I hate consecutive bosses in RPGs.

Tinpot Dictator - Slaughtomaton
can go fuck right off

On my first try the last one killed 2 of my party members right before I killed him. Had to reset and try a few more times before I could kill him with everyone in tact. Was quite annoying.

I love that the "whistle" ability that instantly attracts a battle plays an actual whistle sound effect. The game is generally low on sound effects, so that made me smile.

Just picked this up. Now I need to decide if I want to put Xenoblade on the back burner to play this.

Anything I should know before jumping in?

Dying just makes you lose half your gold. There's no game over. So it's best to do a lot of shopping or put your money in a bank before going to a place where you may face a boss.

In DQ, you don't try to buy everything. If something just gives you a +2 improvement, don't pay $1,000 for it. Sounds obvious but there was someone earlier complaining that they had to grind to afford everything.

Party chat is important. After you talk to a NPC, you can find out what your party members have to say about what they heard. There's a lot of characterization contained just in those chats.

Story is better than Xenoblade.

Having a lot of fun so far. I just got the ability to change classes so I'm assuming things will open up even more from this point. This is my first time playing DQ7 (have played 1-6 and 9) and don't have any big complaints so far. I'm assuming there will be more casinos as I progress through the game? Just seems like the first one doesn't have too many items available.

Yep, Casinos galore. Don't know if you can create a casino in the immigrant town, supposedly, that was the biggest casino in a DQ game that you can visit.

There's 4 casinos, but 2 of those are on Alltrades. The Present Alltrades casino is technically different from the past one since the Lucky Panel rewards are slightly better. The last one is the final form of Haven, but it doesn't update to its final prize list until the final dungeon unlocks

Thanks for the replies, good to know.

Got the first two but I don't know where the hell is
my uncle
so I've been doing some fragment sidequests.
I think that's when said character is
hanging inside his house at that time?

Make sure you went to the little cave northeast of La Bravoure and talked to the guy/skeleton/party chat, then Zoom over to Estard and talk to people related the Bar/Pike's house, pretty sure one of those is the trigger.

There's a whole runaround related to this quest, so I'd really suggest looking at a walkthrough, the steps are more or less the same.

is there any tedium or frustration in this game?

I didn't realize it was a full remake

I enjoyed dq9 on 3ds

is there any difficulty ramps or overbearing time wasters?

is the text speed or battle speed slow?

Wow the conclusion to the herb town story is quite something. Totally did not expect that, all of that. I wonder what happened to
Dill and Cayenne when they left town.

Also managed to befriend a metal slime after 29 kills! A little over-leveled as a result.

Those magic vestments are a good in-vestment!

1) I think as long as you don't try to be completionist it's not tedious at all. Stay away from the casino and it's not frustrating.

2) Not really, the difficulty curve is pretty good overall. There are a couple points with shifts in your party layout that, depending on how you've built your team to that point, can be a little difficult.

3) You can change the speed of the text and overall I find it pretty quick. The battles also have a fairly quick pace, not the fastest in the series but certainly a lot faster than DQ9.

1 - I guess some people don't like revisiting towns in the present. I don't mind but you may

2 - I enjoyed dqix so much I played it in English and japanese for hundreds of hours each version

3- yes there are difficulty spikes but they are tamer than origin

4 - you can change battle text speed

How many of you make use of the Tactics settings? I haven't bothered with them, but I'm curious if there's any advantage to setting them any certain way. I just kinda prefer having full control of the battles....at least so far.

If it's anything similar to past games, using tactics can make it so that your AI party members can adapt to battles on-the-fly (like say someone gets seriously injured, then the AI party member can heal them right afterwards that same turn instead of you waiting for the next turn to select a healing spell to use on them).

Personally, I still prefer the manual settings (not to mention the AI can be a little wonky at times).

Game has been pretty amazing so far though. Is there a guide anywhere that shows the abilities you learn through monster classes?

This typo (HP instead of MP) and weak and strong 3D being reversed in battle are the only real mistakes I've noticed so far. This is an amazingly tight English translation.

Looooove the party chat, adds a lot of character.

Is there any kind of list to check out with ranks within each job? Like for example I just ranked up to Bishop within Priest and am not sure how much further I need to level up before I master it.

Game seems to have a difficulty increase at
sunken citadel
. Granted i haven't had the gold to buy new armour for awhile only new weapons. Will grind out some new armour and try again.

Just started, I just entered my first battle and grind all my characters up to 6, its strange how the weak 3d looks better than the strong in battle though.

There is a point where Party Chat has an incorrect gender pronoun as well. How many people notice it will probably be less than 1% of all players as it occurs
on the final Blue Pillar Island (Past). Ruff identifies a sad boy child in the Church as a "her", although the other party members use "correct" pronouns. Pedantic, I admit.

I'm sure there are more yet to be discovered, but as others have stated, shockingly few considering the sheer scope of the game's text.

I'm slowly creeping towards the end of the game. Run smack into some beloved (by me) traditional Dragon Quest tropes. The Hero (Big Spoilers. BIG.)
is almost always adopted and at least 1/4 (usually half) nonhuman. What other series did that a lot? Breath of Fire?

I have never played DQVII so I am having a lot of fun with this. There sure are a ton of battles but I'm loving the fast nature of combat, quick area transitioning and the 3D overworld. Game seems smooth. Story pacing is kind of slow but it really doesn't bother me.

Just wanted to show my love, I have been trying to avoid this thread in case of spoilers since this is my first run.

Could use some help, seem to have hit a wall. I'm in
present-day Frobisher. The little girl saws I'm supposed to find the robot part underneath the barrel by the stream, but the game won't let me destroy the barrel. What gives?

Edit: I actually fixed that problem, but now I've run into another one. I seem to be missing a map fragment for the next island, but I have no idea where to find it. I just finished the
part with Faraday Castle in the present day.

just finished the love story in the town with the herbs and stuff. Currently 13 or so hours in. How far away am I from Alltrade Abbey?

I almost always use "don't use magic" during dungeons and in the field, unless I'm grinding near a town, unless things start going bad.

I pretty much only control my full party during boss battles. I find it's actually pretty fun to see what actions the AI decides on.

Am I the only one experiencing framerate problems with this game?

Like come on, it's not like the graphics is good anyway.

There's a lot of hiccups in battle, usually when the UI is doing something like declaring an attack. I'd be really curious if that relates back to the previous UI issues mentioned in the Western release.

I've noticed some in the overworld but not nearly as frequently.

I just did those bosses last night and I couldn't believe how lucky/unlucky(depending on how you look at it) I got, so managed to do it first try without anyone dying.

Maribel went to 1hp one turn because he managed to attack before the heal came off. The Hero got pretty damn close due to the same reason as well.

Would have totally died if the fight had gone on any longer mind, was running out of MP by the end.

Apparently N3DS users with Luma and the L2 Cache + Clock speed boost on don't experience it. There's probably a higher concentration of us on GAF than the general population which is why there's not a lot of comments.

Got my first game over! Slaughtomatron came out of nowhere - I wasted all of Maribels MP on the boss right before and couldn't sap his high defenses.

Yes, it does. All of the DQ translations after DQ8 besides DQ6 DS have been handled by British teams, either Plus Alpha or Shloc, which is the team who handled DQ7's English translation.

because this is what a game is to me, if its translated in a good way.

thanks for the info!

I just finished the arc with the roamers. Man, I love this game. Definitely living up to the game that I remembered.

Visit the Grandfather of the guard. He's in the South East corner of the town with the barracks. Talk to the grandfather then talk to his daughter. You will get a fragment. If you got that one then you probably missed the one in the past in the same city. Should be relatively easy to find.

God those metal slimes.... I've forgotten how annoying they are!!

Haha, yeah, but the quillers are so cuuuuute in this game!

When I tried Sapping him it didn't even work. So not sure you even could?

I might be crazy, but I remember being able to.

I remember the framerate being a bit jarring in the first village, but I haven't really noticed as much since. Perhaps my brain/eyes adjusted.

I only tried it once and assumed it didn't work. So I guess it could have had a resist chance.

It might have been the failure flavor text that made you think that. A previous boss had said, "Blank was not affected," but then I tried again and it worked. I think it was when I put the volcano boss to sleep.

If the verbiage isn't exactly that it's something similar. I can see people thinking an enemy is immune because of that, but they typically aren't in DQ games.

That kind of Typo really infuriate me, i don't know why.

Same thing happen in Growlanser 3 where they inverts 2 Stat on party member selection.

Ah okay, that might have been it then.

Not really played much DQ prior to this so not really down with it's mechanics yet. :p
