Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

I'm putting in a refund for this shit.

  • I didn't care for how much movement came into play with Eternal as who the fuck wants to platform in first person in a FPS game but this shit is braindead.
  • Half of the levels I've played you could probably just stand in place and get pretty far.
  • The mech sections are garbage and feel like shit. Just walk around and spam the punch button and since it's a mech it doesn't respond very well either (which I get but like it's fucking Doom it should feel responsive).
  • The flying parts are some of the worst sections in a game I've played since like fucking Lair on PS3. Lair is better then this.
  • The music isn't great and a disappointment compared to Mick Gordon's stellar work.
  • The story is a throwaway to the point where it's like why even bother.
  • Fucking color vomit everywhere. You've got red and green shit flowing at you constantly and it's a mess especially up against the grim dark hellscape.
  • The shield literally makes the game braindead as you can just hold the shield up the entire time if you want to absorb damage.
Edit: I'm being a bit hyperbolic, but I really just don't like the game and found it incredibly dull and boring to play. I'm not gonna edit my original wording though.
I don't think it's a bad game but I can definitely see why people would feel this way.

The crossbow is the friggin Heretic crossbowww !!!
It's definitely visually similar yes. Hugo also referred to the ball projectile of the Reaver as a "Chaos Sphere" in the Chaos Realm/PlayStation trailer. An id Software developed Hecatomb with the melee combat mechanics from TDA would be fantastic.

lmao this heaven splitter rune
doomguy just turned into captain america with mjolnir now
man all these runes are so cool. adds so much flavor to the game

My (probably) unpopular opinion.

Gauntlet > Flail & Mace

Other than their requisite level challenges, I don't use either the Flail or the Mace. The gauntlet is decently powerful but most importantly it has the fastest charge and more attacks (with upgrades). When I need ammo fast, it's the best thing to use instead of a melee that may be more powerful but will also take considerably longer to charge in the absence of green parry attacks.
The mace does take forever to charge and so I like the gauntlets too for the same reason, but the Lobotomy upgrade for the Impaler means headshots with that weapon will drastically shorten the melee cooldown. Headshots are effectively free too given that you can enter slo-mo when charging the shield throw to line them up.

I can see the preference, the speed and all that, but honestly after getting the Mace I just upgraded it to max and never changed it.

In combination with the Super Shotty it was pretty much one-shot territory, never ran out of bullets the whole game and I think all bosses and mini bosses have the green parry attacks, so there was always that extra free melee attack.

It's fine to not like Eternal and prefer Doom 2016 more, but that's not what is happening here on GAF, people are just outright hating on it with no appreciation of it still being a very well designed game, they have an inability to still appreciate something whether they like it or not. It's just like the Last of Us 2, the story is controversial and has some flaws so the game is automatically a big pile of steaming shit with no appreciation that the game has some of the highest production values in presentation and gameplay. There are the Eternal haters camp and the Eternal lovers camp, the difference is, no one from the Eternal lovers camp is shitting on Doom 2016. Eternal haters are just shitting on the game regardless, it's game design execution is AAA tier. But unfortunately some gamers no fuck all about how games are actually made and can't think on any higher level other than 'I don't like it, the game is shit'.. Saying something is not your cup of tea and saying something is shit, are two different things. The hate Eternal gets is unwarranted. I'm all for people preferring Doom 2016 but there are so many toxic posts about Eternal implying it's one of the worst games ever made!
Coming from Doom 2016, I expected so much more from Eternal and it didn't deliver. Which makes the game, FOR ME, not great. I didn't hate it but the design decisions I didn't find were what I wanted in a game like Doom. The Dark Ages has swung it back further to 2016 and I'm much more appreciative of that.
As for The Last Of Us 2, it wasn't a great game, no matter the high production values. Gameplay was passable but for a game that relies solely on it's story to get you through, it failed for me. Big time.

Doom 2016 was a great game, but FOR ME, Eternal was an evolution on a stale fps formula, not stale from Doom 2016 but stale from the FPS genre in general.. It took a genre and tipped it upside down and imo made Doom a more fleshed out fps. Arena shooters are meant to play aggressive. Doom atmosphere fits the bill. I'm playing Dark Ages now and I still like it, it's fun, but there is too many quiet moments walking through the open maps, it's not as exciting. it's a bit plain jane. You can tell just buy the UI and other design decisions, the game has been stripped back. Thinking about Dark Ages, I'd probably say Doom 2016 is better. I think all 3 are great but this one is the weakest.

And now what you are saying about Last of Us 2, I absolutely disagree, it was a fantastic game. We couldn't be further from opposite on gaming. I can tell you that.

I'm at the first flying dragon chapter and this shit is great! I like the change up and it gives me some real old Halo vibes.

Cranked the music all the way up too. Helps a bunch. The ambient stuff is awesome.

PSA / Protip:

Farming weapon mastery challenges can be made a lot easier on the "Leader" enemies, the one's who only die via RT/R2 melee attacks.

I've farmed Shotgun, Super Shotgun, Ravager, Rocker Launcher etc on those cause you can just keep shooting them even if their health bar is zero, they don't die, but your hits to them still count to the mastery.

Also, some pics, spoilers through chapter 19:

Gyat Dayum. I legit can't wait to see how this wraps up and if they directly tie it into Doom 2016.

Fucking amazing man. Love it. 2016>Dark Ages>Eternal for me so far. The energy and attitude here is so much more my speed. Also I can't be the only one who hears early Metallica in some of the riffs. I really love the music. Crank that shit up.

what are you playing on, is this PC because I'm on PS5 Pro and the lighting and image doesn't look as good as that! With the HDR issue, I tried the colourblind mode temp fix and I still think it's not quite right, turned off HDR and picture is more flat. Then I turned HDR back on and adjusted the HDR Brightness up a few points from the default 2.5 which I believe makes it look closest to what it should be (i personally think that's what's broken because their explanation with recommended 1.0 and sitting on 2.5 default - something wrong there!)

I'm early on just picked up the plasma gun in chapter 2. The game started slow and kind of boring for me, but as my arsenal improves I'm starting to enjoy it a bit more. The tooltip tutorials are useful and all, but I'm tempted to disable them just because of how many there are.

It's really annoying that the border screen effects are not separated. I have auto sprint on and I hate the white border effect, it's fucking stupid, but I want the red low health effect as otherwise I don't know in the heat of battle I'm about to die until I just fall to the ground with the death animation. I do get the audible low health beep but still. I really need this indication so now I have to put up with the sprint border effect.

Great game until the game breaking crash on Level 21 that means you can't reload and can't even restart the level from the beginning. I guess the game is dead now? Seems pretty dead…

I'm on the Pro and didn't adjust anything with the picture.

i went ahead and disabled daze highlight and daze circles and parry circles
i actually like this much better and can focus on combat better. you still get the E button prompt on dazed enemies so it is all fine

I was loving this game up until about Chapter 11. I'm on 14 now and I just want it to end. I even lowered the difficulty sliders so I can just about one shot everything and run through.

The core gameplay is awesome. Learning all the enemies and the best way to kill them and experimenting with all the guns is fun. My problem is you get to a point where you've seen the same enemies so many times it's a chore to play. You enter a big open space and run around going through the motions it gets very repetitive. The game is too long for what they have and the level design/puzzles/secrets run out of steam half way through. I'm skipping the secrets and missing out on upgrades because I don't want to run around this big empty levels looking for dolls and pages of a codex you couldn't get me to read at gunpoint. Even the levels themselves aren't much to look at after awhile. It gets so bland.

This would be a good game if it was 10 hours with dense levels.

I wish there were different patterns for the projectiles for each enemy type. Each enemy has a specific pattern that never changes so it gets a bit reptitive after awhile.

I don't think the same enemies are the problem here, 2016 and Eternal were the same, but the challenge was different, you didn't care, you didn't have time to notice the same enemies, IMO, in part because each enemy in previous 2 had different mechanics to kill, the game encouraged you to mix and match - a few times to aggressively -, here you can finish the game with just one weapon and parry - melee, parry - melee and so on.

The same for the last boss here, which is wildly easier compared to Eternal, Jesus, there the boss didn't give you any breathing room and it was way more imaginative.

You know it's a bit funny how this time there are these big open areas where you don't need to constantly move, in fact the game encourages you to use the shield more often, and in the previous 2 it throws you in more cramped spots and you need to always be on the move.

It may seem like I hate the game, far from it, I enjoyed it, the art style is amazing, the locations, but I don't know, I guess I expected something more.

Then it would most certainly not be worth the price tag for most. If they went that route they'd have to give it more modes/content or something.

I enjoyed my time with the game, but even as a fan of the game and DOOM IP I feel like the game is pretty damn lacking in the content department with a $70 price tag.

I think that's a problem in general with the industry. People expect a long game for $70, but I'd rather have a good game. 10 hours of good content stretched to 20 ruins the experience in this one. If this was 10 hours and really good I would've played it twice and got the same play time out of it. At this rate I don't know if I'm even motivated to finish it.

This is the one I was jamming last night

Perfect combo of quiet and then an explosion of old ass Metallica like riffs with that double bass pedal
😎👌🏼

I FAR prefer "narrative" games like Silent Hill 2 as they are thought provoking stories and with SH2, tend to focus on a psychological narrative. Basically the opposite to The Last of Us 2 with it's big budget and crap Hollywood style story the gaming industry is trying to make today.

Eh. I mean, of course I want a good game, but I also want to feel like $70 is worth the price. Which, can certainly be subjective as a whole. But it's kind of an issue in my eyes when previous games have more. I'd always assume that sequels should want to do more and do better, not go backward.

I was facing off against one of those pinky riders last night and there was a moment were had this back and forth parrying shots to each other. BONG! BONG! BONG! BONG!

That moment where you finally connect and then run up and then smash their head off

I have no idea how they managed to make the mech part boring, but they somehow accomplished it. What a bummer after the trailers.

Probably the biggest negative for me, personally. Outside of it just being a campaign and nothing else.

The turret, Serrat (dragon), and Atlan (mech) segments just didn't feel super entertaining to me. At first they felt neat, but I felt like they overstayed their welcome pretty quickly. I would've much rather had more regular levels personally. Still enjoyed really enjoyed the game though.

I think developers really struggle representing scale. It's a combination of not feeling big enough and the world not feeling destructible enough. When I played Armored Core VI, I had a similar problem with that game too - you just feel like a normal sized character and not the huge mech you are.

I also thought in Doom that the mech section was so simplistic from a mechanical point of view. Hit demons a lot with left click and then finish them with right click. I was half asleep by the time the level ended and couldn't wait to get back to the normal gameplay (which so far i'd just about place above Eternal - it doesn't have the highs of Eternal, but also doesn't have the lows).

Up to Chapter 14 and man a lot of thoughts.

Between Eternal and this I think Team ID are better at teaching gameplay mechanics and getting players gud than anyone else in the industry.

It's all very well having a deep combat system but if a game can't teach you to apply it who cares.

Well The Dark Ages really knows who to teach you it's mechanics. Through a combination of heavy incentives and sometimes outright force you really start to learn how to parry, shield bash, shield throw and melee.

The enemies force you e.g. shield guys for the throw and heavy demons for the parry then your guns heavily incentive e.g. the shredder for the throw and the Chainball for the parry.

Before you know it you start incorporating all your abilities and weapons in a more free flow organic way and it's feels fantastic.

Oh and I think this is best roster of guns in any of the modern dooms. They feel chunky and satisfying to use and really compliment the shield combat.

Unlike Eternal AND 2016 you really are free to stick with your favourite weapon for most of the game. I will elaborate more on why in another post😉

I just got a patch on Game Pass, whats it about?

OOM: The Dark Ages Update 1.003 Patch Notes

Bug Fixes & Stability Improvements

  • Fixed multiple crash issues that could occur when starting a new map.
  • Addressed crashes related to loading late-game campaign saves.
  • Resolved stability issues that occurred when charging or throwing the Shield Saw.

Alongside these complaints, Bethesda has acknowledged several known issues across PC and console platforms:

Known Issues on Console:
  • Switching profiles without pre-existing save data can transfer data incorrectly between profiles.
  • Loading cloud or Xbox saves via the Xbox PC app may result in incorrect resolution settings and inaccessible video options.
Known Issues on PC:

  • Enabling G-Sync or V-Sync with Multi Frame Generation on RTX 50-series GPUs can crash the game.
  • V-Sync appears enabled even when disabled alongside FrameGen on RTX 40/50 GPUs.
  • Changing resolutions in fullscreen and using Alt-Tab can cause the desktop resolution to match the new game resolution.
  • Alt-Tabbing during launch may cause the game to remain in the background and not open.
  • OBS users may experience screen freezes when Alt-Tabbing from fullscreen mode.
  • Manual window resizing with FSR FrameGen enabled can freeze the game.
  • Unplugging a second monitor during gameplay may result in game freezes.
  • MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner overlays can lead to game instability.

Well, this isn't quite accurate for Eternal, not mixing weapons that enemies are weakest against, you would run much much faster out of ammo than here in TDA., especially when you're dealing with Maykr drones or Blood Maykrs.

I don't understand the heavy critique to Eternal, is the game really that divisive, did a good part of people hate played the game? Steam score is pretty high, not that it matters too much.
