Only played the game for a little over an hour but it gave me a nice and warm fuzzy feeling. I love this 3d take on the old turn based system. I was confused at first but the 3d at least in the very beginning isnt too big of a deal

I'm not sure what you mean by 3rd take? Dragon quest games have been using the same combat since dragon quest 1, even before final fantasy. The only real video game rpgs before it were wizardry and ultima. Dragon quest 5 also influenced Pokemon, since DQ5 was the 1st rpg to have monsters fight with you on a party.

Ok I am like 25 hours in and I really struggle with the next? Boss?

How the hell do I beat this Elysium Bird? These three are absolute destroying me right now. Or is this even the way to go right now after Nautica?

I was aware of that prior to your statement considering this isn't my first dragonquest and that I have played others in the past(never finished a single game though)

Any advice on choosing greatsword or sword and board?

for hero it doesn't matter, you can use great swords, or a sword and shield, they are both good, you can change your skills whenever you want at the church, if you change your mind. If the game is easy for you, next time try playing with all the difficulty settings on.

It really opens up there. I went to Phonh something or other after Nautica, challenge definitely amps up a little it seems.

I’ve been pining for an old school FF since 9. This looks like it may scratch that itch. What do you reckon, guys? I haven’t played a JRPG in yonks.

Are you playing on draconian quest? I'm playing on normal and Elysium Bird didn't give that much trouble.

To me its not about being old school or not, DQXI is just pretty damn JRPG and if you like playing JRPGs then this is a must buy.

To me as somewhat of a layman in the genre, the term JRPG seems so broad that I don't know if I can say whether I like JRPGs or not. I liked PS1 era Final Fantasy but haven't been interested in the series since the disappointment of 12. I'm also a lot older now so am generally turned off by childish anime tropes.

dragon quest 11 is good for new comers, it doesn't have random battles like the older dragon quest games. You also don't have to level grind as much, and you can change the difficulty settings. Though if you like dragon quest 11, you should play 8 on 3ds or ps2

Yeah I play with Stronger enemies. Meanwhile I have beaten this bird thanks to Jade and Multitrust.^^

Someone else said this before, DQXI is most Nintendo like game for a non Nintendo series.

I'm definitely gonna try Stronger enemies in my second playthrough.

Question, should I be keeping old gear/basic equipment I find? In the old games with the alchemy keeping stuff around was useful because it could be used for new equipment but I'm wondering if it works the same way with forging.

you should always keep items you find, cause you never know what items you can make latter on. If you can buy a weapon or armor at a store, you can just sell it, cause you can just buy it again later on.

Is there a point where positioning in battle actually matters? I know I am still early in the game but 3d movement seems like a novelty at the moment.

Free Roam Camera makes it a little more like Dragon Quest X but it's mostly for show and positioning doesn't really matter. Fixed Camera is the classic DQ experience. I'd recommend that one instead.

For sure...post game is massive! I watched the true ending yesterday and it’s sealed the deal for being my favourite jrpg of all time.

Just got to get some costumes for the Plat trophy, then I may continue to finish the last few quests just because I don’t want it to end!

Glad to see someone else feeling as I am about the game - I'm not quite ready to say it's my favorite of all time, but it is definitely up there! Like top 5 (maybe 3). I really hope we continue to get JRPGS of this caliber!

So I've always been a fan of the DQ games... but have never gotten around to playing one.

I own them all for various systems from NES to PS4... but this one looks so good I'm tempted to make it my first... will I be disappointed starting with this one? Should I be patient and start playing some of the older ones first?

Well we have bunch of different JRPGs out there, I mean you cant really compare games like KH to DQ games. But I can say is DQXI by far the most god damn polished JRPG I ever played, I mean I love Xenoblade Chronicles 2 but that game has lot rough spots but DQXI in other hand is polished as fuck and everything works so well together and only negative I can think of is the music is not that great compare to everything else.

You can jump in with this one, but definitely go back and play the other ones too - for the most part, they are all excellent - I especially loved DQ8 the most prior to this one, but they are all very much so worth playing.

I mean, a lot of the other dragon quest games are good. Its just a shame its like up to number 11 to make it more main stream.

DQVIII was my favourite JRPG until this, so it’s been knocked into the number 2 spot now lol.

I think I'm finally approaching the end of the first half. My in game clock is at 43 hours! I've spent maaaaaaybe 2-3 of that not actually playing, but 40 hours still sounds like a lot for this point of the game, which for reference:

Just got the last orb from Sniflheim, about to make my way to Yggdrasil for the first time.

Just really loving it. Jade with multi-thrust is such a beast. I have 2 falcon blade +3s but I think she's still stronger lol.

So when all this happens that is the half way point? I played already 45 hours and Valkyira comes out soon too....

I think the second half typically plays faster than the first half because you've been through all of the areas and what not before so you probably spend less time exploring and wandering around? I'm not sure. Most people seem to go faster on the back half.

Got the Plat, and it’s one of my most worthwhile plats to date. 😊

I love the fact that getting that shiny trophy requires you to see and do almost everything the game has to offer.

What a ride!!

Yep music is unfortunately a weak spot, especially in comparison to XC2 which has unique day/night tracks for each zone. I keep thinking I'll hear a night time track when outside of town. Mitsuda is a beast.

I'm also playing XC2 Torna DLC and music is pretty damn good.

Well, I'm at the boss in Phnom Nonh on harder difficulty and think I ran into the first instance where I may need to grind out some levels. My guys are 27-29 at the moment and this boss is absolutely wrecking me - the fact that it gets 3 turns is brutal. Knew it would happen sooner or later, I suppose I could be going to the wrong spot - The green orb was the last thing I did before this and it opens up a fair bit after that. Loving the challenge though.

Cheers! I would say around the 100-110 hour mark. I can’t say exactly because I left the game on overnight a couple of times with my controller on autofire at the casino to gather tokens.

Yeah seems like it. At first I also explored a bit but it seems that most of the stuff is not new even the pots are not refilled. So I guess I will just do all these new Side quests and beat the game in a much faster pace now.

I thought the Bird was much more difficult. For the one in Nonh Multi-thrust again really helped a lot also this anti status effect spell from Serena. I was never keen on Jade and her Spear at first but now I will not fight without her anymore. This ability is just too good.

I just unlocked that attack for her and yeah no kidding that Multi-thrust is crazy powerful. It's like Yoshitsume's Hassou Tobi attack in SMT/Persona.

Well I just went up to the Bird boss and destroyed it first time up, we must have different playstyles. I try to sustain, with Hymm of Fire and Def/Mag Def buffs from Serena / Veronica the spells didn't do much to me, Rab's heal over time was enough when they used a turn to cast. The physical damage could go pretty bad though before I got the extra birds down.

I may have to respec Jade and give that a shot if I can't crack it (put points in claws), I haven't been using her at all either. My party has been pretty much Serena, Veronica, Hero and Rab since I got them all. Thanks for the tip.

To be fair after I got Multi-Trust the Bird was easy too. If you are lucky depends how the Multi Thrusts hits you can kill one of these birds in your first attack. As for your party. There is a lot of healing going on so maybe your playstyle is a bit more defensive then mine.

Also if you can SAP and use Omph with Sylvando she does incredible damage.

I didn't get a chance to play on the weekend but made up for it with a solid session right now. Beat the spider boss without losing somehow but it took me 20 minutes and a lot of swapping members in and out. Things got hairy but managed to pull through. What a stupid boss fight.

I just hate how some bosses/enemies can attack like 4 times in a row even with accelerated characters.

Yeah I had my characters buffed and him debuffed, it didn't do much. Plus he has two attacks that can incapacitate party members that he can fire off consecutively. It was a really annoying fight. I got even more annoyed when 15 minutes into the thing Tab decided to finally use his defuddle spell. I yelled at my screen DUDE YOU'VE HAD THIS THE WHOLE TIME AND HAVEN'T USED IT ONCE WHAT THE HELL haha.
