Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

Best DQ? Yes
Best Remake? Not sure. It's mostly better. However a few changes are for the worse. DQIV is probably the better remake. DQIII SNES too. But again, this remake is very good

DQV DS is the best remake by virtue of adding a new wife/kids. I am not a fan of the new chapter in DQIV to be honest

DQIII on GBC is also a strong contender for best remake

I have to agree some changes in DQVII 3DS are for the worse, and they missed the chance to fix some of the DQ7 problems by not adding a character to fill the party most of the time (or let you recruit monsters), or putting Dharma earlier or other stuff

the shard detector is really nice however, as is the 'next fragment hint' sub menu, but they should have let you walk to each plint to put the shards by hand. the old dungeon without the weird fairy thingie was much more haunting (altho I don't miss the old puzzles in there)

Maturity, bitches.
Well DQVII 3DS exists in the PAL region while the original doesn't so for me it's automatically better.

Honestly Debra doesn't really add much either(Hell, odds are you aren't even going to pick her.) I'd take the PS2 version of DQ5 over the DS version.

Also the DS version uses the same tired NPC sprites as the other remakes/DQVII, and doesn't have the sweet orchestral score of the PS2. Those are big minuses. On the plus though I prefer the menu in the DS remake, and also it bugs me that the hero never walked with his staff in the PS2 remake like he does in SFC/DS.

Yeah, that really isn't a reason to make DQV the best remake . Unless you are playing it as a waifu simulator, but that would be a shame since DQV is much more than that.

I always found the other wives very boring so Debora made the game a lot better

I'm just really glad to have all of the remakes, they're all stellar in their own ways. I think that the removal of random battles (outside of the ocean) is a huge feather in VII's cap, though.

So I'm in the town with the first casino. Anyone has some tips for me? No luck at the slot machine and pairs isn't my style. Had some luck with my first win at Poker and the double or nothing. But only the first time. Now I always have to find the cards which is higher than a Queen or King.

Been stuck at Alltrades Abbey, this arc is rough if you're under leveled and with decent to bad equipment. Doing the
arena fights now, keep getting some bad rng from the kung fu guy.

Bianca is better then flora but the vane guilt trips you hard into marrying her, so I wantto rebel. It's nice having an alternative

Bianca gives you super saiyan Gohan as a kid, so there's really no other choice.

Deborah is non canon as far as I'm concerned.

I don't even like random encounters, but I'm not liking the change to visible enemies here. I feel like I'm having to fight a lot more here since enemies pop everywhere which you can't avoid, especially in narrow corridors where they chase after you. I could be remembering it wrongly, but I don't think the encounter rate in the original worked out to that high.

How do you get the FC, sir? I have it but can't use it in the overworld. I'm pretty much at the exact same bit you are :(

incase you still stuck here iirc it's fake. There is a scenario where you speak to the maid and she tells you she has hidden the real one and requests you provide something I think was called the Mermaid's moon but you get that much later on in the game.

If you let them chase you and you're running in a straight line, you can usually make them despawn, but I always just fight them since I want the job class levels anyway.

There are random battles at sea and on those geometry puzzle things. Was kind of sad we didn't get to see monsters trying to run across the latter.

Does anyone know if you can buy magic water anywhere? I'm right on the end boss and just failed due to running out.

I've used up all the bottles I found, so it's either lose the XP and reload a save, or go on having wasted about six bottles of it.

Game breaking. I'm considering ditching my plans and staying mm. Then retooling everyone into that

I am not at the end so I don't remember it being sold, but I vaguely remember the past casino having it as a token prize.

Encounters were pretty damn frequent in the original. I notice a pretty good mix of encounters that happen quickly one after another, and then rather long stretches where nothing spawns. Getting in and out of combat's so fast though, so it doesn't bother me.

I've heard someone(s) at Nintendo doesn't like it. Not sure how true it is, though!
I linked to it earlier, they think it comes off as "childish."

If they still did surveys I'd complain each time. Doubt it makes a lick of difference in sales and just annoys the more nitpicky fans like me.

EDIT: Also, thanks to the people who gave me the party member answers! Just made sure they didn't carry any items, equipment is redundant for now.

With Shephard you learn Counting Sheep that sends all enemies to sleep with what seems to be a 90% success rate. It's a really useful move.

Yeah, that move is great. (And maybe a bit op) Used it on the thieves at the ruins near alltrades in present day. Probably wouldn't have won without it.

Thats a guide for the ps1 version. Are there no differences aparts from the names of some of the classes?

Don't use it. They've reshuffled the class system entirely

People weren't joking about the difficulty spikes at All Trades Abbey. I wiped at Rasher and Stripes, and when I made my way back I didn't heal, thinking I'd get healed up again by Jacqeline, but nope, wiped out even quicker. Thankfully I actually remembered to quick save prior to the encounter the second time and did eventually off them, third time lucky (although I think hit lucky with them attacking Eustace a lot more often). I'm so looking forward to unlocking the class system. I genuinely find the whole experience of unlocking areas in the current timeline very rewarding.

Working my way through Greenthumb Gardens at the moment. Couldn't stop rolling my eyes. Such drama! Will she? Won't she? Will he?!? It's almost too much!

I died at the very first fight in that area. I rolled in at level 13 or so (and Ruff is at like level 7). I've barely skated out of a few of the earlier dungeons hauling a couple of coffins, but that's how it goes when you don't grind at all. Just the right difficulty. Alltrades seems to be a spike, but then again, it's not too hard to get some better equipment from the Casino.

That said, I restored my save and did some Casino save-scumming for some much-needed upgrades. Working on extra coins now.

I'll try it again in a day or two after I get some more fat Casino gear.

I don't have a great memory but it's funny how little of this game I remember. I played it on PS2 right when it came out. I remember the Casino in the well, and the intro, the bit of bad CGI for the Roamers/underwater temple scene and not a lot else.

That and getting stuck at the endboss.

How do I get back to
Pilgrim's Perdition
in present time? I need the fragment. Apparently there is a cave near
Alltrades
that takes you there, but I don't see it?

Edit: I'm an idiot.. Had to look in the past.

What is the best way to class grind? I'm in the final stretch and want to finish the game with some of the advanced classes.

My roommate is stuck on Envoy. Any advise for him?

I heard something about Ripple Rapier.
Envoy is RNG hell if you're unprepared. But if you have armor that reduces magic that helps a lot as his spells don't hit as hard. I'm not sure if it's possible to have bounce at that point. But if not then it's just best to hope he doesn't spam kasnooze/kaswoosh and just hit him hard with high damage skills like knuckle sandwich.

Just finished this, with a final time of 56 hours for the main story. I haven't really touched the monster meadows, traveller tablets and post game dungeons yet though.

To be honest I'm not sure if I will- the story was rounded off so nicely in the end sequence/credits, with a couple of nods to plot points I wasn't sure would get another mention (specifically,
a final mention of Kiefer and showing Sharkeye reunited with his wife)
that I'm happy to put it down for now. What an amazing game, really strong writing throughout. I can remember so many of the scenarios and their key players when other RPGs have had me forget about them almost as soon as I've reached the next chapter. Having you continually welcomed back as legendary heroes in
the desert
was really nice, and refreshing rather than ego-stroking considering that another town has you briefly recast as the villains of the piece!

Final boss was tough, but it required me to dig deeper into my skill and spell lists (as well as finally equip the rarer consumables like Yggdrasil Dew and Prayer Rings.) so it felt like a suitably epic battle. Better than having a walkover.

One point on the final dungeon, that I noticed only due to failing on the final boss the first time around and then reviving rather than reloading.
Which amulet you use at a certain point seems to dictate which section and treasure you will find next - I used the water amulet first time through and found a tablet piece, but used the earth amulet next and that gave me a powerful set of Gaia armour. Maybe the tablet piece appears regardless? No idea!

Anyway, I really enjoyed it, easily one of the best JRPGs I've played, and on the system. Thanks to everyone who answered my questions during my run :)

It's only in the water one. Each route also contains a piece of legendary equipment. The water route has the strongest sword in the game as well but you must have missed it.

Ah, I wondered about that, that explains a lot! I saw a
circular light patch and a door after coming down some steps on the water route. Stepped into the light thinking it was a 'heal all party members' spot with the door being the way forward, but to my horror it took me to the final boss rather than grabbing that treasure!
