Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

Yeah. No doubt that's why. The skeevy uncle is still clearly an alcoholic so it's not like they went the Gandia route (which replaced all alcohol with coffee).
Now that you mention it, Java and Pike seem to have quite a few similarities^^ I hope the two games have more in common, I never found another RPG that conveyed the same feeling of excitement and adventure. So far, DQ VII gives me a similar vibe.

So ahhhh, how do I acquire MP early in the game> Sure would be nice to use these spells I'm learning....

resting at an inn will gain you the MP. i know you start the game with zero and gain max MP and spells beyond that once you start leveling up but you can't really use them until you stay at an inn once.

Just started the opening 20minutes and man did i get hit with the nostalgia feel. Even so it feels like a whole new game.

The menus are a little slow and I wish I could put my own character on AI control but otherwise I'm enjoying it. It's both fresh because I've never played it and old school in design.

Where do I get the class system? I just got 4th party member and not sure if the order you unlock things is constant.

Have you reached Dharma Temple yet?

Edit: Uh, I mean Alltrades Abbey. :p

I never played the original, but somehow I figured those dumb floor switch puzzles weren't there. That's a really lame change, even if it saves time

The ruins had numerous puzzles and rooms that were removed in the remake. You should play the original game sometime. :p

I've noticed zero ghosting. Hell, I was impressed when I entered a well and the objects by the black background didn't ghost - a usual place for it to take place. Mind you I'm on N3DS with improved 3D so it may be that?
I'm also on a N3DS and it ghosts a lot for me, so, *shrug*

The over the shoulder view in battle makes all the difference.

my theory on the first character you meet when starting battles

maeve is maribel from the future and the two graves are the protagonist and kiefer

lets see if im right! grinding outside the village atm

aww just beat the first island. my theory was so cool :(

doesn't everyone grind till they can buy all the new equipment every time they get to a new shop? i thought that was standard. i even extra grind afterwards to make sure i have a nice little nest egg for the next round.

Finally have the rest of the weekend to dig into the game, I want to unlock Monster Meadow and the Streetpass features as soon as I can.

Well, just wanted to come back to edit, but yeah... "...at a reasonable price", heh.

Dragon Quest IV DS - Brand new copy for only $24:

Dragon Quest V DS - Brand new copy for only $27:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/201654014508

Up until last winter when the SE online store sold off a bunch of new copies, used copies of IV and V would average $45, new copies would go for over $60, it's never been easier to own both at very reasonable prices. Better to buy now before prices go up, same for other DS games, only a matter of time before collectors ruin the market.

I'm tempted to get this, I really wanted to play it as a kid for the longest time but never owned a PS1 and never tracked down a copy when I got a PS2 and 3.

But I'm pretty excited for the new Pokemon and don't want to be RPG'd out when that comes out.

Played a little bit today, opened the shrine of mysteries and now I have to look for the four things to open a door inside the temple. Sadly I was disappointed by my performance in the GREs today and that kinda sours my experience, so I will probably have to not play any games for a while and study. I'll be back after that though.

Yeah thanks, I must have missed the Inn when I first got to
Ballymolloy
.

Got me a copper sword, and now these battles are much easier.

Maturity, bitches.
Nintendo gonna Nintendo, the drinking in the (2nd island)
Emberville/Engow Fire Festival
was changed to tea. :eyeroll:

Worth it tho.

The village is based on Yorkshire
Emberdale is a pun on Yorkshire based TV show Emmerdale
. Drinking tea is what they do.

Oh too bad we don't have an official answer. But your interpretation makes sense.

Not sure about "official" answer, but the clues are all there. There's one towns person, I believe the same one that mentions how the town got renamed, that tells the story of the betrayal. No beating around the bush. They fucked up. I think you can yes/in into or out of the story, as you please, when speaking to this NPC.

Questions for those of you that follow the franchise more closely:

Any word if we are getting DQH II in the west?
Why haven't we heard anything on DQ XI in over a year?

Don't be sorry. Style Savvy is a great game. I haven't bought the new one yet but the last one was amazing.

Agreed, Style Savvy is awesome. As someone who has all three, Fashion Forward is the overall best game, but Trendsetters has better competitions. You will not be sorry. Plus, it is a little more budget friendly (discounts aside).

The official answer (which is strongly inferred rather than stated outright as a full sentence) is that Maeve
took the women because that's exactly what she was ordered to do. She mentioned that she was following orders. I let Hanlon kill her in the battle though, not sure if that bit of dialogue changes based in what you do, but I think she says that right before you fight her.

Everyone crying about Maribel not being able to hit anything for any worthwhile number: once you can send her on the Devo path, it gets better!
Whip it real good.

As for myself, around 20 hours and going slowly:
hit it "big enough" in the Casino and am currently in the process of taking back the Abbey.

So many. Even more touching ones, in my opinion. That's exactly what this game is about.

Fucking nice.

DQ is pretty much all about these small stories. New town, new story, new dungeon - that's the basic loop.

Maybe that's the reason I find these games so compelling.

Yeah, 130 hours worth. That's what the game's about. :)

It's amazing how much using CFW to force the New 3DS's extra CPU power helps the menu slowdowns. I wonder why it slows down to begin with, the Japanese version was so much snappier.

Aaaaand the accents are still terrible. Why must they translate these games this way?

Does the Japanese text use proportional fonts or monospaced? If it's monospaced then the conversion to proportional fonts might account for the lag.

Sounds nice. I just updated my N3DS so I wonder if I can still use CFW.

I was thinking that was it, although the Japanese version does use a proportional font, and furigana. It's probably still not as intensive as the translated version.

Oh nice! Is there a way to set it up to automatically load the game with the speedups? I've been using CFW for a while but still am not great with stuff like that, hah.

Makes it a shame that more developers/publishers don't just go "use that CPU power" without explicitly making more enhancements. Probably because of Q&A, or Nintendo's being weird again.

Using Luma, it's a setting you just turn on in the CFW itself. The settings menu is accessed by holding select when it boots. I set it to use the CPU and the extra L2 cache and it works great with the game.

I'm stuck. I tried googling but getting spoiled left and right...

So gaf need your help again.

The woodcutter. I need his help. He doesn't say anything but " ohohoh " like beginning of the game. I probably missed a trigger somewhere but I'm tired of the back and forth.

Dunno if you've passed this point or not yet but if you're still stuck-- visit the shack in the back right of the town that's in trouble

Just had my first close call during a boss fight,
those robot dudes with the two battles in a row
.

I mean, I like the little stories and everything, but once the difficulty picks up and the party unlocks more skills, the boss battles are where DQ really shines for me. Just classic planning moves in advance and hoping you don't get blindsided.

Can't wait for more boss battles. And the boss theme is really fantastic - even with midi, the snares banging fits an intense battle so well.

Just picked it up today and popped it to get a feel for it after what, 15 or 16 years since I last played it?

Completely smacks you with charm, there's just a certain something about it. Game looks entirely different than the old PS1 version, but in a very good way. Was kind of going to skip VIII, but I'm really digging this game again after so many years away.

I never did beat VII, I think I got as far as the Casino, or just beyond, and got obsessed with the card game and going for 5 slimes....

That is what I did the first time around on the PS1 version, until I completed Dharma Temple and gambled myself up a fortune.

This time I am avoiding grinding, just buying what I can afford and hoping for the best. I want my levels as low as possible for when I unlock job classes and can starting grinding them like no tomorrow.

Saved the second island. I can't remember if I found the boss easier or harder this time around.
