Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

When you unlock islands, is it worth also checking out the other places on it or just the main place?

For example, modern day Green Gardens (?) and the interconnecting town - worth it or just move on?

It seems like there is almost always a tablet piece in the dungeons when you revisit them.

Questions:

1) How do you activate StreetPass

2) Is there some DLC I need to get?

3) How close am I to the Abbey? I'm in the
tent
town.

1) Go to the Monster Meadows through the warp downstairs in the Haven. You need to get your first resident first

2) There's some DLC via the bar in the Haven. You need three residents

Did You go back to the dungeon. There is one in the boss room during the present day.

If not there is a handy shard hint under the misc item on the menu.
Yeah I went back, funny story segment there. I'm going to try the shard hint thing, didn't know about it

Got to the second island last night. The nostalgia, man.

I love the death animations on the enemies. The way they fall back, spin in the air, etc. is strangely satisfying. Not in a violent way or anything, but the animation on everything is so good, so that little touch adds a lot.

The other red fragment is in the present after
you restore ELLIE. You have to talk to the man that helped you and then talk to his grand daughter. They are both in the barracks in the South East corner of the town.

Thanks! thats the one I was missing. I'm pretty sure I had checked this room before, but i guess I had not :(. Finally.. progress! wasted about 1-2 hours going back to every dungeon/island in past/present u_u

Anyone know where you use Tombola tickets? This game is not very good at telling you what things do, though that's a recurring issue with the series.

Is there any downside to the fighter's final skill apart from "just" being single target? An attack that does high damage for 0 MP sounds suspiciously good.

If I recall correctly from the original it doesn't work on some enemies. Pretty good single target skill regardless though.

I like the animation for when an enemy makes you dance. The battle animations in general flow like butter, really.

It's wind element IIRC, although it's a great skill that your NPC's will often default to.

I've actually found them kind of stuttery, especially upon making contact with the enemy.

I am enjoying everything about this game except for the UI. So sluggish to move around in, and sometimes after saying something it will wait for you to press a button before giving you a prompt whereas other times it will just finish the sentence and go right into the prompt, so sometimes I end up doing something I didn't intend to do. And dealing with the bag! Holy cow!

But anyway. This is a good game and I am enjoying it. I just wanted to vent about the UI

It sounds like this is your first Dragon Quest, so I wanted to add that the UI's aren't normally this slugg'ish. I'm having a significantly difficult time handling the UI in VII myself, and while the ArtePiazza Dragon Quest games aren't known to be technical marvels, this is especially bad for the developer.

I might be mistaken, but I think I remember Aeana mentioning that there was some UI issues present in the Western release that weren't there in the original. I could be mistaken so it'd be great to get confirmation on that.

Is it normal that if you put the game in your 3DS, on the start up screen (so before you start up the game), you get the subtitle in Italian/Spanish in the European version? I bought a copy in Belgium and the box is in Dutch and the game is in English, so strange...

That's correct, and what's worse is Aeana also said that hacked firmware New 3DS's seem to have the lag mostly or completely gone because the custom firmware doesn't bottleneck the CPU/memory cache.

I really feel like this is a big missed opportunity for Nintendo it's really as simple as that, it isn't like they haven't enabled New 3DS features on other games in a much larger capacity, this is basically a toggle that dramatically improves performance.

We need to get some resident press sneak fuck to write an article on this and get Nintendo's attention.

First boss.

Is there another path I could take? Flee or defend? Feels like I missed something.

I've been in the
cave in which the high priestess is being held captive
dungeon for about 5 minutes and I already hate this place.

Send help.

Fleeing gives you no exp or gold and ends the battle immediately.

The Wooden Doll item also gives you no exp or gold, but does give you a unique cutscene and also ends the battle immediately.

Having done the Wooden Doll myself, I wish I had just got the exp and gold.

Damn!
I killed her for very little exp and gave the doll to the kid near the graves.

I wonder why they never explained this. I thought it was a single use save like y'know... all 'quick' saves?

Since when has Dragon Quest cared about basic gaming courtesies and conventions?

(
I made the same mistake in DQ5
). Fortunately the Mobile versions are a bit more transparent in what Quick Save actually is (it is doing it constantly).

Sorry if this has already been posted, but for a new page.

The strong and weak 3D settings are reversed, at least in the English language.

Weak is strong and strong is weak.

A little over 10 hours in. Really enjoying it. Can't wait to replay 8 on the 3DS. Imma also buy dragon quest heroes 2 (I already have dqh1) and dq builders in hopes that more sales will convince SE to bring over dq11. That and I want to play those games as well.

Thanks. I've only really played Dragon Warrior Monsters, and that has lots of good music.

The Monsters games (or at least the two I've played: Monsters and Monsters Joker 2) reference music from other games (Joker 2 had the field song from DWM even) while the mainline series sticks with mostly original songs.

The opening non-battle story is actually much longer in the PS1 version. About twice as long in fact. You work on the boat, have more running around in town, a little more of your uncle being an awful human being, and a full no-combat dungeon underneath the shrine before you get to murder your first slime.
Oh, wow. That's insane. Now I'm curious as to what that must've been like to experience in the 90's.

I actually thought "Wow, this is really unique. I've never done this in another RPG before. It's taking it's time and building up a sense of wonder and mystery nicely." And I was blown away to be playing a DQ that wasn't on the NES for the first time.

Where do I find the Mermaid Moon, is it in the next island I unlock?

I think it's a bit later in the game during the f
looded city quest line
.

a question to all my PAL-FRIENDS= how good is the translation? i havent played it yet, but nintendo/se took a lot of time to translate this game in a good way... so curious about that.

I wonder if the US version has the same translations as the UK

Yes, it does. All of the DQ translations after DQ8 besides DQ6 DS have been handled by British teams, either Plus Alpha or Shloc, which is the team who handled DQ7's English translation.

These mimics are a sick joke, no treasure and then sudden death to the characters with revive spells so I have to waste those precious Yggdrassil leaves.
