Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

What are Ruff's Chomp and Roar Deal supposed to do? Chomp doesn't seem to do anymore damage than a regular attack, and Roar Deal hurts him more than the enemy. Sic' Em at least has an obvious use.

Will you ever be able to fast travel in the past world?

There´s many things about the game I appreciate, but getting around the world is definitely not one of them.

Like you said, I enjoy this kind of grinding. You are looking at the person who during their first play through of FFIX fought Griffins until I had 99 peridots, boosting Ramuh's damage to 4000/8000.

My silly goal is to have every character master every job. Not something that most people playing the game would do, but that is how I roll.

The nice thing about grinding is I can watch something on youtube/netflix/funimation/crunchyroll etc. while I grind.
I actually did that in both Dq3 and 6 Master every Job with every character, actually I always like my characters in rpgs being demi gods and the end of my play through

I just did Regenstein and it felt like it went by a little too fast, though maybe that's just my impressions being colored by the fact that I knew there were supposed to be more flashbacks than that. I'm curious to see how it went by in the original so I'll probably watch it on youtube later.

As much as I've been enjoying DQ VII I think I'm gonna put it on the backburner for a while. Focusing on two jrpgs is tough when you don't have a lot of free time and Apocalypse opens up its gameplay mechanics a lot faster so I'm more focused on that right now.

Even in the original it is a short one. The Island is really small so it fits as well. What you miss out on is a few story threads that flesh up the town a bit more, that's it. I really am not sure why they reduced the number of flashbacks.

Man, why do they always pick the comedy accents for the sad parts of these games? Their idea of German is starting a dialogue box with a phrase book greeting in German followed immediately the same phrase in English, and then making everybody talk like they've been kicked in a horse, replacing and with und, replacing "c"s with "k"s, and ending the dialogue box with either "ja" or "bitte." Nothing has been learned. Really makes the town with the statues hard to enjoy.

Man I can't believe I'm finally playing this game. Been waiting over 3 years for this game and it's finally here. Wanted to get it day 1 but funds didn't work out so I had to wit a week but I finally got it. And it is every bit as amazing as I thought.

Played for about 6 hours so far and am on the 2nd island. Judging from the amount of islands I see in the temple I can already see why people say this game is so massive. Can't wait.

Gotta love the attention to detail in this game. I was going to stop playing when I got to the Tallest Tower, so I went over to the hero's house and save when I discovered that the NPC that joins you for this (B
ulgio
even has party talk text for this occasion.

Grrrr. I just finished
Providence
and I don't have enough tablets to progress to the next area, and the guy at the mystery shrine is no help.

There is a fragment at
Maximo's Mansion
but I can't find it. Anybody have any idea what I might be missing here?

I'm an idiot. I hadn't gone back to the
sunken shrine
.

You spoilered but his name is still in the screen cap lol

Are the Thief's Key and Magic Key in this not all that useful? I don't remember having so few chests or doors to open in other games when you get your hands on them.

Hahaha,
Chyanne's
and
Dill's
dialogue in
Greentumb Garden
had me dying. So far, this is a better arc than the last one,

so I got to Robot Island and saw what happened after you visit the present.
I felt the PS1 version was more sad than this version, you saw Autonycus's full skeleton late on the bed and Ellie doing her daily duties, compared to just Autonycus's skull on the bed. I literally cried in the PS1 version, but this version, just abit sad, but didn't affect me as much.

Other than that, I'm enjoying the game alot, still wish there was random encounters or have that option at least

Finally got Mervyn in my party.

Now to deliberate what vocations to put him in...

(I suspect that I'll probably just go for the typical route that I'm planning for Ruff:

Gladiator, Paladin, miscellaneous monster classes -> Champion)

Mastered the 10 basic human job classes without Maribel going from level 17 to 18.
Woo! A fellow grinder! Spent around 5 hours post-Abbey getting Hero/Ruff/Maribel all the basic jobs and a pair of intermediates before we sadly started hitting L20! Those slime hearts sell for 200 each and I'd gotten way more than 100 of them @_@ totally bankrolled my latest gear upgrades! Not even sure I need new weapons for awhile to come. Wind Sickles/Thin Air/Lightning/etc. x3 kinda speak for themselves lol.

Grinding is a great way to completely zone out on the couch with a good podcast. It´s a very weird way to relax, but it´s my version of adult coloring books.

The game really seems to encourage grinding, with the whistle ability that instantly triggers a battle, the one-hand-able controls and the solid tactics options.

Not quite as automatizable as Bravely Second, but coming close!

Yeah, I love just zoning out and grinding, and DQ VII makes it particularly nice with fairly frequent class level ups that give you more than just a couple of attribute points too.

Debating whether to start playing this; how quickly does the game take to get going into the "real game"?

I personally would advise to see this as a game that you can play in segments rather than a "play through it as quickly as possible before I start the next game" title. The battle-less intro section takes maybe two hours or so, but that dwarfs in comparion to how long the game overall is.

I think this game is great for picking it up for a couple of hours, take a break for a while and then come back later.

The game gives a ton of "the story until now" and party chat options so you will always know where to go next.

I rushed through it to get until Alltrades Abbey to unlock the class system and actually kinda regret it, because I didn´t really let myself soak in all the dialogue. It´s a game you can easily burn out on if you binge too hard (at least that´s my experience), but with frequent breaks it should last you a long time.

I think looking at this game as a more long-term companion to supplement your game library works way better than a "gotta finish this" title. The game progressively opens up more and more, making it a very satisfying journey.

Quick question, I'm at
the dig site in the present after the Roamers section. There is a map fragment around here other than the one in the well, but the guy won't let me by. Am I not supposed to get this one yet?

Seriously. The amount of busy work and needless walking around just to trigger the next conversation is what really makes this feel dated to me.

Ya I can see it as being encouraged for sure especially in this game when ya go for so long with only a few basic abilities. Getting Safe Passage only after you've been forced ta run across damaging terrain a few times was so cruel that ya basically wanna get it right away regardless of the time it takes to get!

No you'll get it later. Also remember where that island is and that ya can only get to it by ship, not Zoom. It'll save ya many minutes of zooming an running all around places ya think its at but isn't -_-

I haven't gotten to the job class section yet, but I had to revisit a previous location, and noticed some enemies were running away from me as I approached. Is that an indication of an enemy not counting towards leveling your job class or are they doing something like Earthbound?

Now I know why people grind jobs. I had to leave a dungeon in the past to return to the abbey to not waste battles in a mastered job. The worst thing is that Ruff masters his class in 20 battles and I'm seeing myself doing it again.

A little bit of both. Enemies that run are generally considered trivial encounters, so they run. Triggering the battle anyway won't net you any battle credit for Vocations, but you can still gain EXP, Gold, Treasure (if applicable), Monster Hearts (if applicable), and Recruitment popups. Note that unlike in Earthbound, you will have to fight the encounters.

There are a few notable exceptions. "Metal" types of monsters will always run in the overworld or dungeon map, so it is best to approach them from the back or use Whistle to initiate a random battle if you want to fight them. They will always attempt to run or flee even if they appear in an area that doesn't have a level cap for Vocations.

Awesome, thanks for the info. Can't wait to unlock vocations, was my favorite part when playing on Playstation.

I turned Ruff aka Gabo into a Luminary. I highly recommend doing this.

Thanks, yeah I noticed that when I went to zoom out, kind of irritating since it's the only island I've run into that's like that!

Casino Log 6:

Working on collecting basic monster heart classes. Of to a decent start, though seeing a heart only to lose the game can be disheartening.

Slime IIIII
Berserker II
Rockbomb I
Jawtoise II
Mimic II
Chimaera I

Total Hearts needed: 30
Hearts Collected: 13
Hearts Remaining: 17

Of course the slime hearts came from grinding.

So I just got the migrant/monster town open and went to get the first guy.

I get how tablets work, but when they say they need more monsters for the town, are they talking about me finding more NPCs, or using the monster munchies (also, is that a random chance they get used or what)?

They're talking about you finding more NPC's. Talk to the guy you got to go to the town and he'll give you a clue as to where the next person is.

You don't have to use the munchies, you just need them in your inventory.

I still haven't had a single monster stick around after a battle. Granted, I've only been playing for ~two hours after getting the munchies but I'm still disappointed!

It can be quite rare. The Monster Masher class has a skill that increases the chance of it happening.

I failed so many times a puzzle in a dungeon that I unintentionally grinded and mastered a vocation. Thanks???

This paladin wind skill is busted, the random battles "fly away".
