Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

Yeah, I was really surprised what a dick this game is at that point.

I weirdly enjoyed it, though, because I was kinda running on autopilot up to this point.

But those two definitely gave me Shin Megami Tensei flashbacks! You should be able to do it without them, though, sometimes you just have bad luck with what moves they do.

Oh, and also - remember that you can DEFEND at any point, especially when a character gets critically low! I guess that's an option we barely use in RPGs anyone, but it saved my ass a couple of times.

Biggest issue is getting through the dungeon again. Since the corridors are too tight you end up fighting things every two steps. I just died halfway down.

Probably time to grind lol

I'm in Greenthumb Gardens. This part of the game is really slow but I like that there's more connective tissue with the past areas now.

About Faraday:
I expected Ellie to address the party and some bad stuff to go down.

I AM NOT WORTHY!

Did anyone order and receive their copies from Amazon? I ordered mine on the day it went up on the site, and it hasn't shipped yet. I'm told it will be 1-2 months until the order is fulfilled.

I did and got mine on release. Did you change anything with your order before it shipped? Sometimes that can delay a package being sent. Happened to me with ReCore.

So my party is dead and I haven't the gold on hand to revive them. I can't go back since once you get to the Abbey line there's no going back so I can't get any gold.

All I can do is face 3-4 enemy fights and pray I win by sheer luck to try and earn gold to revive everybody.

This is stupid lol

Nope, and amazon has actually been surprisingly terrible about it when I contacted support. Just canceled the order and am about to leave and pick it up from a gamestop around the corner :/

After 30 hours, I made it finally to Alltrades Abbey. I have no idea why I should switch vocations, though. No matter what vocation I choose, most stats would get significantly worse. This is my first Dragon Quest game, so maybe I'm missing something. I know it will benefit me long-term due to the skills I'll learn, but initially it seems like a bad deal. :/

They are way too minor to justify the cost of producing and distributing a patch.

In the English version. There are more in the German version for example and while they're overall still rare and minor, there is one that really should be fixed: Throughout the whole Roamer Encampment part, every single character (including NPCs) switches between "Lala" and "Lara" when referring to the dancer. I still don't know what's her correct name. That was quite annoying.

I shortly switched to English at that part btw, to see if they use a accent there (There is none in the German version, but I thought it would fit the nomad theme) and I noticed something different. After changing the language Kiefer still stayed Gismar, like in the German version (even other characters referred to him as Gismar). Seems like the language you start the game in, will determine the names of your party members permanently, lol.

Does the boss flee? lol

I was wondering the same thing, haha.

That sucks. I pre-ordered my game like the day it was listed and had zero issues. I think you just got handed some bad luck.

Amazon usually drops the ball on me, so I just pick up games at Best Buy with my GCU discount on release day.

I must be doing something wrong because these two can almost one-shot me.

It's getting a bit frustrating having to do this over and over and over. Why can't there be a teleport in the dungeon once you've already reached the end?

If you have no gold, why don't you just die and lose half your gold?

I've never been stuck there before, but my last 2 playthroughs I remember thinking, man, I barely got through this, it would suck to be under leveled......

So it seems like you've encountered my worst fears for that section.

I do die and since I have no gold I can't revive anyone. This means one person taking on 3-4 enemies at once and dying way too easily since it takes like 3 hits to kill one enemy.

I'm pretty much stuck and you can't leave the Abbey island either to access bank funds.

Paying money to revive teammates is definitely the one part I dislike most about DQ in general.

How much does it cost to revive a level 15 party member? Can't be that much. You probably have something you can sell to revive someone at least

(or just load your game har har)

If you're smart about using the bank that can actually be a really, really stupid move. You'd have more EXP, items, and gold EVEN AFTER RESURRECTIONS than you'd have had in that old save. It's definitely something people need to keep in mind (although funnily I can see this being a point where more younger players or those fresher to RPGs would be better at, given how often game overs are more a minor setback or something you just have to deal with like in Souls games rather than THE END.)

I need to know where's the next person for this. Following the description I thought it was in a certain place
the sphinx
but no one there seems to be the one. :(
It is where you think it is, just not WHO you think it is. Try running around the perimeter of that building. I'm not sure if that one has a story requirement or not, some of them do.

I've returned but he isn't there so I suppose I must advance in the story a bit more. Strange, because I already did two more areas after the last monster but well...

Wow, it does not take long to max out a vocation. I guess I'll get an advanced vocation before even visiting Alltrades in the present.

You have to finish
Nottagen
for that one and the next one.

Thanks, I think that's my next destination. I don't know because I'm not playing in English so I'm having trouble with the names here. :)

Looking at the fragment list it seems I did the last place out of order. Maybe that's why it seemed more difficult than usual.

This translation has been mostly free of the naming issues I've had with previous translations, but this one is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.
How a place is named after a particular event that will happen in the future or is currently happening, just for the sake of a cheeky pun.

I just completed the whole A
utomatron
island part everyone was talking about
it was so sad, and probably the first part of the game that is starting to feel challenging. I do feel bad for monsters in this game, they apparently go extinct in years time. :p

It will benefit you short term as well. Without a vocation you've got all round stats and just a few basic skills. When you take up a vocation you get specialized stats (who cares that a warrior has no MP when he hits harder) and start to learn skills right away. So if your mage loses strength but gains spellpower, MP and attack spells, it doesn't sound like a long-term thing anymore.

Neither the current name
which is shitty meme territory
, nor the former one
emo "looming" reference
really sit well with me. What's the Japanese name for the town? Does it also have that kind of reference or connotation?

Especially considering this is the town
you can deliberately not save
, it seems almost like it should
have two potential names, you know
?

The Japanese name is Lumen/Loomin/however you want to transliterate it.

The PS1 version actually took the direct name of the original in the majority of cases for the towns.

They're saving your team's butt from complete failure and you care about a few hundred coins that you'll ever pay maybe like once or twice. The priests and nuns need to eat!

For the record, the original name isn't what you think. The Japanese is
ルーメン (ruumen), which isn't really similar to how you'd write looming.

Is there a fragment location guide? I feel like I'm missing obvious signs of where the fragments are.

There's one in the game. Either talk to the dude at the shrine or go into the info section of the menu. They tell you right where to look.

I have spent about 15 years thinking poorly of whoever chose to romanticize it as
Loomin
because I don't just carry a grudge, I do a jig on top of the graves of my defeated enemies. That's good to know that it was probably (hopefully) never intended that way. Redirecting all ire to current localization. ;)

I'm honestly surprised at the amount of people I've seen who can't find Shards in the remake. The Fortune Teller in what is now the Faraday area (Present) was always a pain to walk to, but they built in a game function that gives you a list of all the Shards you can currently acquire. Not only that, I think they did a great job of keeping the hints clear enough that you can find them, but vague enough that you still have to put in some effort.

So, is there a consensus that the text speed & interface in the game are slower here than the JP release? I think the text speed is set as characters/time, and they didn't increase the rate to account for English text being more letters / screen, hence the slower text speed, which I believe was also the case in 9.

9 had an Action Replay code to speed up the text speed, and I'm interested in trying to figure out how to get one working here (in NTR-CFW or whatever other programs there are for Custom Firmware 3DSes). There is some possibility that it could speed up the rest of the interface as well?

Mastered the 10 basic human job classes without Maribel going from level 17 to 18.Now to take a break from that to play lucky panels in the present casino.

In my case, it's not that I couldn't find the shards. It's that I missed only two and had no idea where they were (
L'Arca, and Past Day Frobisher
).

There's also the radar on the bottom screen , that pulses more when you're "close" to a shard and pulses crazily when you're on the same level / screen , for narrowing things down once you've got the general location.

Hmmm...so how much of the goofiness in the English release is actually in the Japanese release?

I like how the translation presents monsters in particular, as these sort of continuum of mischievous to malevolent creatures that can only sort of communicate with humans. It is suggestive of different minds and motivation structures. Especially with the idea of monsters becoming human and humans becoming monsters, this is interesting and amusing. It juxtaposes well with the often religiously minded, i.e. a particular sort of severity and seriousness, struggle against them.

Are they amusing in the Japanese, or played more straight?

Just completed that town with the artist and the "groundhog day" timeline. But after that went across the bridge and back into the town with the herb garden and wasn't expecting that story-line to unfold!!!

I'm hearing that it's easier to master all the classes if you start at a lower lvl. I'm already level 10 before the first past island boss.. Am I already kind of screwed?
