Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

Graphics?

I actually feel DQ VII 3DS is one of the nicest-looking games on the system. I was impressed by how much detail there was, for example, in the battle backgrounds, and the whole game is 3D enabled. Only major flaw I saw was the constant tree pop-in in the overworld.

DQ 8 3DS is visually inferior to 7 3DS though, and on top of that it's not 3D-enabled everywhere. I hope that doesn't affect it :(

I don't think the Western fanbase is entirely to blame for not buying the games. Square Enix is also not doing their part in convincing more people to buy them.

Bummer that this didn't do so hot sales-wise, it was my first DQ and I enjoyed it

I just went and pre-ordered DQ8 on Amazon to show support; a no-brainer now that Persona 5 is delayed

Dragon Quest would probably sell better if they spent any time or money marketing it.

IX sold pretty well right? shame VII could not muster up even a blip on the sale chart.

Been playing DQ II on android, this would be a fantastic game to remake

Nearly 1.5 million outside of Japan I think? Which isn't so bad.

Was going to play DQ 4, 5 and 6 after I beat this 7, but I'm still waiting for a copy I ordered of 4 to show up so now I am sans DQ to play. Is the post game stuff in 7 worth playing?

I tried this and the resultant offspring only likes Rocket Slime out of every Dragon Quest game or spinoff that I own. Overall, this experiment was a wash.

On the other hand, the Pokémon indoctrination went swimmingly.
Keep up the good work :).

If we can learn success rates we can perhaps discover how many children we all need to produce.

So there's a whole new batch of tablets out right now that aren't all up on the main website.

Reward list:

Sphere of Silence (Accessory, casts silence on enemy(ies?))
Windbraker (Accessory, higher style than Air Amulet and passive dodge effect)
Gripevine Heart
Slime Shield
Mask of Implacability (Cursed, super high defense)
Mink Mantle (Armor, no effects, mid-game defense)

There's also a new permanent story-based one which seems to give you a prayer ring (?) but nothing else, and there are no battles or anything. Kind of disappointed.

I'm still plugging away at the game, getting a few hours in here and there.

I keep forgetting that this tablet business even exists.

Scorch is ridiculous, my character's normal attacks hit for like 50 and suddenly I get a skill that does 130 to all enemies for no cost.. The game was already too easy without it

The class system in this game is distinctly sub optimal in a lot of way (not even counting the deliberate retro stuff like not knowing how far from the next level / class level you are).

There are a lot of pointless skills in this game that are either identical to or inferior to other skills that have the same or less MP cost made worse by poor descriptions not conveying which skills are better (or even often what a skill does).

A lot of skill access is incredibly badly organised too (lots of Tier 1 monsters are just hugely inefficient paths to skills you could get much quicker through normal classes and you get more than double the amount of skills from Human classes anyway).

On a separate more story related note: I just finished up the Desert Dweller scenario (I've been trying to finish up DLC Tablets but I've hit a wall where the tablet bosses are way more than I can handle with my current party), how many hours are left before I hit Sir Melyvn if I just rush through (while watching the story of course and grabbing anything missable) ? I'm vastly overlevelled from the Metal Scorpion tablet (31 / 32/ 29) and severely overskilled (everyone has Monster Masher (+ Thief + Sheperd),. Hero has all Tier 1 human classes + Pirate , Maribel has all Tier 1 human classes + Drake Slime, Ruff has Slime, Kingfuschia, Heal Slime, Drake Slime and Delusionist) so rushing through shouldn't be difficult.

Think there's a chance NOA will make all the DLC available again later? It'd be a shame to miss out on a lot of it just because a person isn't at a really high level yet (seriously, the levels required for most tablets have been ridiculously unbalanced since launch day). Anyone know how release of DLC was handled in Japan?

It's Square Enix that makes the tablets available, not Nintendo. IIRC, the tablets were cycled out in Japan but I could be wrong.

Ah ok, well I don't like how they are handling the DLC at all. Oh well, in any case I think I'm more interested in getting to where I can create and share tablets with other users.

Agreed. I missed quite a few weeks worth of tablets and wish they could just make them available indefinitely instead.

Yeah, having such a short capacity for tablets is utterly ridiculous.

I've been leveling my crew in the Treasure Hunter tablet on metal mannequins, and I've finally gotten the levels/jobs to pass their defense threshold (~510+ ATK I believe) where I can attack normally and kill them, so it's smooth sailing to 99 now using Mercurial Thrust and Harvest Moon. Not sure where I should go after this for job levels, probably one of those tablets with the moles that drop strength seeds, or hunting for hearts.

I guess there are also rare drops from certain tablet bosses that you can create, but unsure if anything is worth farming for at this point.

Just hit my first wall with cumulus vex. He's annihilating me. Maribel is my only character that had oomph and multiheal and
with her gone for the moment
it's making this fight impossible for me at level 23-25. I've gone 40+ hours without having to do any grinding but it looks like I might not have a choice now.

Man I'm in the exact same situation right and is frustrating the hell out of me. Takin away Maribel kind of destroyed my party, cant even use full heal right now. It's just so stupid that I didn't die once to any boss before and now I'm at an impossible fight. Worst of all, it takes like a full 5 minutes to do the runback. Anyway time to grind some classes.

I did finally manage to beat him. Had Mervyn do foreberance every turn so he would absorb the entirety of his ridiculous attack and kept zinging him back to life right afterwards.

I haven't had time to play the Pokemon demo, let alone the full game due to my slow progress with this game.

Just completed the game. I'm so glad for the "Summon," ability. Gabo summoned a super useful Summon that did serious damage throughout the whole battle. Honestly not sure if I would have won without it.

I love how intense boss battles can be in Dragon Quest

Finally beat the game this morning (75h). Loved every second of it, although I might have been overlevelled arouind mid game.

Are the two post game dungeon worth the time?

Anyone able to recommend one of the latest tablet releases for a mid-twenties level party? For some reason I only see the old wave of tablets on the site.

I haven't touched tablets at all yet, aside from the initial Slime one. After losing Maribel I need to build up someone else a little to fill her role, as the difficulty majorly spiked. Thought this would be a good time to explore tablets.

The recommended levels are close to complete garbage though. I'm in my 30s but can only do up to ~23ish and not even all of those (the Laguar boss completely owns my face for example). It's far more about Classes / Skills / Equipment / and having a party of 4 than level.

Funny you should mention the Laguar, since I finished that tablet just last night.

The mobs that spawn in the tablet are easy-peasy, but, as you said, the Laguar was a nasty surprise. Especially due to its ridiculous agility, HP count, and resilience. Thankfully, it's weak to Tongue Bashing, which made all the difference.

EDIT: Level 35 is nowhere near enough for this week's Infernal Kernals tablet, though. Stupid things average about 500 HP and the Infernal Kernal itself is going to Kathwack you at the start of the fight.

I'll give tongue bashing a try next time I'm at the Haven. I only had 1 party member with it at the time (and it was my primary Zinger who was otherwise occupied). I have two now, so that might work.

This game reminds me how much I hate the casinos in this series. The only game I can consistently win at is Lucky Panel, but once sold the prizes still aren't worth enough gold to buy a decent amount of tokens. The others feel like real-life gambling where the odds are totally stacked against you.

Poker is impossible due to double or nothing being left completely up to chance

The slot machines are just a massive time-sink with incredibly low odds - in about 2 hours I've only ever got three sevens once, and that was in one of the 1 token machines.

I guess you have bad luck then. Slot machines are the only way to go in most DQs except 8, where roulette is preferred.

I don't know if it's the case in the remake, but I've played the PS1 version on an emulator and there the double or nothing wasn't random. The game occasionally decides you must lose no matter what you pick, and sometimes you must win no matter what you pick. In other words, the game cheats.

7 3DS seems to have the most inefficient slot machine from my experience so getting coins in it is probably a bigger pain in the ass than almost every other game in the series.

8 3DS was like the exact opposite. Gathered over a million in like an hour

After the consecutive, unwinnable battles at
Alltrades Abbey
, I thought the game was done with that nonsense.

Cue
Hybris
, who was actually giving me a refreshing challenge, until I realized something was wrong after he soaked up some 6000 HP worth of damage. Oh well, at least his weakened state takes more punishment than the other bosses up to that point.

There's a tough boss coming up in the tablet after that one, depending on what classes you happen to have at the time

Current batch of DLC tablet rewards:

Premium Pot Lid (higher stats, added resists)
Encyclopaedia Titanica (Shield skinned like a book)
Walking Corpse heart
Raving Mad Cap (mad cap with slightly higher def/style)
Night Light (Great(er?) Leveller battle item)
Pallium Regale (BIS armor for Gabo/Ruff maybe?)

Definitely not bad on rewards, I was able to upgrade my Ruff's flowing robes with the Pallium Regale. The boss fight for that one is a little tricky, the boss has a built-in Bounce and he can self-cast Oomph to do 400+ single target damage or 200+ party damage. He also has Helm Splitter and hits multiple times per turn. Bring Omniheal or come prepared with beefy physical damage and Kabuff.
