, and has been done a million times before much better. That was disappointing!

That was chapter 3. Not surprising considering how awful the turret section was at the end of the chapter 1...or was it chapter 2?

I'm on chapter 9 and if the dragon section was really so small then it's basically nonexistent. I thought the dragon minigame will be used more, or does it come at a later point?

Decided to try it instead of waiting for god knows when the pathtracing update arrives.

It took a while for me to get into this, after Eternal the first few stages feel way too simple, but thats to be expected. I am nearing the end and the game already felt longer than 2016 and Eternal combined by around the midpoint. Dont like the gunplay as much, the upgrade system isnt really interesting at all, but the dope maps with bigger enemy counts and the way enemies get damaged make up for it. Focusing more on a shield (which is great tbh) than guns in an FPS game is really weird, not necessarily in a bad way.

Anyway, is there any surer way to trigger glory kills (and on more enemies) or is standing far away from target and jumping the only way to trigger them?

Game seems to be bombing pretty hard on Steam, no CCU thread yet ?
A game across multiple platforms with various amounts of success over the recent iterations is not bombing, I assure you. Even if the CCU on Steam isn't a crazy high number. It's not extraordinarily low either. We don't need a CCU thread.

because it is bad.
It's really not. It's very likely because people are playing it on different platforms. DOOM 2016 and Eternal did not fail, this one won't either.

I just beat this game on my PS5 Pro. I enjoyed it and will give it an 8.5, but I think Microsoft made some big mistakes with this game.

1. The price: It should have been 60 dollars base, not 70, with more extras for special editions.
2. Game Pass: Why spend tens of millions on a game that you will give away for free? This hurts Steam sales.
3. Denuvo: The high system requirements on PC should have been a barrier enough, but adding Denuvo is just plain stupid.
4. The game could have used better marketing in the gameplay department. The game is fast—I think even faster than Doom Eternal if you know what you are doing.

In short, I don't think this game is for every Doom fan, but Microsoft sabotaged their own multi-million-dollar IP out the gate. Very stupid. Considering they ruined Halo, I am not surprised.

Man, I tell you what.

This game is fucking awesome.

I'm only at the 4th chapter, but this shit is fucking dope.

I really like the mechanics; the different abilities and uses for the weapons, the mobility, the gunplay, the enemy variety, that fucking shield... awesome.

Then of course it looks amazing, the world and demons are just a feast for the eyes, and that sound! Fucking outstanding. The music and effects are on another level.

I dunno what to say, y'all, except this is what it's all about for me. I feel like 1994.

Well goddamn done. :messenger_horns:

And now if you excuse me, i'm gonna play some Doom TDA.
Anyways ID gets credit by not making another Gaas Shooter with microtransactions and seasonal content with multiplayer but pure singleplayer fun.
So i'm 11 hours into the game and only at chapter 10 i think. Looking for loot and the right exit takes time for me. Is anyone else behind the usual playtime?

Press is trying to tear this apart for weird reasons lol. Pretty creative video. Explains weird negativity surrounding it and people coming here to troll the game.

This is the dumbest pos game I've played all year. I previously thought this game was a 3/5 but that's way too generous. If the name Doom wasn't tied to this, the steam numbers would be under 1000. It's not even just a bad Doom game. It's just a bad shooter.

I haven't sold a game in over 10 years and I might finally break that trend.

That video was odd. He was mostly explaining why he felt it was boring by comparing it to the Kiss Dynasty album when Kiss started doing more disco-like songs and fans didn't like it.

I'm no DOOM fan but early game I can agree with the issues brought up. It's too open both in map design and what tools you have access to. Should've made it tighter and held back on giving you stuff to use so you have more scenarios where you feel awesome from just barely overcoming an obstacle. And the shield bash and parry and executioner moves feel OP, often you barely even have to use the guns.

Liking this more than 2016 or eternal

Anyway, I'm near the very end, all my previous points still stand. The game is very good but no instant classic, I'm just happy *somebody* is making quality FPS campaigns nowadays.

That is true. There is way too much multiplayer focus in the industry.
And the game is running extreeemely well on PC. That's an important achievement too these days when UE5 is out there taking over the industry with all it's issues. MS should use idTech8 in all their games.

It does have less emphasis on guns. Any encounter I start with shield bash followed by melee combo on main big guy. After that, wrap up arena with guns.

Which level have you reached? There are definitely encounters in 4th-5th areas that require effort to overcome.

Ultimately I am finding this to be ultimate power fantasy. It throws way too many demons at you, and you are suitably powerful to deal with those. I think it balances.

The flying sequences remind me of Turok Evolution. I'm trying to speed through this so can check it off my "must finish Doom" mental checklist.

Easier said than done. Best of the studio using it already has some experience with it and they are willing to fork it.

I am not sure Id is setup for the burden of maintaining engine support for other teams. It would start making the engine a bit worse for Id themselves once choices their game teams would want to make are delayed or blocked because it would impact engine support for other games.

I like this game and Kiss' disco album. Come at me bros! Seriously tho, this game is sound gameplay wise. I'm just more disappointed on the technical side (on consoles). Lower resolution than their previous games, low resolution textures everywhere, some demons seems lower poly than they were on Eternal, and the way too high black level in HDR.

I wish it's not, the game is an absolute banger and I say this coming directly from E33, I wasn't even supposed to stay playing it but it's so good that a "let's see how my GPU runs it" ended up in me pausing E33 and not giving a fuck lol.

BTW I wish we could turn off speed lines, they are almost impossible to ignore and the game is graphically so beautiful... I'm basically turning auto sprint on and off all the time depending on if I'm in a place I want to contemplate or in a fight in part because of that (also because going fast all the time doesn't let me appreciate the amazing art, almost everything in this game is a setpiece for me).

I just realized if you do a jump and then melee finisher on a dazed enemy it will do a special kill. I think it was like that in Eternal, too, but in that he'd curb stomp them.
Realised this yesterday too. Was awesome. Also, I jumped and held down the shield throw button and everything went slow motion. I'm positive the game doesn't tell you about this.

Actually from what i've seen the games balance is very good. Despite the make your own difficulty sliders.
Nightmare is hard but not impossible so people like DraQu can finish it without dying and "normal" people can actually finish it too.
Its not that hard like in Eternal its just "right".

Loving dismembering those demons so far. I don't know why they tacked on so much story, it's just head off in that direction and kill everything you see.

Things I'd like to change:
- I've turned off the screen border effects, but I still have to see low health warning at 50% and critical health at 30%. Shut up, game, 'tis but a scratch.
- Sprinting is pointless. I always want to move fast, but auto sprint has a slight delay before it kicks in, and you still don't sprint when moving sideways.
- Bodies evaporate almost instantly, when I want to see the mess I've made.
- Bright green for things you can parry looks a bit out of place. I can see why it's there (and I wish they had it in Expedition 33) but it doesn't fit the overall aesthetic.
- Wish you could splatter the humans too.

What a damn fine game though.
Can you turn off the screen effect of sprint?

Man nobody's make combat like ID!

Plays completely different from Eternal and all the better for it and Eternal is my Favourite FPS ever.

After 4 levels I think I can confidently say it's better than 2016.

Rock on!

I'm only at chapter 4. It's strange for a shooter, wouldn't call it that yet. I feel like I use different variations of shield attacks and melee attacks more often than shooting.
It does become challenging though, I changed to ultra violence and then I started dying. It becomes awfully hectic with all the needed special attacks and parries and finishers etc. Especially on PC for me when using keyboard and mouse, I need to try using a controller, I stumble around on the keyboard when I get stressed.

Yeah the hardest difficulities in eternal were frankly annoying with the crazy speed and need for constant ammo refill, chaindaw, glory kills. Especially with the powered up totems - i hated that shit

By the 4th or 5th level you gotta be playing on Nightmare for a good challenge.

I just finished the 19th level and holy shit. They trap you in and fuck you with hordes of brutal demons and environmental hazards. I probably should have switched back to the flail for more shots and the burning/armor effect. I got killed around 10 times on 2 levels and had to replay crazy hard shit over and over until I mastered it. It was hardcore and really got my adrenaline going. Love it.
